Thursday, October 21, 2010 Correspondents The Brownsville States-Graphic page B4 By Martha H. Jones Holly Gro ve News By Shirley Tucker, Activity Director Sugar Creek Retirement Center News By Debbie Sterbinsky Stanton News By Mary W. Lewis Westside News Last Tuesday night interested Stantonians gathered at the Town Hall to hear details of a grant received by the Town of Stanton to improve our ditch situation. Randy Nelson, of Nelson Thornton Community Planners who wrote the grant, explained that the town was able to apply for the grant because of a tornado in 2008. Grants work in strange ways! A grant totaling $750,000.00 was submitted by the planners to be used for ditch work in the Town of Stanton. This is a 100% grant which means no money needs to be put with it to qualify, also called a non matching grant. We were told Brownsville and Haywood County also received a grant for this. Randy McKinnon of TLM in Jackson had examined the ditch situation in Stanton and explained the basics of the proposed work to be done. Several areas of town had been pinpointed, including the main drainage ditches which run through town and under the railroad. Depending upon CSX Railroad cooperation, work may begin on our ditches as early as next spring. A couple of sheds burned down over the weekend due to a grass fire. PLEASE do not burn! It is too dry to burn anything now. I’m currently working on cemeteries again. It’s about cold enough now for me to get out early but not actually go into the woods yet. My plate is about full this winter with cemeteries! Seems it stays that way around here, but you all know I love it. Richard is still not back at the Stanton Cannery; keep him in your thoughts and prayers. In the mean time, it is open from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Emma has been appointed by County Mayor Franklin Smith to oversee the operations for now. For any questions you may have about the Stanton Cannery, please call 731-548-6222 or the Stanton Welcome Center at 731-548-2564. Residents, and former residents of Stanton, you may mail Stanton news to me at P.O. Box 181, Stanton, TN 38069, reach me at the Stanton Welcome Center/Library at 731-548-2564, or e-mail me at: Proftster@aol. com. Please put “Stanton News” in the subject line. Together we will look at the past, look toward the future, and report current events. Want to welcome our newest resident this week, Frances Jones, who has moved to Sugar Creek from over around Somerville. We are delighted to have her and know she’ll enjoy all the folks here. She’s already telling people how good our food is - which once again is music to our ears. Nothing beats a happy, full resident! Our best wishes are with Mary Ann Halbrook, Marie Aulridge and Billie Fletcher this week as these folks are in rehab at different facilities. Our hearts and prayers are with all of you. Our thanks to Lonnie Robinson who filled in Sunday afternoon for Brother Bob Connerley bringing our devotion. I love the way these pastors all work together to make sure our residents all hear the Word each Sunday. We had a special treat Monday when David Marbury (one of our former resident’s son) and his friend, Ricky, from Batesville, MS, came to sing and visit with us. We hadn’t seen David in months so were especially glad to have him back. He’s coming again next month and bringing two guys with him this time. Any one like to hear them, call for date and time. Mary Alice White, our rag-time pianist from Jackson, was here Thursday. We do great sing-alongs with her and the residents absolutely love it. She knows all the “old” songs like, “Near You”, “Stardust”, “Deep Purple”, “Red Sales in the Sunset,” etc. I am always amazed at how many folks remember the words to all these old songs. Jean Black knows them all at the ripe age of 92. She is something else! The powers that be decided Diane and I needed a little education this week and had us go to Columbia to one of their facilities there for some meetings. After we had a tour of the facility which was two stories high with a separate building for the Alzheimer residents, we had a wonderful lunch and then went into separate meetings. Diane went to the Administrator’s meeting and I went to the Activity Director’s meeting. I’m sure Diane’s meeting was probably boring with all that “business” talk, but ours was fun. Can you imagine about 20 women sharing “fun” ideas? Well, I don’t know I could say they were all “fun”, but they were ideas. You know what will work at some facilities just won’t quite get it at another. When one suggested a “wet tee shirt contest” I knew I’d never get away with that. Brother Connerley, Brother Sweeney, Lonnie Robinson, Dr. Mike Moore, Pastor Phil Cook, etc. would all be looking for the tar and feathers before I could turn around good. It didn’t turn out to be what we all immediately think of, but it sounded too close for comfort. I scratched that idea in a hurry. Our rocking chairs have been getting some exercise since the weather has been so beautiful. Come rock awhile with our residents. They are missing you. Westside will have Friends and Family Day Sunday, October 24, with Brother Larry Sweeney bringing the message. Morning services are: Bible Class 9:30 a.m., preaching at 10:30 a.m. and night service will be at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited and to the meal following the sermon. Members Scott and Candy Chrisman will be included as we bid them Godspeed as they relocate to Memphis and worship at Park Avenue Church of Christ. The Chrismans were responsible for our weekly bulletin, called “Rainbows”, but Jason and Kristina Woods have stepped up to do so now. We appreciate both families for taking care of this, and those who have done so in past years. Brother Larry and Emily Sweeney have guests this week from New York, his father, Don Sweeney, of Jamestown, and his brother, Randy, and his wife, Peggy, of Lakewood. Our high school math teacher, soon to be nurse in training in 2011, Sara Massey, ran 26 miles in a marathon held in Midland, Texas. Her husband, Brian Massey, also teaches. We welcome Alyssa Woods from Gibson County now making her home here with her dad, Jason Woods, and his family. Diane Lee spent several days last week assisting her sister, Shirley Cook, of Tipton County, as she underwent eye surgery at Methodist North Hospital. Margaret Aiken will be accompanied by her cousin from Sardis, Annie Austin, for surgery on her other eye Thursday in Jackson. Our friend, Glen McKinney, will have eye surgery in Jackson shortly. Hugh Teems of Rome, Ga. father of Ron Teems, has moved to Brownsville residing with Ron, Stephanie, and family on Joey Street. We are enjoying him at Westside. It was announced in error at services that Diane Hart was in a hospital. We already knew her as one of our members residing at Crestview (who is roommate of Bobbye Nell Thomas), but upon checking with son, Ronnie of Burger Basket Restaurant, we found it not to be his mother. Whoever she is, we are sorry. Paul and I visited his sister-in-law, Olene Abel, widow of Reuben Abel, in Jackson Saturday at her new residence. Her children, Elaine, of Navarre, Florida and Phillip, of Denver, CO who attended school here, are visiting her this week. Reuben’s two brothers survive, Raymond of Gibson, and Reiders of Missouri, husband of Melanie Black. Brother Maltimore Bond of Jefferson Street Church of Christ spent several days in a Memphis hospital when he had his pacemaker replaced, according to sister Joyce Fanin and their sister, Countess, of Nashville, visiting here. Margaret Covington, mother of Mark and others, is battling cancer. Her birthday was October 14. Why not shower her with cards? Also Minnie Bell King October 31, at Crestview Healthcare? Others having birthdays this month are: Donna Heron 02, Janelle Glasshof 03, Shermy Neal 04, Carolyn Freeman 05, Chrissy Delaney 06, Dana Williams 07, Max Brown 10, (moved Jackson), Peggy Hooper 11, Nancy Taylor 12, Eleanor Edwards 13, Jim Powell 15, Caleb Glidewell 18, Zac Chrisman 19, Alice Powell 21, Emily Sweeney 25, Bill Jenkins 26, and Christopher Rich 30. Happy Anniversary to Billy and Bobbie Connally October 18! Bro. Robert Swain, of Vilonia, AR, gave a report on his mission work especially for Spanish speaking people Sunday night. Westside lends support to this effort in Costa Rico and several other locations. His effort is called Gospel Opportunities. By Betty Scott Bethel - Belle Eagle News Brownsville Fall Fest was held last Saturday and this year the weather was perfect. This is our seventh year for this event and the attendance was great! Everyone enjoyed plenty of good food and entertainment. Many are taking advantage of the beautiful weather traveling. Bob and Carolyn Kendrick spent a few days at Hilton Head, NC. Phillip and Shirley Greenway took the back roads to Gatlinburg and enjoyed stopping at out-of-the-way spots. Kenny Kendrick went on a hunting trip to Colorado. Bobby and Trisha Kendrick from Kingsport visited Bill and Jane Kendrick last week and attended church services at Bethel Sunday morning. Everyone enjoyed the Climer reunion at Bethel Community Center. Plenty of food and seeing kinfolks that you have not seen in a long time is what a gathering like this is all about. Jack Moses had a dove shoot with barbecue lunch for the community last Saturday. His dad, Buddy Moses, has built a new shop in Stockdom Bottom and will be hunting more often. Debbie Greenway’s dad, Richard Mason, had kidney surgery at Vanderbilt last week and is home now recuperating. Emily Herron is recuperating from shoulder surgery. Thought for the week: Remember to say “Thank You” often to the trash pickup person, the paper carrier, and all others that make our life easier. The messages were brought by Brother Ralph Brown Sunday morning and Brother Greg Baker Sunday night in the absence of our pastor who is away holding a revival. The message was taken from Jeremiah 2, where God said, “My people have two evils against them. The heavens are shocked at such a thing and shrink back in horror and dismay. It is an evil and bitter thing to forsake the Lord, your God.” Many in America are going down a dead end street. Our country was built on Judeo-Christian values, but many have departed from them and are going their own way. There is little respect for God. Many worship the god of money, their job, electronics (cell phones, TV, computers and such), the god of pleasure and self (it’s all about me). God have mercy on us. Happy birthday to Mandy Hayes, Bob Alexander, Ashtan Perry, Juanita Haynes, Glen Claburn, Bobby Lovelace and Rebecca Hart. We express our heartfelt sympathy to Cindy Alexander and her family in the death of her mother, Mrs. Ailene Knott. Billy and Peggy Castellaw and their family cooked a stew and served it up to relatives and friends last Saturday. Dewey and Alan Jones enjoyed themselves. I wish I could have gone, but had too many things to get done. We were happy to have our granddaughter, Julie Hopkins, and her little daughter, Hayden, have breakfast with us Friday, and to have another granddaughter, Tiffanie Rosales, and her husband, Luis, to visit with us Friday night. The “Down Memory Lane” memories’ book is in the process of being compiled. We would love to have your memories, but it has to be in by October 24. That is the close out date. Brother Ralph Brown and those assisting him finished the 8-mile radius visitation for the church last Saturday. They visited many homes and were well received by everyone. The church would like to tell all of those doing the visiting and to those preparing the food and serving the visitors, a hearty “Thank you!” They worked so hard six Saturdays to accomplish the task. Those on the sick list who need our prayers are: Glenn White, who underwent heart surgery last week, Ruth Taylor, Mae Simpson, Liz Kemper, Jean Climer, Jessie and Marie White, and Jean Mann. Others to include are Elsie Lewis, Neil Herbert, Melvin Holcomb, Ted Mann, Fletcher Lewis, Janie Hight and Carolyn Covington. Also include Mary Ann Halbrook and little Cason Scott. Calbe McLean visited with Jay Hopper last Saturday, who is home from college for the fall break. Caleb and his parents, Terrill and Judy McLean and their family were members of Holly Grove untl they moved. Caleb finished college this year. Joshua Mangrum also visited with Ricky and Kathy Hopper and family recently. He has enlisted in the army. Brother Ralph and Elaine Brown took their granddaughter, Christine Brown to look at three colleges, MTSU, UT Martin and the College of the Ozarks. Her choice seems to be MTSU. The College of the Ozarks is near Brandon, so they enjoyed a few shows there before returning home. www.justapinch.com got recipes? want coupons?
