SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTAs week eight of term draws to a close it seems like we have been operating at full capacity for much longer than four weeks. The compression of the available time to complete work, especially for Year 12, is evident as the timing and types of tasks are adjusted. Staff are taking extra care to ensure they have their students ready to present for the HSC. The pressure this year is higher than normal and the effect of it can be seen on the majority of both students and staff as they ‘dig deep’ to meet deadlines. It will be important in the remaining weeks that students are in all available lessons and asking for support where they need it before they are at their wits end. We will get through this particularly challenging year by working together – students, staff and the support networks at home.

The SRC are back into their role of promoting school spirit and connectedness. If you haven’t checked out the videos on our social media page – you are missing out. Today was pyjama day but I can assure parents it was no slumber party. Just some light-hearted fun to bring students and staff together and help them reconnect after the restrictions of the pandemic. Well done team, ably supported by Ms Mainey.

In the coming week Year 10 students will receive the first bundle of information they need to make decisions about their study pattern for the 2022 HSC. The Course Information booklet sets out the range of subjects the school is able to offer students in the coming year. Obviously not all of these courses will be viable to run but the 36 or so most sought after will eventually make it to the timetabling stage. It is important that students attempt to take in as much of the information as they can so that they “get their subject pattern” right as early as possible. A failure to do that now can severely limit a students options by the end of the HSC year when they may be considering further study in a university course. Every time a student changes their pattern of study the hill to success gets steeper and success less likely. The information going to students next week will culminate in an Information evening in the first week of August and the selection process that follow shortly after. Now is the time to be asking all the questions – at this point. None of them are silly.

The building works at the school are progressing with the canteen taking shape. Staff and students have been tolerant of the extra noise and activity and for the most part have been able to remain focused on their core tasks. The builder is expected to finish the canteen around the end of July and Kydd Food staff are eager to get out of their temporary “cubby house’ and into their new home.

I will take this opportunity to remind parents that school jumpers are now available at the uniform shop. I would also remind students that there is no pedestrian, bicycle, scooter and skateboard access through the car park. Please avoid the area so the school can minimise the risk of injury to pedestrians. Student access is through the front gate, The carpark is not a drop off zone unless you are carrying an injury or have permission to drop and go from that location. Visitors to the school and staff have access to the carpark.

Two weeks to go. Semester One reports are currently being written and parents can expect them to be distributed by early August. Please look out for them and spend some time reviewing your child’s progress with them.

Mr Breen Mackney, Deputy Principal

LIBRARY NEWSIt's wonderful to see how our yearly reading challenge has ignited a real interest in reading. Students only need to read 15 books (fiction and non-fiction) this year to take part and I hope more and more students will take on the challenge. We continue to purchase the best Young Adult fiction titles and I would like students to remember that they can read a maximum of 3 picture books. Some of our picture books are worth reading and I would like to highlight a few interesting titles. Reading is not just about imagination. It also gives us the knowledge and information we need to form opinions and make choices. Through reading, we learn background information and context that is so essential in shaping our beliefs and values.

Reconciliation week was overshadowed by Covid 19 this year so it would be beneficial for students to read these short stories:
