Upcoming Events

From the Principal

Our students enjoyed such success at the two swimming carnivals recently. The students demonstrated such friendship, collegiality, support for their team and such exemplary team spirit with their dress, continual war cries and their willingness and enthusiasm to swim a length to earn a point for their team house.

Congratulations to each student who attended. You each contributed to a fantastic day!

Our Service Exceeds ExpectationsThe below email was recently received from a parent who is new to the Lindisfarne community.

“I just wanted to send a quick note of thanks for the warm welcome Lindisfarne has given our family.

Julie Henderson was an excellent ambassador for the School in guiding us through the application, interview, and tour process (achieving it all in one day to meet our short visit window). She made everything very easy for us and our four children during a stressful time. Thank you!

The letters over the holidays to our little ones were a really nice touch which helped them feel welcome. The orientation days, buddy system, and parent orientation were also great.

We have moved quite a bit over the years and Lindisfarne is the sixth school our children have attended. The processes and systems you have in place for new students/families are really top notch and I just wanted to let you know how much it is appreciated.”

Side RoadsIt has been noted that a number of parents have been using the side access roads to drop students off and pick them up. This practice is not to continue due to the safety risk to our students. Students should be dropped at the parent pickup level. The side road is to be used only by delivery trucks, our school buses and staff.

Noelene Wright, Assistant Principal - Head of Secondary

HSIE FacultyTerm 1 Excursion ProgramExcursions form an integral part of our students’ curriculum, linking local business, community and government organisations with our students in the study of current issues. The Term 1 Excursion program is as follows:• Friday 20 February: Year 11 Geography. Coastal

‘We will remember them’Do you have a family member who served in World War 1 or indeed the Gallipoli campaign? We would love to hear from you with a view to writing a short commemorative piece for this fortnightly column and/or commemorate their services at a school assembly. Please contact Mr Coverdale on [email protected] at School. Each fortnightly newsletter in the lead up to ANZAC Day we will recount an Australian action of the World War 1 campaign. After England declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, Australia called for enlistments in the Defence Forces. Germany held territories to the north of Australia. On 11 September 1914, Australia’s Naval and Military Expeditionary Forces landed at Rabaul. During September and October they took possession of German-held New Guinea and the neighbouring islands of the Bismark Archipelago. This was Australia’s first significant military action of World War 1.(Source: http://www.awm.gov.au/atwar/ww1/)

Bryson Coverdale, Director of Human Society and Its Environment.

LOTE this fortnightI would like to welcome new and continuing students who are studying a foreign language this year. At Lindisfarne, students have the opportunity to study either French or Japanese during their secondary schooling, with the mandatory one hundred hours being completed in Year 8. Students in Year 7 will study a semester of each language, giving them a “taste” of both French and Japanese. As a part of the Year 7 language program, students will be enrolled in Language Perfect. This is an online program, providing students with the opportunity to revise, build upon and extend their linguistic knowledge and understanding of the language they are currently studying.

Visiting Student from Nouvelle CalédonieOn Tuesday this week, we welcomed a young French boy from New Caledonia into our school. Jules Corbière is visiting Australia with his family and he spent the day at school attending classes and experiencing life in an Australian school. It was fantastic to see our students and staff so accommodating and the enthusiasm our students demonstrated in practising their French language skills was magnificent. This was a great experience for Lindisfarne students to learn first-hand from someone their own age about our closest French-speaking neighbour.

Nabari Nishi High School Visit 8-15 MarchOur Japanese sister school, Nabari Nishi, will arrive on Sunday 8 March, for an eight day school and homestay program.Thirteen students will be accompanied by two teachers to experience Australian school life and enjoy a five day Lindisfarne school program.During their stay, the students will have special English classes to improve conversation, a visit to the Sunshine Avenue campus as well as speciality cooking and sport lessons.Mrs Whiticker has kindly offered her house for a welcome BBQ on their arrival where each student will be introduced to their homestay family.Nabari’s visits are an important cultural link to our Asian neighbour and provide Lindisfarne students with the opportunity to learn about Japan, build international bridges and create wonderful friendships.Lindisfarne recognises the support and generosity of the thirteen families who have offered their homes to accommodate these students.

Marg Gula, French Teacher

There are two car park levels and a student car park at the Mahers Lane campus. For the safety of your children and others please follow these guidelines.

Before and after school the lower car park level is used for buses only. Parents, please do not park in or drive through this level before or after school – use the top level car park. With approximately twelve buses driving through this area of a morning and afternoon, this should decrease the congestion.

The top car park level (where the shelter with seating is located) is designed as the student drop off and pick up area. To avoid congestion in this area we ask the following:

• Parents to move as far along the top pick up area as possible.

• Do not stop on the crossing or in the middle of the road – move to one side

• Do not stop or park in the allocated disabled car park

The car park on the adjoining block is for senior students’ parking. In the afternoon parents are often parking in this area to pick up their children at the same time as our senior students are trying to leave. We are concerned with the number of younger students running behind vehicles that are reversing. The correct pick up area is in the top driveway of the main school block.

Another area of concern is Mahers Lane itself. Please do not double park to collect students or do a U–turn across the double lines. For the safety of all please collect students from the top driveway.

Classroom Helpers @ LindisfarneThis term we will once again be running our successful Classroom Helpers @ Lindisfarne Course. The course consists of a series of one hour workshops run over a four week period commencing on Friday 20 February at 9:00am. The course provides an opportunity for participants to acquire new knowledge about literacy and gain an increased insight into your own children as literacy learners. It will also provide an opportunity for hands-on experience and will include demonstrations of learning activities that classroom helpers may be involved during literacy time. Helpful hints for parents who wish to read with their children at home will also be provided. The course has been designed to enable strong partnerships between home and school to be further developed and to recognise and value the role of parental involvement in the classroom setting.I encourage all those who wish to be parent helpers in literacy time this year to attend these informative sessions. If you are not able to attend all four sessions please indicate your preference on the registration form which is attached to this newsletter. I look forward to working with you in the near future. Please email [email protected] if you have any queries.

Instrumental and Speech and Drama lessonsLindisfarne boasts a thriving and inclusive music culture with a wide range of instrumental lessons and ensembles held across both campuses. Studio lessons are offered during school time and include both individual and small group classes with specialist teachers. These lessons are usually thirty minutes long, on a rotating timetable. Parents are billed directly by the studio teachers once the agreement on the ‘Application for lessons’ form is signed and returned to school. For enquiries please contact Tina Ross by phone or email at Sunshine Avenue campus, or Lucie Schuricht at the Mahers Lane campus. Enquiries can also be made directly to the studio teachers.

Lindisfarne’s New ChaplainHi everyone. I’m Rev Chad the new Lindisfarne Chaplain. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the families I have not yet had the opportunity to meet and tell you a little about my role at Lindisfarne.I commenced working at

Lindisfarne in May 2014. I was employed as assistant Chaplain to Fr Glenn, working three days a week at the Sunshine Avenue campus. Toward the end of last year when Fr Glenn announced he was moving to Melbourne, I applied for the full time position and was fortunate enough to be the successful applicant. My role is structured a little differently to Fr Glenn’s. I will still spend two days a week (Monday and Thursday) at the Sunshine Avenue campus, and three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) at the Mahers Lane campus. My main responsibilities are to teach the Religious Education program across the entire school, run regular chapel services

(I call them “Worship Sessions”) for each year group, and be a member of Lindisfarne’s wonderful Pastoral Care network.

I wrote a little about the Primary Chaplaincy program in the Primary newsletter last week, but would like to give

a brief outline of the Senior Chaplaincy program for our Mahers Lane families. I have already had at

least one session with every year group, and the timetable is structured so that I meet with

every year group from Years 5 to 10 for one

period a week, while Years 11 and 12 will have one combined session per fortnight. I believe most students’ timetables simply refer to “Chapel periods” but the chaplaincy program will not only consist of “Chapel services.” Each fortnightly cycle will include one teaching session and one worship session, and my hope is that the program I am writing will be engaging, interesting, and beneficial to our students. In my introductory session with all year groups I told them to think of me as their Spiritual Director. My role is not just teaching religious studies or running chapel services. I hope to help students explore the nature of spirituality and guide them through the process and practice of spiritual awareness, which is, after all, foundational to all religions.I am very excited about the potential of this year, and I look forward to getting to know students and families as the year continues. Please come and say “Hi” if you are on campus. It would be lovely to meet you.Blessings.

Rev Chad Rynehart, School Chaplain

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2015

LETTER TO PARENTS

In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12-14 May 2015.

TUESDAY 12 MAY WEDNESDAY 13 MAY THURSDAY 14 MAY Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) Writing

Reading Numeracy

In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school. Friday 15 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:

are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, Braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet the needs of individual students.

Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed.

Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html.
