October 2016 Edition Mrs. Veda A. McCoy, Principal
Mrs. Jameka Hughes, Asst. Principal
From the Principal’s Pen…
Greetings, Avalon Parents and Families!
Thank you for your continued support of our great school. It was wonderful to see so many turn out for
our first PTO Meeting and the Pajama Read-In Night. Literacy is very important, and the students were
all so excited to read and/or be read to. I was delighted when one of our 1st graders read the entire story
of “Frosty the Snowman” to me, and to watch her mother beam with pride and cheer afterwards! This
kind of “village participation” is what it’s all about. Let’s continue to partner together to make our school
and students soar to higher heights!
October is Anti-Bullying Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. Wednesday, October 19, is Unity Day, and students may wear orange shirts (with
uniform bottoms and shoes) to support kindness, acceptance and inclusion. As always, my door remains
open to listen to and address any concerns that you may have. Please feel free to contact the school or
send me an email at [email protected].
The information in our Parent Newsletter is intended to keep you informed of what is happening at the
school and aware of importing upcoming dates and events. If you think of any other information that
should be included or that might be helpful, please let me know.
Thank you!
Mrs. McCoy
Join PGCPS in Our Effort to Stop Bullying! Bullying, harassment and intimidation have no place in
Prince George’s County Public Schools. Whether it happens in the hallways or online, such behavior can
create hostile learning environments that interfere with students’ academic performance, and emotional and
physical well-being. Harassment is motivated by real or perceived characteristics, such as race/ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, or socioeconomic status. Bullying behavior is threatening, intimidating and occurs repeatedly over time with the
intent to cause harm.
