SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTNew Vocational Education and Training facilities for our schoolLast week the NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Education announced a $17 million commitment to build specialist vocational education facilities at our school. This is in addition to the upgrade project that is already underway to provide new and refurbished learning spaces and facilities at the school.

Our school is one of two in the state chosen as pilot locations for the Vocational Schools Initiative and we are excited about the new opportunities this will offer for students from 2023 when the facilities are expected to become operational.

We are still in the early planning stages for this part of the school upgrade and we look forward to sharing more with you about our industry focus areas, what courses will be offered and what the facilities will include.

Thank you to our school leaders who represented the school at the media briefing and spoke to journalists about the vocational courses they are involved in now and their plans for further training and employment after school.

Upgraded school canteen open for businessOver the past few months the School Infrastructure team has been busy refurbishing our canteen to improve operation and service, and make sure it meets all the required food code standards.

This week the canteen will be back in operation providing a modern, light and bright environment for our staff and students as well as improved student servery areas. There’s also a new seating area and a facelift to the outside of the building, with new water bubblers.

The improvements to the canteen are part of early works for our broader school upgrade which is progressing. A request for tenders has been issued for the main upgrade works so a building contractor can be appointed. For more information visit the project webpage at;

Year 12—Last school term In all my career I cannot recall a more challenging and unique set of circumstances for HSC students as the ones our current cohort are facing in 2020. Our Year 12 students continue to approach their studies with commitment and resilience knowing that they have the full support of their teachers and that all year 12 students state wide are in the same position. The Year 12 teachers, the Welfare Team and the Learning Support team have been outstanding in providing ongoing support for our students and they have played a significant role in ensuring their continuity of learning and wellbeing throughout the year. Year 12 and parents will soon receive a summary of organisation for upcoming events and procedures including graduation, sign out and formal. The Executive Team have been engaged in planning these events to consider COVID restrictions. The biggest challenge is the factor of the unknown and the absence of a crystal ball. In saying that, the school is committed to providing our Class of 2020 Year 12 the school leaving experience they deserve to celebrate thirteen years of schooling, farewell them appropriately and wishing them all the best for their future. It is important that Year 12 continue to feel connected to each other and our school as they complete their studies. Thank you to Mrs Mackney, Head Teacher Welfare, and Mrs Fleming, Student Support Officer, for organising a Weekly Chit Chat Session on Wednesdays at lunch time where Year 12 students will have a chance to get together with each other and staff to talk and be provided with some extra TLC over Pizza. Year 12 are reminded of the importance of attending all lessons in these last few weeks to consolidate and revise their learning before the HSC exams begin early next term.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORT Cont'd..Preliminary Examinations Year 11 are preparing for the upcoming Preliminary Examinations. Exam preparation really begins the day your course begins, because your success depends on your day-to-day study habits as much as it depends on the more concentrated periods of study in the weeks leading up to the exam. If you have well-organised and complete notes and have regularly revised your work at the end of each topic or section, you are already on the way to success. However, in the weeks before the exam, you can aim for efficient and effective study by acting on the following steps.

• Organise your time • Make a study plan • Organise your space (physical and mental) • Organise your material • Do some research • Revise • Test yourself • Make your final preparations

The HSC Minimum Standard The NSW government is committed to requiring students to demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive the HSC from 2020. The HSC minimum standard exams are a series of short online tests in reading, writing and numeracy. Students need to achieve a Level 3 or a Level 4 in each exam. Only students who meet the HSC minimum standard in all three areas will receive an HSC credential. Students do not need to meet the HSC minimum standard to:

• Study HSC courses • Sit HSC exams • Receive HSC assessment and exam results • Receive an ATAR • Receive a Record of School Achievement

Students are given four chances a year to sit each exam, starting in Year 10. Students will sit each exam when we believe they are ready. Year 10, 11 and 12 students have begun sitting the exams at school. They are able to access their results and print their achievement certificates through their NESA Students Online account.

What is a minimum standard report? Students can access their minimum standard test results through their Schools Online account. They can also print a minimum standard report that clearly shows the level (1-4) that they achieved in the test. Level 3 is the minimum standard.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORT Cont'd..School Spirit Thank you to Mr Fugar and his team for holding a Mini Athletics Carnival on Monday. COVID regulations made the organisation very challenging but Mr Fugar was up to the task! It was lovely to see the students happy and smiling as they demonstrated their athletic prowess while enjoying the company of their peers outdoors. Thank you to all staff and students who committed to the afternoon and participated. A fun afternoon was had by all.

Thank you to Mrs Mainey and the SRC for their support of the Athletics Carnival and for their planned Beanies and Doughnuts Day on Friday. The proceeds from this day will go to support a young girl in our school community, who is terminally ill with brain cancer. This is an important event as not only does it build school spirit and connectedness and demonstrate the core value of teamwork, it also encourages self-reflection and gratitude. A sense of being thankful for the positive things that surround us and gratitude for the simple, yet important things in life like health, relationships and family. It is important to continue to remind ourselves of the positives around us so that we are able to continue to build and maintain our resilience and the resilience of those under our care and influence. Please take a moment and celebrate what it is that you are grateful for today.

This may allow you space to feel:

• gratitude for opportunities,

• reconnection with your choices,

• the ability to seek help if needed,

• a reminder for confidence and self-belief, and a process to move forward.

If we work together to focus on possibilities rather than problems we will develop a consciousness about the lens through which we choose to view what is in front of us.

Keep happy and safe. Ms K Taylor, Deputy Principal

SRC students with the Honourable Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Educaiton & Minister for Early Childhood Learning.

LIBRARY NEWS Our reading challenge is in full swing and students from Year 7 to 10 have been actively engaged in their library lessons. The rules are simple: students must read 15 books (3 picture books maximum) to complete the challenge and have until the 1st of December (incl.) to do so. Students can read from both our fiction and non-fiction collection. Anyone who completes the challenge will receive a great prize. Local businesses have been very generous this year despite COVID-19 as well as our local politicians Justine Elliot (Federal MP) and Geoff Provest (State MP) who continue to sponsor our program. We are very thankful for their continued support.

We purchase the best available fiction as well as quick reads (smaller novels) and a fantastic range of graphic novels. I look forward to rewarding our students in December this year. Ms Monniot-Kerr, Teacher Librarian

FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND CARERS

WHAT IS THE NCCD?The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) takes place every year.

The NCCD is a collection that counts:

• the number of school students receiving anadjustment or ‘help’ due to disability

• the level of adjustment they are receiving toaccess education on the same basis as otherstudents.

Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Schools provide this information to education authorities.

Go to What is a reasonable adjustment? below to learn about adjustments.

WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?All schools in Australia must collect information about students with disability.

The NCCD:

• ensures that the information collected istransparent, consistent and reliable

• provides better information that improvesunderstanding of students with disability

• allows parents, guardians, carers, teachers, principals, education authorities and governmentto better support students with disability.

Student with disability loadingFunding from the Australian Government for students with disability is based on the NCCD through the student with disability loading.

Students with disability who are counted in the top three levels of the NCCD (extensive, substantial and supplementary) attract the loading. Funding is based on a per-student amount at each of the three levels of additional support. The amount of the loading reflects the level of support students with disability need to participate fully in school, with higher funding for those who need higher levels of support.

Australian Government recurrent school funding is provided as a lump sum to school authorities including state and territory governments, which can then distribute the funding to their member schools according to their own needs-based arrangements.

The Government expects schools and school systems to consider their funding from all sources (ie Australian Government, state and territory and private) and prioritise their spending to meet the educational needs of all of their students, including students with disability. This can include payment of professional learning for staff and building inclusive cultures in schools.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE NCCD FOR STUDENTS?The information collected by the NCCD helps teachers, principals, education authorities and governments to better support students with disability at school.

The NCCD encourages schools to review their learning and support systems and processes. This helps schools to continually improve education outcomes for all students.
