"Tendulkar still has hunger to play cricket," Chauhan said. Chauhan, who partnered with legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for a long time before retiring from the game in 1982, said Tendulkar was the best judge himself to call it a day at a right time. "Though he (Tendulkar) has not scored a century in Test matches for the last two year, but he still has a lot of poten- tial and hunger to keep playing the game", Chauhan, who was here in connection with a run organised by BJP's sports wing, said. He himself is president of BJP's national sports cell. The former Test opener said that Gautam Gambhir had chance to return to the national team. Chauhan, who played 40 Tests, said Virat Kohli had tremendous potential as India's future cap- tain. "He (Kohli) proved himself as a good captain in the recent West Indies tri-series which India won and also at Zimbabwe tour," the cricketer-turned BJP leader said. "His (Kohli) aggres- sive attitude and cool head even in trying times makes him a fit candidate to lead Team India in future," Chauhan said. About cricket in Bihar, Chauhan said that the state had produced some good crickters like Saba Karim, Amikar Dayal and Avinash Kumar. He paid a visit to cricket academy run by Dayal at St Xaviers school and encouraged youngsters. He expressed displeasure over fight between different cricketing bodies in the state for affiliation to the BCCI. Chauhan urged them to come on one plat- form under former cricketer and BJP MP Kirti Azad. PTI Jaipur, Sep 11: Sachin Tendulkar's 200th Test is going to be special for more reasons than one. Amid the debate on whether the Little Master should play the milestone match at home or not, visitors West Indies are planning a 'surprise' for Sachin. It's Saqlain Mushtaq's doosra! Former Pakistan off- spinner Saqlain is training the Caribbean spinners on mastering the art of the doosra ahead of the India tour. Saqlain's variety of spin had proved to be Tendulkar's Achilles heel throughout his career. And now, through a special camp held at the High Performance Centre in Barba- dos, the spinners for the likes of Devendra Bishoo, Shane Shillingford, Ashley Nash are learning trade secrets from Saqlain to tackle the Little Master in his milestone match. Ask Saqlain about his new assignment and he smiles. "Touring India is always a challenge for any team and now that Sachin will be play- ing his 200th Test, the pressure will be more on the bowlers. At the moment, I'm assessing our spinners keeping all these factors in mind," Saqlain told TOI from Barbados. The last time West Indies travelled to India a couple of years back, lack of quality spinners proved costly for Darren Sammy's men and taking lessons from that. "For any bowler playing at the international level, it's important to be physically and mentally strong. A bats- man like Sachin will test your character and you can't just give up," Saqlain felt. So what's his advice for the Sunil Narines and Shil- lingfords? "Read his body lan- guage and have patience. You need to judge him well and while bowling to Sachin, you will have to allow him to go for shots and then you need to counter back. That's all I will be sharing with these spin- ners," Saqlain elaborated. Saqlain feels, Sachin's eyesight makes the difference. "Aap jo bhi gend dalo, who zaroor pakad lega (Whatever you bow, he is sure to read you correctly)," Saqlain laughed. And as Saqlain talks about Sachin, he gets nostalgic, going back to the famous Chennai Test in 1999 which Pakistan won despite Tendulkar's magnificent century. "Woh bahot hi tough match tha. He started off brilliantly and was going great guns. I tried reading his body language and that helped. I could understand that he was planning to come at me hard and there it was, a doosra to send him packing," Saqlain reminisced. By his own admission, Sachin was the most dangerous bats- man to bowl at, but off the field Saqlain still considers Sachin a 'dear friend'. But then, Saqlain, who will join Bangladesh team next month as spin coach, won't be travelling with the West Indies team for his 'old friend's' milestone match. YOUNIS KHAN PASSES 7,000 TEST RUNS: Younis, who scored an unbeaten double century in the first Test to set up Pakistan's 221-run victory, became the fourth Pakistan batsman to pass 7,000 runs in Tests. Afghanistan dash India’s hat-trick hopes, win SAFF title Kathmandu, Sep 11: India's bid to win a hat-trick of SAFF Football Championship titles went up in smoke on Wednesday as they lost 0-2 to Afghanistan in the final. The Afghans, who won their maiden SAFF Trophy exacted a sweet revenge for their humiliating 0-4 loss against the same opponents in New Delhi two years back. The winners were helped by strikes from Mustafa Azadzoy (8th minute) and Sanjar Ahmadi (63rd minute). India coach Wim Koevermans's gamble of leaving out regular captain Sunil Chhetri from the starting XI didn't exactly pay off although the efforts from Robin Singh and Jeje Lalpeklhua were praiseworthy. It was their inexperience on big occasion that cost India dearly as they fumbled repeatedly on the opposi- tion's attacking third. For Afghanistan, it was a moment they had waited for two years having found the defeat in Delhi a hard to swal- low. A fleet of Afghan Parliamentarians arrived in the afternoon to cheer their team and one of them even went onto the extent of announcing an apartment and $25,000 each for the whole squad if they happen to win the match. Whether the announcement egged them is hard to know but they certainly played to their plan as they were able to keep the Indian team at bay despite a wave of attacks. Both the strikes came off counter-attacks and after each goal, the 'Men In Red' tightened their defence. Just like their semi-final match, Afghanistan got the much-needed goal as early as the eighth minute when right wing back Mustafa Hadid beat opposi- tion left-back Syed Rahim Nabi as he got a lot of open space down wide right to enter the penalty box and passed it on to Belal Arezo. Belal managed to hood- wink stopper back Arnab Mondal with a pass for Mustafa Azadzoy to slot it past Subrata Paul. India played better after conceding the goal as there were a flurry of attacks with some fine build-ups with assistance from Mehtab Hossain in the central midfield and Farncisco Fer- nandes down right. Chhetri finally came in the 60th minute and almost immediately scored as he played a one-two with Francisco before his feeble shot was saved by the goalie. However, in the counter, Afghans struck a telling blow scoring the second goal in the 63rd minute when Belal raced past Arnab and Gourmangi with only Paul to beat. His placement was well intercepted by Paul but Sanjar Ahmadi lobbed it and the goalkeeper failed in his bid to tip it over cross-bar. Down 0-2, Chhetri tried a long ranger in the 65th minute which hit the horizon- tal, but the Indian team seemed to fizzle out with the passage of time. PTI ZIMBABWE V PAKISTAN- DAY 2 YOUNIS, MISBAH STABILISE PAKISTAN Harare, Sep 11: Younis Khan carried on from where he left off in the first Test as he played another solid innings for Pakistan on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday. Younis followed up a match-winning double century in the first Test with an unbeat- en 52 as Pakistan reached 163 for three at the close of play in reply to Zimbabwe's first innings total of 294. When he reached 50 for the 49th time in Test cricket Younis became the fourth Pakistan batsman to reach 7000 runs in Tests. Batsmen of both sides played cautiously on a slow pitch. Only five wickets fell in the day, while 222 runs were scored. As in the first Test, Younis batted patiently against steady bowling. With several prominent cracks in the pitch he stretched well forward to most deliveries, with bat and pad close together to combat any unpredictable bounce. Younis and fellow veteran Misbah-ul-Haq will resume on Thursday, after putting on 67 for the fourth wicket. They came together soon after tea when opening bats- man Khurram Manzoor was run out for 51. Younis faced 127 balls and hit six fours, while Misbah made 27 not out off 88 deliver- ies. Manzoor, who was recalled for the Zimbabwe series after more than three years out of the Test team, survived confident appeals for a catch behind and leg before wicket early in his innings. He showed good timing as he hit nine fours in reaching his fourth Test half-century off 119 balls, but his innings came to an end when he played the ball to leg and set off for a run. He was sent back by Younis and could not beat Elton Chigumbura's throw to wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami. Pakistan endured a frustrating morning as their bowlers struggled to dislodge the Zimbabwe tail. Junaid Khan took his fourth wicket of the innings when Prosper Utseya hooked a short ball to deep backward square leg after making a stubborn 22 off 82 balls. Junaid finished the innings with four for 67. Tendai Chatara and Brian Vitori put on 46 for the last wicket before left-arm spin- ner Abdur Rehman ended Zimbabwe's resistance when he trapped Chatara leg before wicket for 21. Rehman took three for 47. Manzoor and Mohammad Hafeez put on 29 for Pakistan's first wicket before Hafeez was caught at first slip off left-arm opening bowler Vitori for 22 - his highest score in five Test matches in 2013. Azhar Ali made seven before he was leg before to Tinashe Panyangara. India refuses visa to Pak team for Twenty20 tournament New Delhi, Sep 11: India has refused visa to Pakistani team, Faisalabad Wolves, to participate in Champions League Twenty20 tourna- ment scheduled to begin from September 17 against the backdrop of current tensions between the two countries. The government's decision not to give visas to the Paki- stani team to participate in the limited over cricket tour- nament comes in the backdrop of recent ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LOC) creating tension between the two countries. "As a matter of abundance precaution and caution in terms of safety and security, the government did not give green signal for the cricket team's visit," government sources said. The Faisalabad team, led by national team skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, was invited to play in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League T20 in India, starting on Septem- ber 17. The Faisalabad team's participation in the CLT20 was confirmed until the LoC issues arose and that led to tensions between the two countries. Last year, the BCCI had invited Pakistan to send its domestic T20 champions -- Sialkot Stallions -- for the Champions League which was held in South Africa. The Sialkot Stallions, however, failed to qualify for the main round. This year Faisalabad Wolves, by virtue of emerging as the national T20 champions, had earned the honour of representing Pakistan in the Champions League.Last month, India had not granted visa to a Pakistani religious group to attend Urs here and sug- gested that they defer their visit in view of their safety and security. PTI Messi spot-on as Argentina reach World Cup London, Sep 11: Lionel Messi scored twice as Argen- tina booked their place at the World Cup with a 5-2 thrash- ing of Paraguay on Tuesday. Argentina captain Messi struck a penalty in each half as the South American giants made sure of their place at next year's finals in Brazil in emphatic fashion. The Argentines -- miss- ing four of their first-choice XI through suspension -- had only needed a point in the Paraguayan capital to be certain of qualification. But Alejandro Sabella's side demonstrated why they are likely to be regarded as one of the teams to beat in Brazil by tearing into the home team from the whistle. Messi fired them ahead from the penalty spot on 12 minutes only for Paraguay to equalise through Jose Nunez six minutes later. Manchester City strik- er Sergio Aguero restored Argentina's lead on 32 min- utes, shrugging off two mark- ers before rifling past Roberto Fernandez to make it 2-1. Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria extended Argentina's lead soon after half-time, sweeping forward on a lightning-fast counter attack and coolly steering a low shot beyond Fernandez on 50 minutes. Argentina earned a second penalty moments later when Salustiano Candia was harshly adjudged to have fouled Messi in the area. Messi duly dusted him- self down and blasted in his second goal of the night to make it 4-1. Paraguay veteran Roque Santa Cruz struck a late consolation goal for the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists but Maxi Rodriguez hit back for Argentina in the dying minutes to make it 5-2. Elsewhere Tuesday, second place Colombia missed their chance to clinch qualification after crashing 2-0 to Uruguay in Montevideo.Late Uruguay- an goals from Paris St Ger- main striker Edinson Cavani and Cristian Stuani handed the two-time World Cup winners a dramatic win at the Centenario Stadium as Colombia's celebra- tions were put on ice. The Colombians had needed only a point to be sure of clinching their first World Cup qualification since 1998 and for long periods looked more than capable of claiming the result they needed. AFP Bale not fit enough to play full match, says Coleman Madrid, Sep 11: Real Madrid's record sign- ing Gareth Bale is not fit enough to last a full match and it would be "dangerous" to make him play 90 minutes if he debuts in Saturday's La Liga match at Villarreal, according to Wales coach Chris Coleman. Bale, who became the world's most expensive player when he joined Real for 100 million euros ($133 million) at the start of the month, played the final half an hour of Wales's 3-0 World Cup qualification defeat to Serbia on Tues- day, his first competitive action since July. "We have looked at him in these 10 days and he is nowhere near ready for 90 minutes even if Spanish football is slower," Cole- man was quoted as saying on the FIFA website (www. fifa.com) on Wednesday. "If he starts Saturday, he will not finish the game. I would be amazed if he does," he added. "He may get 45 minutes, I don't know, but he will feel better in himself after 30 minutes here. "But he has only had four training sessions in two months which is dan- gerous." REUTERS Gower urges Broad to learn from Warner London, Sep 11: Former England captain David Gower believes Stuart Broad can win over fans in Aus- tralia during the upcoming Ashes series if he follows the lead of David Warner. Broad is set to become the England player, above all others, Australian fans love to hate following his controversial decision not to walk in the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge this season. England won that Test by just 14 runs and went on to take the series 3-0, with Broad producing a match-winning return of six for 50 in their 74-run fourth Test victory in Durham last month. But Broad's decision to stand his ground on his Not- tinghamshire home ground still rankled with Australia coach Darren Lehmann, even though Australians have traditionally refrained from walking and instead waited for the umpire's decision. Former Test batsman Lehmann was fined by the International Cricket Coun- cil after calling on Austra- lian fans to "get stuck into" Broad in the return series, adding he hoped the fast- medium bowler "cries and goes home". Gower though suggested the best way for Broad to defuse any ill-feeling was to respond with a smile, much as Warner did when England fans made him their panto- mime villain following his bar-room attack on Joe Root. "It will be interesting to see how it does work," Gower said Tuesday. "He (Broad) might have a tough time to start with. Not everyone will be as crass as to just pick up on those words the other day and make life hard for him all the time. "He is a good player and a tough individual but the best thing for him to do would be to take a leaf out of David Warner's book and just play with it. "If you go down there and you are expecting to cop a bit, and whether or not Lehmann said what he said, they would cop it anyway because it is the nature of the beast. "But if you can run with it and smile with it to win people over and perform well it would sort out any situation." Gower, one of the most stylish batsmen of his gen- eration, was speaking from experience, having scored five of his 18 Test hundreds in Australia. "I did well down there and that is the key," he said. "If you do well they will respect you. I loved playing in Aus- tralia because they are good crowds," the 56-year-old left- hander recalled. "The initial thing is that Australian crowds want Australia to win as English crowds want England to win and there are always the ele- ments within those respec- tive crowds that may take it too far. "But the great bulk of the cricket-loving public in both countries appreciate skill," Gower insisted. "When you go down to Australia they don't want you to win but if you perform well and do it with a certain style they will understand that and appreciate that. "The best way to cope with the feeling that you might be in hostile territory is to play well and then you will find very quickly there are some very good people down there that really understand the game and they will applaud it." West Indies add Saqlain twist to Tendulkar's milestone

‘Sachin still has hunger for cricket’Patna, Sep 11: Amid specula-tions on retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, former Test cricketer Chetan Chauhan on Wednesday said the veteran batsman still had hunger for runs and was the best judge when to call it a day.

"Tendulkar still has hunger to play cricket," Chauhan said.

Chauhan, who partnered with legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for a long time before retiring from the game in 1982, said Tendulkar was the best judge himself to call it a day at a right time.

"Though he (Tendulkar) has not scored a century in Test matches for the last two year,

but he still has a lot of poten-tial and hunger to keep playing the game", Chauhan, who was here in connection with a run organised by BJP's sports wing, said. He himself is president of BJP's national sports cell.

The former Test opener said that Gautam Gambhir had chance to return to the national team. Chauhan, who played 40 Tests, said Virat Kohli had tremendous potential as India's future cap-tain. "He (Kohli) proved himself as a good captain in the recent West Indies tri-series which India won and also at Zimbabwe tour," the cricketer-turned BJP leader said. "His (Kohli) aggres-

He expressed displeasure over fight between different cricketing bodies in the state for affiliation to the BCCI. Chauhan urged them to come on one plat-form under former cricketer and BJP MP Kirti Azad. PTI

Jaipur, Sep 11: Sachin Tendulkar's 200th Test is going to be special for more reasons than one. Amid the debate on whether the Little Master should play the milestone match at home or not, visitors West Indies are planning a 'surprise' for Sachin. It's Saqlain Mushtaq's doosra!

Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain is training the Caribbean spinners on mastering the art of the doosra ahead of the India tour. Harare, Sep 11: Younis Khan carried on from where he left off in the first Test as he played another solid innings for Pakistan on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

Younis followed up a match-winning double century in the first Test with an unbeat-en 52 as Pakistan reached 163 for three at the close of play in reply to Zimbabwe's first innings total of 294.

With several prominent cracks in the pitch he stretched well forward to most deliveries, with bat and

pad close together to combat any unpredictable bounce.

Younis and fellow veteran Misbah-ul-Haq will resume on Thursday, after putting on 67 for the fourth wicket. They came together soon after tea when opening bats-man Khurram Manzoor was run out for 51.

Younis faced 127 balls and hit six fours, while Misbah made 27 not out off 88 deliver-ies.

He was sent back by Younis and could not beat Elton Chigumbura's throw to wicketkeeper Richmond

Junaid Khan took his fourth wicket of the innings when Prosper Utseya hooked a short ball to deep backward square leg after making a stubborn 22 off 82 balls. Junaid finished the innings with four for 67.

Tendai Chatara and Brian Vitori put on 46 for the last wicket before left-arm spin-ner Abdur Rehman ended Zimbabwe's resistance when he trapped Chatara leg before wicket for 21.

India refuses visa to Pak team for twenty20 tournament

precaution and caution in terms of safety and security, the government did not give green signal for the cricket team's visit," government sources said. The Faisalabad team, led by national team skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, was invited to play in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League T20 in India, starting on Septem-ber 17. The Faisalabad team's participation in the CLT20 was confirmed until the LoC issues arose and that led to tensions between the two countries. Last year, the BCCI had invited Pakistan to send its

domestic T20 champions -- Sialkot Stallions -- for the Champions League which was held in South Africa. The Sialkot Stallions, however, failed to qualify for the main round. This year Faisalabad Wolves, by virtue of emerging as the national T20 champions, had earned the honour of representing Pakistan in the Champions League.Last month, India had not granted visa to a Pakistani religious group to attend Urs here and sug-gested that they defer their visit in view of their safety and security. Messi spot-on as Argentina reach

World CupLondon, Sep 11: Lionel Messi scored twice as Argen-tina booked their place at the World Cup with a 5-2 thrash-ing of Paraguay on Tuesday. Argentina captain Messi struck a penalty in each half as the South American giants made sure of their place at next year's finals in Brazil in emphatic fashion. The Argentines -- miss-ing four of their first-choice XI through suspension -- had only needed a point in the Paraguayan capital to be certain of qualification. Manchester City strik-er Sergio Aguero restored Argentina's lead on 32 min-utes, shrugging off two mark-ers before rifling past Roberto Fernandez to make it 2-1. Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria extended Argentina's lead soon after half-time, sweeping forward

on a lightning-fast counter attack and coolly steering a low shot beyond Fernandez on 50 minutes. Argentina earned a second penalty moments later when Salustiano Candia was harshly adjudged to have fouled Messi in the area. Messi duly dusted him-self down and blasted in his second goal of the night to make it 4-1. Paraguay veteran Roque Santa Cruz struck a late consolation goal for the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists but Maxi Rodriguez hit back for Argentina in the dying minutes to make it 5-2. Elsewhere Tuesday, second place Colombia missed their chance to clinch qualification after crashing 2-0 to Uruguay in Montevideo.Late Uruguay-an goals from Paris St Ger-main striker Edinson Cavani and Cristian Stuani handed the two-time World Cup winners a dramatic win at the Centenario Stadium as Colombia's celebra-tions were put on ice. The Colombians had needed only a point to be sure of clinching their first World Cup qualification since 1998 and for long periods looked more than capable of claiming the result they needed. AFP

Bale not fit enough to play full match, says ColemanMadrid, Sep 11: Real Madrid's record sign-ing Gareth Bale is not fit enough to last a full match and it would be "dangerous" to make him play 90 minutes if he debuts in Saturday's La Liga match at Villarreal, according to Wales coach Chris Coleman.

Bale, who became the world's most expensive player when he joined Real for 100 million euros ($133 million) at the start of the month, played the final half an hour of Wales's 3-0 World Cup qualification defeat to Serbia on Tues-day, his first competitive action since July.

"We have looked at him in these 10 days and he is nowhere near ready for 90 minutes even if Spanish football is slower," Cole-man was quoted as saying on the FIFA website (www.fifa.com) on Wednesday.

"If he starts Saturday, he will not finish the game. I would be amazed if he does," he added.

"He may get 45 minutes, I don't know, but he will feel better in himself after 30 minutes here.

"But he has only had four training sessions in two months which is dan-gerous." ReuTeRs

Gower urges broad to learn from Warner

London, Sep 11: Former England captain David Gower believes Stuart Broad can win over fans in Aus-tralia during the upcoming Ashes series if he follows the lead of David Warner. But Broad's decision to stand his ground on his Not-tinghamshire home ground still rankled with Australia coach Darren Lehmann, even though Australians have traditionally refrained from walking and instead waited for the umpire's decision. Former Test batsman Lehmann was fined by the International Cricket Coun-cil after calling on Austra-lian fans to "get stuck into" Broad in the return series, adding he hoped the fast-medium bowler "cries and goes home". Gower though suggested the best way for Broad to defuse any ill-feeling was to respond with a smile, much as Warner did when England fans made him their panto-mime villain following his bar-room attack on Joe Root. "It will be interesting to see how it does work," Gower said Tuesday. "He (Broad) might have a tough time to start with. Not everyone will be as crass as to just pick up on those words the other day and make life hard for him all

the time. "He is a good player and a tough individual but the best thing for him to do would be to take a leaf out of David Warner's book and just play with it. "If you go down there and you are expecting to cop a bit, and whether or not Lehmann said what he said, they would cop it anyway because it is the nature of the beast. "But if you can run with it and smile with it to win people over and perform well it would sort out any situation." Gower, one of the most stylish batsmen of his gen-eration, was speaking from experience, having scored five of his 18 Test hundreds in Australia. "I did well down there and that is the key," he said. "If you do well they will respect you. I loved playing in Aus-tralia because they are good crowds," the 56-year-old left-hander recalled. "The initial thing is that Australian crowds want Australia to win as English crowds want England to win and there are always the ele-ments within those respec-tive crowds that may take it too far. "But the great bulk of the cricket-loving public in both countries appreciate skill," Gower insisted. "When you go down to Australia they don't want you to win but if you perform well and do it with a certain style they will understand that and appreciate that. "The best way to cope with the feeling that you might be in hostile territory is to play well and then you will find very quickly there are some very good people down there that really understand the game and they will applaud it."
