Book Week Special and heartfelt thanks to Mrs Losiak for her outstanding organisation of Book Week. It was a fantastic week full of fun and focus on the joy of books and reading. Thanks to all the parents who assisted with costumes for our parade. Thank you to our staff for participating with such enthusiasm and creativity. Athletics Carnivals Many thanks to Mrs Ward, Mrs Reedy and Ms Spence for their wonderful organisation of our Athletics Carnivals (3-6 and K-2) which were highly successful and enjoyable. Congratulations and best of luck to all students who qualified for Zone, and will proudly represent Barnier on 4

th September.

Twilight Professional Learning for Staff On Wednesday 15

th August all staff participated in professional

learning in the area of English. We looked at the Learning Progressions, teachers working in stage teams to look at student data and the implications for planning and differentiating teaching and learning tasks for students. There was lots of high quality professional dialogue among staff and the night was extremely student focused, informative and productive. The event was planned and presented by our School English Team, they did an absolutely outstanding job. ‘Fill a Truck for a Farmer’ and ‘A Fiver For a Farmer’ Many thanks to our wonderful Ms Spence for organising these fabulous fundraisers for our farmers. Thanks must also go to all members of our school community that donated non-perishable items (filling not one but ten trucks) and donations of money which will be used to purchase prepaid gift cards. These will be sent to families in drought-affected areas. The big and generous hearts in the Barnier community are just wonderful! Blacktown Music Festival Our school Choir and Senior Dance Group will be performing at Wyndham College on 3

rd September. I wish all these beautiful

students, and their teachers, the very best of luck, I know they’ve all worked extremely hard, and look forward to seeing them as I have a ticket for the evening concert. A special thank you to Mrs Weisback and Ms Thompson for all their dedication and hard work with our performance groups.

Special Visitor On Thursday 30th August it was our very great pleasure to welcome Mrs Cathy Brennan, Executive Director, School Performance and Mr Rick Seretis, Director Educational Leadership, to our school. Mrs Brennan and Mr Seretis visited a number of classrooms to see teaching and learning in action and spoke with students and staff about the wonderful things happening in our school. They were most impressed and very happy to have the opportunity to share special moments with such special people. Jersey Day and Father’s Day Many thanks to our wonderful P&C parents for organising and running our Father's Day events this week. Jersey Day was a great success as was our Father's Day stall and special Breakfast. Events such as these require a lot of time and effort on the part of our P&C parents. We so appreciate just how generous, passionate and committed our P&C parents are. It was truly wonderful to see so many dads, grandfathers, uncles and brothers here at the school enjoying time with our students. Kindergarten Enrolments for 2019 We are now accepting Kindergarten enrolments for 2019. If you have received an enrolment pack, please return it to the office as soon as possible so that we can include your child in our student numbers for 2019 and begin preparation for supporting their transition to ‘big school’. If you would like an interview to discuss any concerns regarding your child’s enrolment into Kindergarten, please contact the school office to arrange an interview with me or my Deputy Principal, Sharon Moon. We are very happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have. We have a Kindergarten parent information night coming up in Term 4 (November) which will provide new and not-so-new

parents with an abundance of very valuable updated information. I strongly encourage all 2019 Kindergarten parents to come along. Teaching Your Children to be Organised Some children are highly organised while others seem to always have a schoolbag full of dog-eared scraps of paper, overdue library books, outdated school notices, stale remnants of lunch and any number of strange objects. It is no coincidence that these students often under-achieve at school and find it almost impossible to meet deadlines in high school and in the workforce. They need support to help them develop the organisational skills we all need to get through our busy, complex, complicated days. Many children never develop these skills during their school days and struggle in their first years at university or in a job. One of the best things we can do for them is give them ways they can organise their paperwork and homework, get started on tasks in a timely fashion, keep track of books and assignments, concentrate on what needs to be done, plan for deadlines and keep all their school related material in designated spaces. An impossible task? Not with modern technology, colour-coded folders, a desk and shelves at home and a weekly plan for what lies ahead. Some ideas and suggestions …. Make use of mobile-phone and internet programmes to organise a calendar, send reminders, and sound the alarm. Everyone is amenable to using electronic means of organisation and can base their whole life around their organisers. Students are likely to go into jobs where they are expected to use sophisticated message and calendar systems, so why not utilise these systems now. Keep a large, clear family calendar in a visible place like the kitchen and use different coloured pens for each member of the family. Keep a filing shelf with a coloured folder for each child. File all notices, assignments, and important material for that child’s activities. Children can also keep coloured folders for their subjects at school which they update every day. Establish daily routines for mealtimes, screen time, homework, leisure, bed times so your children already have a structure to their day. Spend a set time every day checking on dates and deadlines.

Discuss classroom routines with your children’s teacher so you can follow and reinforce them at home. Discuss ways the teacher thinks your child could work at improved organisation skills. Share your own planning and organisation tips. What applies to work, usually works with school too. Model tidiness, a place for important things like bills and keys, a routine to getting your own tasks done. Show your children ways to make a start on a task, how to break it up into manageable chunks, how to prepare a mind-map to plan each step. Share how in your own life you take big tasks one step at a time. This will help save your child from being daunted by what seems an impossible set of demands and build confidence in their own capacity to get things done. Ask an older student sibling or neighbour to act as a management coach. Write every event, target and assignment in large letters on a calendar in their work area and have a short daily discussion about what can be crossed off, what progress is being made and any looming deadlines.

Have a great fortnight,

Mrs Mandy Hollis

PJ Day & Pancake Breakfast

On Wednesday August 15th, our Year Six students held a pancake stall and Pyjama Mufti Day to

raise money for their Farewell and gift to the school. The students arrived at school eagerly and

sold close to 900 pancakes and raised just over $1200 which is a fantastic achievement. This

would not be possible without the fantastic participation from the parents and families of the Year

six students for their donation of pancake shakers and the Barnier Public School community for

participating in this fabulous event. Thank you to all the wonderful staff who assisted in cooking

the pancakes on Wednesday morning, a special mention to Mrs Housbey who poured each of

the 870 pancakes!

Athletics Carnival

On Monday the 20th of August our annual Athletics Carnival was held at Blacktown International

Sports Park. It was a bright and sunny day which meant it was perfect conditions for our athletes.

There was a great turn out with a large number of our students eager to try their very best. More

impressively was the consistent encouragement from all students as they cheered on their

peers.

Congratulations to everyone on a great day. Thank you to all the parents that came out and

cheered on the students. A big thank you to those parents who also came and assisted setting

up and packing down.

We wish all our athletes the best of luck at the zone carnival which is to be held on September

4th at Blacktown International Sports Park.

Book Week

Barnier celebrated Book Week with some amazing events this week. On Tuesday, in line with this year’s theme, ‘Find Your Treasure’ our Stage 3 students led the rest of the school on an amazing Treasure Hunt around the school, sharing this years shortlisted books and activities. Wednesday dazzled us not only with a sunny day for our Book Parade but also sensational character costumes worn by our students. Everyone bopped and danced as they paraded their marvellous out-fits in front of parents and families before ending with a picnic lunch. Our passionate teachers finished the day by running a Reading Relay where students rotated around and listened to stories read by teachers of their choice. On Thursday children were entertained by our visiting Book Week performers, ‘Books To Life’ who put on an amazing show bringing this year’s prize winning story, ‘A Walk in the Bush’ to life. On behalf of the library, we would like to thank our extremely generous community for their

purchases and book donations at our annual Book Fair. As a result our school will receive

substantial rewards from Scholastic that will be put towards additional resources that will benefit

our Barnier students. This would be impossible without your continual support – Thank you!
