Wisdom comes with age – if we can remember what we’re talking about. We become role models for the younger generations if they can see past our uncool clothes. We become respected, admired members of society – or at least we think we are and nobody better tell us any different because we really don’t care what the rest of the world thinks any more. We quit obsessing over such things several years ago. To top it all off we get all those “senior” discounts. How much better can life get? You didn’t know how much fun it would be to get old, did you? And (I know you don’t start a sentence with “and”, but we don’t care about that either) as they say just before we get dessert, the best is yet to come – it’s called HEAVEN. So – remember to look on the bright side of aging – if you’re a Christian the best is yet to come! Nancy Goodwin had a great fruit bingo game this past week. Grace Mulligan, Jottye Newman, Pauline Welch, Barbara McGary, Frances Blalock, Alystine Hare, Arline Boisvert, Irlene Clement, Martha Jane Williams and Frances Jones all had a grand time. We had a nice surprise when a lovely little six year old came to see us and brought a box of stuffed animals to all go in the Christmas shoeboxes. Her name is Kendall Taylor and she goes to Bells Elementary School and wanted to have a part in the shoe box ministry. Thank you, Kendall, for thinking of others and having such a sharing spirit. Jimmy, Linda, Eric and Emily Leath all came to have lunch with their mother and grandmother this past week. She was so glad to have each of them. Alystine Hare had several folks visit this week. Her brother-in- law and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Hare, came from Jonesboro, Arkansas to visit. They also took her by her house and out to lunch. Then Debbie and David Travis came from Paris and took her out to eat again. They were on their way to Memphis to see their son, Jay, who is a student at Rhodes. Alystine thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of them. For Edible Art this week we made cake balls. My grandchildren in Houston were making them a few months ago, but they were also on the front cover of Family Circle last month. Seems like a waste of a perfectly good cake to me because you take a 9 x 13 cake and crumble it completely up and then mix a can of frosting into the crumbles and roll it into little balls (size of a meatball). Set the plate of balls in the refrigerator about 30 minutes – when they’re cold roll them in melted chocolate and crushed pecans. Set back in fridge until ready to eat. Now you have a treat – pure sugar! If you’re diabetic they’ll put you into an instant coma. Seriously, they’re good, but NOT for diabetics. Come see us when you can. “Are you living your life for a higher purpose?” was the subject of the message Sunday. We must live a life of direction and focus to glorify God, and as the Apostle Paul said, “Press toward the mark of the high calling of God.” Some people learn from the mistakes of others. Are we the others? The Bible tells us to put away anything in the past that God has forgiven, anything that will hinder us in our walk with Him. The resent is a gift of God, that’s the reason we call it the present, and look to the future. We are to soar with purpose for we are created to do great things as we follow Him. God may use us as the determining factor where someone spends eternity. Christy Fain and Carey Lipford, daughters of our pastor and wife Nancy, sang the special music. Carey and her family and their other daughter, Rachel, and her family attended church at Holly Grove Sunday. The church honored Brother Fred Campbell with a plaque for his 10-year anniversary of service at Holly Grove Church. Following church services, the members surprised the pastor with a pretty grey, KIA Spectra. Brother Ralph Brown presented the keys to him and everyone followed he and Nancy outside to see it. Betty Barden decorated it with a large red bow. Happy birthday to Phil Emison, Sara Long, Jason Burk, Vada Lewis, Lynn Kerr, Ricky Hopper, Autumn Watkins and Kimberly Scott. Happy anniversary to Keith and Dianne Warren. We express sympathy to Alma Herbert, Bill and Carol and their families in the death of our loved one, Neil Herbert. I miss him already. Thanks to everyone who made it easier for us to face this time in our lives. Brother Wayne Foropoulos visited with Dewey and Martha Jones Friday night. We also express sympathy to Andy Norris in the death of his mother, Mrs. Ann McBride. I recently heard a woman make this statement, “No one leaves this earth alive.” I have news for her. Everyone leaves this earth alive. The Bibles tells us for a Christian to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Those who have trusted in Jesus while on earth will close their eyes in death and open them in heaven. Like a butterfly that leaves the worm existence, the child of God casts aside the body that has caused so much pain and troubles in this life and enters the heavenly realm. Those on the sick list this week who need our prayers are Mae Simpson, Liz Kemper, Elsie Lewis, Margaret Ann Fletcher, Janie Hight, Carolyn Covington and Fletcher Lewis. Others to include are Ruth Taylor, Belinda Long, Earnestine Crutchfield, Perry Watridge, Pat Hart, Amanda Vales, Sue Spencer, Alysen Perry and Danny Murphy. A birthday celebration was given for little Jensen Bolinger to celebrate is first birthday last Saturday afternoon. His parents are Ryan and Heather Jones Bolinger. It was held at the home of Alan and Debbie Jones. Others attending were Heath and Julie Hopkins and Hayden, Tiffanie Rosales, Brent and Jessica Byrd, Lorie Jones, and Great granddad Dewey (Pop) Jones. I was unable to attend. Next Sunday, November 14, we will be combining Loyalty Day and celebrating the 125th anniversary of Holly Grove Church, Brother David Peace, pastor of Mt. Miriah Baptist Church in Whiteville will bring the morning message and the Barnetts will be singing. Following the services, we will all gather in the family life center for a wonderful buffet meal together. You are invited to join us for this special time at Holly Grove. Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. and worship service at 11 a.m. The Freed-Hardeman Associates met in the Fellowship Room Tuesday, November 2, at 6:30 pm. Local members are Emily Sweeney, Dana Williams, Nell Fox, Ann Jackson, and Ruth Glidewell. This chapter is combined with Crockett County and it will meet in December with Mrs. Ray (Nieva) Nanney in Bells. It is very good to be organized again as probably in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s when Brother Bob and Ann Spann were serving here, a large number of ladies were very involved in supporting Freed-Hardeman, rated as a college before attaining university status since. Some of us founding members are still here and held office. Congratulations to those now active! Leonard Pierce, husband of Nancy Pierce and brother to Janice Naylor and Nell Fox underwent hip surgery in Regional of Jackson. Yevonne Mathias had knee replacement there also. C.L. Shelton of Ripley, friend of the Lewis’, who was in Covington Manor, now is in St. Francis Hospital, Bartlett, due to contracting pneumonia. He has several relatives here in the city. Remember these in prayer along with Margaret Covington, Pearl Gordon, and all our shut-ins. We miss each and all. Margaret Aiken may have back surgery and Carolyn has a shoulder injury. Martha Coburn Williams celebrated her birthday November 4, and “oldtimer” Jimmy Naylor had one November 3. Congratulations to Ronnie and Frances Belew who recently celebrated 30 years of marriage. Presently another good work, Lads to Leaders, met Sunday night after services to register for the activities each teacher will participate in for 2011. Sympathy is extended to the families of O’Neil Herbert, Jeff Mulherin, and others including Helen Bond Williams who was living in Georgia, formerly of Jefferson Street Church of Christ and mother of Judy Delk. Sunday was such a beautiful day. Taylor Dedmon sang “ Come To Jesus” for our special music. He is such a talented young man and he is so faithful to the Lord. It is always special to have Taylor share his talent with us. Saturday, November 6, fifteen Young At Heart seniors enjoyed a meal and fellowship at Kappis steakhouse in Humboldt. They reported a great time, and thanks to Betty Johnson for keeping this group’s schedule busy. Alicia and I attended an art show and sale on Saturday featuring the beautiful work of Randle Smith Bell, a Brownsville girl who now resides in Mt Juliet. Her lovely work was displayed throughout the charming home of Sandra and Fred Silverstein. If you are looking for some beautiful, artsy and whimsical paintings, Randle’s work will amaze you. Happy Birthday to my beautiful daughter-in- law, Leah Barden, who celebrated her birthday last Sunday. Happy Birthday wishes also go out to Brother Greg Jordan, Roger Byrd, Caleb Kendrick, Raymond Russell, Makayla Young and Marcia Killen. Happy Anniversary to Johnny and Connie Hendrix and Ernest and Ann Lytle. Please remember the families of Mr. Oneal Herbert and Jeff Mulherin. On our prayer list are Martha Crutcher, Hal Rodgers, Carolyn and Jimmy Danley, Jerry Baggett, Carol Wilson, Sue Spencer and Steve White. Our Bible verse for this week is Psalm 24:1, which states “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein.” Have a blessed week. There has been a special called Neighborhood Watch meeting tonight for those of you who can attend. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. We need as many people as possible to attend this meeting to update you on the latest updates around town. Remember, this is for all of Stanton and surrounding areas. We need your eyes to help watch for undesirable activity. Please join us as we attempt to keep our town safe. You may have noticed more activity around Stanton lately, more daytime meetings etc. Most of these meetings pertain to the Solar Farm and the upcoming construction to begin soon. We expect several of these in the near future, but they are merely working and planning meetings and not for the public. We had been given some dates within the next couple of weeks for ground breaking, but after speaking with proper authorities of the firm involved, we found out those dates have not been formerly scheduled as of yet. Hopefully I’ll know for sure in time to let you know. Regardless, things are beginning to happen, so don’t be surprised when you see activity around here. I’ve been told that from October until May during the year you need to call the Brownsville Fire Department before burning anything. Well the new grandbaby is officially here! Our sixth bundle of joy arrived last Tuesday after two days of labor. For those of you on Facebook, pictures have been posted! I’ve decided labor is just as hard on the grandma, particularly when it’s your daughter. I can’t stand to see my baby girl hurt, especially when I know what she’s going through! The count is officially three boys and three girls now. I’ll have more for you next week! Residents, and former residents of Stanton, you may mail Stanton news to me at P.O. Box 181, Stanton, TN 38069, reach me at the Stanton Welcome Center/ Library at 731-548-2564 (please leave your name and phone number so I may return your call for details), or e-mail me at: [email protected]. Please put “Stanton News” in the subject line. The deadline for submission is Friday, for inclusion in the following week’s column. Together we will look at the past, look toward the future, and report current events.
