Welcome to the 26th Annual Business Excellence Awards. Since 1991, the Business Excellence Awards has become the premier business event of the year, recog-nizing the achievements and con-tributions of business leaders in Windsor and Essex County.

ebrates the potential of all women as valued members and leaders of the community and recognizes their sup-porters. It honours individuals who strive toward the highest levels of pro-fessional accomplishment. Individu-als, who excel in their chosen field, have devoted time and energy to their com-munity in a meaningful way, and who open paths so that others may follow.

BELIEVE WINDSOR ESSEX AWARDThe Believe Windsor Essex Award

recognizes an individual or business that has demonstrated a significant and sustained commitment to posi-tive business development, econom-ic growth and diversity within our region. It is chosen by the Business Excellence Awards Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEARAn owner or founder who formed at

least one venture, primarily respon-sible for the recent (last two years) performance of a privately held busi-ness that is at least three years old, who has made an outstanding con-

tribution to their local economy, and the entrepreneurial spirit. Nominees will demonstrate company growth including sales, profitability, growth prospects, risk taking, employment creation and acceptance in the mar-ket. They also show commitment to R&D and development of technologi-cal advances in its industry sector.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AWARDRecognizes an Essex County busi-

ness that has enthusiastically and successfully embraced the global marketplace (including the U.S.) through physical expansion, world-wide sales and/or multi-national alliances. All sized businesses, domestic or foreign-owned, will be considered. Nominees will be selected based on these performance criteria over the last 3-5 years: Direct employment retained and created, Facilities created, Increased sales, and Leadership in the global arena.

PILLARS OF OUR COMMUNITY AWARDThis award recognizes a regis-

tered not-for-profit organization, philanthropic organization, or per-son that has made an outstanding

contribution to the social, cultural or economic well-being of the Greater Windsor-Essex Area. This nominee positively impacted the community, and demonstrated best business practices. The business mission/objective/goals of the organization reflect a community need which has a clearly defined strategic plan.

PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEARAn individual professional, who

is self-employed or employed in a company or organization. The per-son has demonstrated excellence in his or her field of business in the recent past, and has demonstrated leadership and positively impacted the community. Examples include CEOs, lawyers, accountants, doctors, bankers, consultants, etc. Non-prof-it leaders are eligible for this award.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEARRecognizes a standout young

professional/entrepreneur who is ‘on the rise’. Nominees, 30 years of age and under, will demonstrate a proven commitment to our commu-nity through outstanding scholar-ship and achievements and exem-plary leadership and community

involvement. The recipient must demonstrate innovative thinking, exemplary leadership qualities, commitment to making a difference, ability to engage and inspire others, and act as a positive role model to his/her peers and colleagues. The recipient will also demonstrate sig-nificant growth potential as a future leader in Windsor-Essex.

Nominees will demonstrate strate-gic goals and how they accomplished them. NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEARA new business or an owner /

manager of a business venture that is at least one year old but less than

TOURISM & HOSPITALITY AWARDRecognizes a business that has

demonstrated excellence in the areas of hospitality and tourism, and has played a vital role in the growth of their sector. The business should demonstrate the critical suc-cess factors that have played a role in their success including employee relations, economic development/investment, business growth, and contributions to the community. This local business goes above and beyond providing extraordinary customer service and recognizes the importance of hospitality in the area as well as serving the commu-nity. Examples include wineries, restaurants, hotels, tourist attrac-tions and golf courses.

Anticipating a packed house at Caesars Windsor, the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Com-merce Annual Business Excellence Awards is becoming one of the area’s “premiere business events,” according to Natalie Henderson.

The BEA chair is looking forward to the 26th annual gala on Wednesday, April 20. It will showcase the applause-worthy achievements of local organi-zations. “There are great nominees every year,” Henderson says.

A new award category, Pillars of Our Community, recognizes a registered not-for-profi t organiza-tion, philanthropic organization or person that has made an outstand-ing contribution to the social, cul-tural or economic well-being of the Greater Windsor-Essex Area. The nominee has positively impacted the community and demonstrated best business practices. The goals of their organization refl ect a com-

munity need, one with a clearly defi ned strategic plan.

“The Pillars of Our Community award takes the place of our inno-vation award. There are 12 awards again this year,” says Henderson. “This has been a long time coming for us. It’s the fi rst time a not-for-profi t can be eligible to win one of our awards; this category is the only one they can be nominated in.”

She adds that looking around Windsor-Essex, “there is a ton of not-for-profi t organizations that do so much for our community. We thought they should be recognized.”

An independent panel of judges has selected three fi nalists from a list of 27 nominees put forward by community members. A second panel, comprised of past winners and members of local businesses, will choose the winner from among United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County, the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County and Windsor-Essex Chil-

dren’s Aid Society. The judges’ fi nal pick will be

announced during the BEA’s din-ner and awards gala at Caesars Windsor. “It will be exciting for all,” Henderson says.

The BEA believes it is important to encourage not-for-profi t organiza-tions doing important work. “There is a lot of volunteer and donated time and e� ort that goes into these orga-nizations,” Henderson says. “It’s the behind-the-scenes work that we really want to shine a light on. Showing their excellence is what these awards are really all about.”

The three fi nalists for the award “are very well known and all have separate achievements that have positively impacted the commu-nity. This is a great way to feature their work,” Henderson says. “We’re hoping this will set the stage for even more nominees next year.”

Winning the 2015 Small Com-pany of the Year award was a big deal for Jodi Mason and her team at Urban Home.

They are still feeling the positive vibrations of the thrilling gala event and the publicity the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Com-merce’s honour has generated.

Learning that Urban Home had been nominated for an award was a pleasant surprise for Mason,

Urban Home’s owner and princi-pal design consultant.

“I never did find out where that initiated,” she says.

Like other nominees, Mason was invited to tell the BEA judges about her business in a questionnaire, revealing the company’s origins, its growth and profitability, job creation and employee relations, customer satisfaction, service and measurable quality improvements, innovation, research and develop-ment, community and charitable

involvement, environmental responsibility and sustainability, and health and wellness.

The exercise of completing the questionnaire let Mason reflect on how far Urban Home has come. Established in 2003, she began by providing home staging services for real estate properties. Today, Urban Home is a luxury interior design studio with its own select furnishings boutique at 4409 Sem-inole St., Windsor.

Urban Home offers residential, commercial and hospitality design services and space planning, on-site consultations, material selections, product sourcing, accessorizing and personal shopping. The furni-ture boutique makes inspired, high quality pieces accessible to design clients as well as homeowners cre-ating their own interiors.

Appreciating how a person’s sur-roundings can influence how they feel and function in that space, Urban Home decided to offer a room makeover for one child who is chronically ill, disabled or dis-advantaged and may spend a lot of time in the bedroom.

The first annual Urban Angel Bedroom Makeover Event was held in 2013.

After consulting with the make-over recipient, the team transforms the space into a supportive, uplift-ing and special place. Staff commit their time, expertise, energy and enthusiasm and Urban Home cov-ers their costs.

Last year, approximately 40 companies were nominated for the BEA’s Small Company Award. The top three semi-finalists received recognition at the chamber’s 25th Anniversary Business Excellence Awards.

“To be a part of the top three was great!” Mason recalls.

Although Mason had been a judge for the ATHENA award some years ago, she was unprepared for the splendor of the silver anniver-sary event. “It felt like we were at the Oscars,” she says.

“The chamber made us all feel very special. Everybody was so

excited.” Videos of all the nominees were

played for the guests. Mason was impressed by the achievements of local organizations. When Urban Home was announced as the win-ner of the small business award, “it was awesome but really nerve-

wracking because my fellow nomi-nees and their businesses were so deserving.”

Says Mason: “When they called our name, it was really exhilarat-ing and emotional. I never experi-enced anything like that before.”S E E M A S O N O N P G . H 1 6

Envisioning the best options for launching their careers back in 1983, Brian Schwab, John Savage and Stephen Savage determined Windsor-Essex was the place to be. They have continued to believe in their community, from the early years of establishing Cypher Sys-tems Group (CSG) to growing it to one of the region’s largest em-ployers and one of Canada’s most diverse technology companies.

CSG also has a strong social conscience, shown through the company’s support of many local community initiatives and global

humanitarian causes. Examining more than three

decades of CSG’s positive actions, the Business Excellence Awards Committee has recognized the company with the Believe Windsor Essex Award. The award honours a locally grown company that gives back to the community through business and philanthropy.

Describing themselves as “a tech-nology company that happens to sell insurance,” the CSG innovators and entrepreneurs originally identified a corporate niche and developed the proprietary technology to fill it.

The company broadened its reach throughout the 1990s, ex-

panding its businesses and es-tablishing itself as the dominant developer and supplier of point of sale technology in the Canadian in-surance industry. The medical in-surance business was soon added.

Since the early 2000s, CSG’s strategic product development has anticipated and kept pace with the needs of IT, medical as-sistance, health care management, publishing, entertainment and government. Working with some of Canada’s largest brands, CSG con-tinues to advance through techni-cal innovation, business expansion and enhanced customer service.

Nick Ciarlariello

Born and raised in Windsor, Nick Ciarlariello is the Owner and President of Modern Moulding Inc.—a company that provides outstanding customer service and supplies stucco contractors with material and custom manufactured stucco mouldings. They also specialize in custom in-home interior designs such as fireplaces, crown mouldings, and other custom designs.

Since 1996, Modern Moulding has used its specialized, artistic design process to earn the respect and partnership of many con-tractors and homeowners. For most of the local stucco contractors, Modern Moulding is their go-to supply company for all of their stucco needs.

Modern Moulding is the premier choice for durable pre-coated foam mouldings and is a leading manufacturer of custom exterior

and interior trims, columns, cornices, caps and bases, mantels, arches, keystones, and any other custom creation the customer can dream of.

Ciarlariello was able to identify a niche market in pool copings and has spent the past few years perfecting the product. As a result, Modern Moulding has expanded to include manufacturing innovative pool coping kits and distributes them both locally and across North America

Ciarlariello has been instrumental in growing his key product line, DuRock Alfacing Ltd., in the Windsor market. When Ciarlari-ello first started his relationship with DuRock, the product was not very well-known in Windsor. Since the partnership, DuRock is now one of the most popular choices for stucco in the area. Ciarlariello believes he owes it all to carrying a good product and giving the customer what they want at all times.

Imad Najjar

Imad Najjar immigrated to Canada in 1992 with faith, dreams, and a vision.

Landing in Toronto he soon began paving his way. After his ar-rival in Canada Najjar soon moved to Windsor where he attended the University of Windsor and with little comprehension of the

English language, he completed a degree in political science.

Najjar sponsored his parents and brothers who joined him in Canada in 1998.

He started his first used car business in 2000. In 2002, after his brothers graduated from the University of Windsor, they started helping him on a part-time basis.

Najjar and his brothers expanded Rocky Motors from their first location at Howard and Eugenie to their current home at 975 Tecumseh Rd. E.

In 2007 an opportunity presented itself in downtown Windsor to open a restaurant. Najjar consulted with friends and profession-als and everybody told him the location he had in mind was a bad location and that downtown Windsor had become downtrodden. Yet Najjar stuck with his instinct. After months of renovations, Mazaar’s doors were open for business in August 2007.

Najjar plans to turn Mazaar into a chain restaurant and has already expanded with a second location in South Windsor in July 2015 and is currently scouting for yet another location in Windsor and/or possibly the Michigan area. Windsor and Essex County have been very supportive of Najjar’s businesses and he believes strongly in giving back to his com-munity. Najjar is proud to align himself with many local charities and organizations.

Kyle Pinsonneault

Kyle Pinsonneault is President of Canadian Executive Search Group Inc. (CES), a full cycle recruitment agency with a com-bined staffing experience of 30+ years.

Pinsonneault started CES in 2011 and has grown it to a multimil-lion dollar international recruitment firm—all before the age of

30. With nine offices across Canada and the U.S., CES has a proven track record in re-cruiting for all businesses, including Fortune 500 corporations, while always providing 100% customer satisfaction. From a long term perspective, CES is focused on growing into a global leader for the staffing world. Ultimately they expect to have between 50-100 locations internationally.

CES is the recipient of The Chatham Daily News’ Readers Choice Award for “Best Em-

ployment Agency in Chatham-Kent” for the past two years.

CES is a contributor to the Canadian Cancer Society through their casual dress down Fridays, where an employee must donate $1 to dress down. At the end of each year, CES donates all funds plus an additional amount to the Canadian Cancer So-ciety. CES is also a sponsor of the Windsor/Essex Pride Associa-tion and a regular sponsor to HRPA. The company also sponsors multiple local sports teams.

Pinsonneault has his Bachelors degree in Industrial Technology Management with a specialization in Industrial Logistics and a minor in Human Resources from the Illinois Institute of Technol-ogy. He has also been asked to speak at different conventions including IIT Entrepreneur and Junior Achievement.

Pinsonneault, who grew up in Essex County, volunteers any-where from 20 to 80 hours a week with the Chatham Y Pool Sharks swim team.

Infinit works with their customers to ensure they understand not only how to best use their products, but why. Help is provided to determine their fluid loss rates and to create race nutrition strategies to ensure they

perform at their absolute best.

Infinit has a satisfaction guaranteed policy where if a customer is unhappy with a product it will replace it free. If the customer is still not happy, a full refund is made to the customer. Since 2006 there has never been a request to refund.

Darcy Haggith, Infinit CEO, personally volunteers at the Windsor Regional Cancer Clinic for four hours every Wednesday morn-ing. Infinit has supported local charities and races, such as The Windsor Triathlon – Hospice, Running Flat Races – Run for He-roes and Running from Cancer, by providing on-course nutrition and prizes to generate greater charitable donations. Lee and Maria’s Delivery

Lee and Maria’s Delivery, located at 317 Applewood Rd. in Kingsville, delivers fresh local fruits and vegetables from their own farm and others in Windsor-Essex to homes and businesses across the region.

Lee and Maria’s Delivery has seen a substantial increase in mem-bers and sales year-over-year. In their first year in 2013 they had 70 members. This past season they reached 620 total members.

Innovation is a key to Lee and Maria’s Delivery. They are in the process of develop-ing a new software system that will handle signups, inventory tracking, and payments and will also be customized for fundraising programs.

The company constantly promotes local farmers and educates their members about local food. Each delivery comes with a newsletter highlighting how crops are growing, details on where the produce is coming from, and includes recipes for some of the lesser known fruits and vegetables.

Lee and Maria’s Delivery launched a fundraising program with L’Ecole Bellewood, helping the school get away from selling chocolate bars and cookie dough. Instead, parents were encour-aged to sign-up for their service, with 5% of the sales going back to the school. They also worked on a one-time produce box sale, which parents could purchase to get all the ingredients for a local Thanksgiving meal. The school raised over $2,000 and the students learned about eating healthy.

They also launched a program called “Sponsor a Bin” where members can choose to donate $3 each delivery to the program. A large order of produce is then delivered each week to the Wind-sor Residence for Young Men.

The glamorous dinner and awards event was a night to cher-ish. The BEA’s recognition is “a huge thing,” Mason says.

“I’m a big believer in baby steps. You just keep your feet moving and get it done. You don’t realize you’re getting anywhere until you turn and look back and see where you’ve been.”

Creating and growing a business is not something she did for recog-nition. “I’m just doing what I love.”

She is grateful for the BEA’s pat on the back: “It feels really good,” Mason says.

On the occasional day that seems a bit overwhelming, she reminds herself: “Look, you’ve won the small business award. You know what you’re doing. You’ve got this.”

Being an award winner “instills confidence and the idea that you are on the right path,” Mason finds.

The boost impacts the entire Urban Home team.

“It’s our award – the team’s award. They were all instrumental in it. It makes them feel good about them-

selves, their con-tributions to the team and help-ing us get to that place.”

Mason adds, “I think it’s awesome the BEA provides the opportunity for local individu-als and businesses to make it known

to people that they exist and spot-light the work that is done by their organizations.”

Nomination process

The Business Excellence Awards (BEA) Committee reviews the award categories to ensure they match the current business cli-mate. Each September, the BEA Committee begins accepting nomi-nations for the following year’s awards. The first stage includes using a simple nomination form including a 100 word summary of why the individual or business should be nominated.

Any individual or business can submit a nomination for a Business Excellence Award according to the criteria outlined for each award category. Chamber membership not a requirement.

After the initial screening pro-cess, a select group of nominees, the semi-finalists, are sent an information questionnaire to be completed and returned to the Windsor-Essex Regional Cham-ber of Commerce. The nominee is asked to provide specific infor-mation on how they meet each of the criteria. The questionnaire requires some investment of time to complete and all documents and information are treated in confi-dence. The judges base their scores on the submissions.

An independent judging panel comprised of local businessper-sons and community leaders complete judging of the semi-finalists in each award category. No member of the judging panel shall have direct familial or finan-cial involvement with any of the finalists selected. Each judge is asked to sign a conflict of interest and confidentiality agreement. Where a conflict is perceived the submission is removed from that judge’s package. The judging pan-el will complete its deliberations and finalists will be selected based upon who best adheres to the eligi-bility criteria and the overall goals of recognizing business excellence. The judge’s decisions are final and remain confidential.

Finalists selected for each award are announced at a News Confer-ence held annually in January. All Finalists are recognized and a winner from each category is announced at the Business Excel-lence Awards event.

Aligning itself with expert talent in make-up and lash ex-tensions, Blinc Beauty Lounge was born within the new location. Soon, Dry Parlour will be launching their first ever private label product and service line: VALEN-CIA, an organic, FDA approved air brush tanning system.Owners George Kalivas and Sylvia Gounakis do what-ever they can to give back to the com-munity. Held at Essex Golf and Coun-try Club, “we are celebrating a very special milestone,” says the Chamber’s president and CEO Matt Marchand.

“The tournament began in 1936, the same year of the Masters PGA golf tournament. This year, we are looking forward to hosting a first class, fun tournament… our golf-ers will be privy to a great opportu-nity for client entertainment and networking.”

Here, some notable milestones over the tournament’s 80 years:

• 1936 - the Windsor Board of Trade (now Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce) comprised of business profession-als and leaders including doctors, judges and mayors decided to host an annual event and to support the new local golf courses

• 1930’s Tournament Winner - Dr. George Laing, one of this area’s top athletes, won 3 years in a row

• 1940’s Tournament Winner – Jack Smith won 3 times during the 40’s

• 1950’s Tournament Winner – Leo Fisher again winning 3 times

• 1960’s Tournament Winners – Sam Freed winning 5 times (late 50s and early 60s) and Fred Nicoll winning 7 times

• 1970s Tournament Winners – Frank Strahl winning 7 times

• 1970s and 1980 Tournament Winner – with the most wins Vin-cent Gagnier at 9

• 1980s Tournament Winner – Ray Manion winning 4 times

• 1992 brought team play• 1999 – largest tournament

with two shotgun starts (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) with 276 golfers

• 2000 – First Woman to place in the top standing – Most Honest Team

• Mayor Frank Wansburough placed in the winner’s circle 5 times

• In the last two decades there have been only two hole in ones in one during the tournament

Helping more women blaze their own trails on career paths in tra-ditionally male-dominated fields, Shelley Fellows is the winner of the 2016 ATHENA Award.

Presented at the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Excellence Awards gala, the ATHENA Award honours men and women who are recognized for business and pro-fessional excellence, for commu-nity service and for mentoring and providing a role model to encour-age women to achieve their leader-ship potential. In 1996, Windsor was the first Canadian city to pres-ent the ATHENA Award, embrac-ing the importance of empowering women.

Fellows is the Vice President of Operations and co-owner of Radix Inc., a Maidstone-based company that specializes in advanced tech-nology solutions for industrial applications and automation. She is a member of the management team that led Radix to be recog-nized as one of Profit Magazine’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Compa-nies in Canada.

The BEA honoured Radix with its Innovation Award in 2007 and 2015, most recently praising Radix for its market leading soft-ware product, Link2Logic. A cer-tified AIA integrator, Radix has currently received an award from Ford Motor Company for excel-lence in manufacturing process technology.

Fellows is pleased to point out

the Radix team includes several female engineers and technicians and a female electrician. She devotes much of her time to devel-oping women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers.

Her efforts to advance more women in the sciences and trades have included being part of the Softech Alliance (now WEtech Alliance) founding steering com-mittee and the founding board of Workforce WindsorEssex.

Fellows is involved with the WindsorEssex Economic Devel-opment Corporation (vice chair, chairperson and past chair), WESucceed (advisor and men-tor), Women in Skilled Trades, WE Help, Regional Industry Com-mittee for Windsor/Essex, Build A Dream, Windsor’s Women of Influence and 100 Women Who Care.

Taking a seat at roundtable events with provincial and fed-eral political leaders, Fellows has

represented the Windsor-Essex region and the manufacturing sector.

Fellows’ own company received

unusual national attention by appearing on CBC’s business real-ity TV show, The Big Decision, in 2012.

Investor, restaurateur and TV personality Jim Treliving gave Radix his thumbs’ up by offering to invest in the company.

The Multicultural Council of Wind-sor and Essex County As a leader in cultural diversity, multiculturalism and human rights, the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County (MCC) creates a welcoming community for all through education, community engagement and promotion of diversity and equality.The 42-year-old organiza-tion helps immigrants settle and integrate into their new country by assist-ing them with their understanding of Canadian life, acquiring life skills and increasing their confidence and com-petence in handling daily situations. Demonstrating best practices in core

areas of service in the community, MCC advances culturally competent health care through the Nurse Practi-tioner Clinic, connecting newcomers

to the services and primary care in the area. The coun-cil’s Language Translation and Interpretation Services provide the community with trained and qualified translation and interpreta-tion professionals in over 50 languages.

An annual highlight for Windsor-Essex residents and

visitors is the Carrousel of the Nations Festival, coordinated by MCC since 1976. The award-winning festival con-nects people to the community’s wide and fascinating array of cultures.

Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid SocietyVulnerable children have been protected by the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society since 1899. Providing round-the-clock child protection ser-vices, the society’s mission is carried out by 400 staff, 231 foster parents and 227 volunteers.The organization works collaboratively with more than 40 service providers and cultural groups to offer enrichment, education and supports to children and families.Acting as the barometer of health and well-being for local families, the society plays an active role in com-

munity planning initiatives. In April, the new Central 33 Hub is opening in Leamington, giving Essex County res-idents centralized access to the City

of Windsor’s employment and social services/Ontario Works team, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, Community Living Essex County, Children First and the Windsor-Essex Chil-dren’s Aid Society.Providing services to one

in every eight children in Windsor-Essex, the society

has been able to offer enhanced programming since the Bill & Dot Muzzatti Child & Family Centre was added to the Society’s Riverside Dr. E. property in 2013.

United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County Committed to reducing poverty, supporting kids and families and strengthening neighbourhoods across the local community, United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex Coun-ty creates solutions and mobilizes partners, volunteers and donors to uplift people every day.One in five people live in poverty in Windsor-Essex. United Way strives to improve and empower their lives, developing strategies designed to give people the tools they need to find pathways out of poverty. United Way’s On Track to Success program helps kids succeed in school and grow into healthy adults. When school is closed, the Summer Lunch Program provides children with healthy lunches. The Emergency As-sistance fund helps people encoun-tering tough challenges.

With its partners, United Way has been instrumental in decreasing wait times for counselling from 12 weeks to zero, boosting access to fresh and healthy

food, improving neighbourhood

conditions, and growing community gardens from two to 25. Bringing people together, United Way hosts events with partners, including Labour Appreciation Night in partner-ship with the Windsor & District Labour Council and the Volunteers Changing Lives Awards in partnership with The Windsor Star.
