He served in World War II , with the Coast Guard Reserve as a lieutenant commander. He was executive officer and law officer for the service ' s Port Security Command in New York. A Republican , Mr. Thornhill served as clerk of the Suffolk County Surrogate ' s Court from 1946 to 1952, when he resumed his law practice in Sayville. He was also owner of Thornhill' s Pharma- cy, in Sayville , which was founded bv his father , the late Sewell Thornhill. ROBERT E. THORNHILL, 55.a lawyer, died in his home at 10Fairway West in Sayville Satur-day night.

A graduate of Wesleyan Univer-sity, he earned a law degree atNew York University , in 19,'H , andfor several years was with theNew York law firm of Bingham ,Engler , Jones & Houston.

He served in World War II ,with the Coast Guard Reserve asa lieutenant commander. He was executive officer and law officer

for the service's Port SecurityCommand in New York.

A Republican , Mr. Thornhillserved as clerk of the SuffolkCounty Surrogate 's Court from1946 to 1952, when he resumed hislaw practice in Sayville. He wasalso owner of Thornhill ' s Pharma-cy, in Sayville , which was foundedbv his father , the late SewellThornhill.

A past president of the SayvilleRotary Club , Mr. Thornhill was atrustee of " the Sayville Congrega-tional Church and a director ofSouthside Hospital in Bay Shore.

He leaves his wife, the formerMary Bennett , and a daughter ,Susan.

"Since our present quarters arelimited for the present congrega-tion , we are going to erect a newchurch on Columbus Avenue , EastPatchogue," they said.

"Before the erection of our newchurch , we would like to sell thepresent church , located on Robin-son Boulevard and Columbus Ave-nue. The building is of frame con-struction with imitation brickshingles, and on a business prop-erty.
