百 千 萬 劫 難 遭 遇

BAI QIAN WAN JIE NAN ZAO YUIs difficult to encounter in thousands of millions of kalpas.

我 今 見 聞 得 受 持

WO JIN JIAN WEN DE SHOU CHII now see and hear, have attained, received and uphold it,

願 解 如 來 真 實 義

YUAN JIE RU LAI ZHEN SHI YIAnd vow to understand the Tathagatas true and actual meaning.

妙 法 蓮 華 經 觀 世 音 菩 薩 普 門 品MIAO FA LIAN HUA JING GUAN SHI YIN PU SA PU MEN PIN

The Lotus Sutra of The Gateway of the Bodhisattva, He Who Observes the Sounds of the World

爾時,無盡意菩薩,即從座起,偏袒右肩,合掌向佛,而作是言:「世尊!觀世

音菩薩,以何因緣名觀世音?」

ER SHI, WU JIN YI PU SA, JI CONG ZUO JI, PIAN DAN YOU JIAN, HE ZHANG XIANG FO, ER ZUO SHI YAN: ‘SHI ZUN! GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, YI HE YIN YUAN MING GUAN SHI YIN?’At that time the Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind (Aksayamati) straightway rose from his seat and, baring his

right shoulder and facing the Buddha with palms joined, said: "O World-Honored One! For what reason is the

Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World (Avalokitesvara) called Observer of the Sounds of the

World?"

佛告無盡意菩薩:「善男子!若有無量百千萬億眾生,受諸苦惱,聞是觀世音菩

薩,一心稱名,觀世音菩薩,即時觀其音聲,皆得解脫。

FO GAO WU JIN YI PU SA: ‘ SHAN NAN ZHI! RUO YOU WU LIANG BIA QIAN WAN YI ZHONG SHENG, SHOU ZHU KU NAO, WEN SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, YIN XIN CHENG MING, GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, JI SHI GUAN QI YIN SHEN, JIE DE JIE TUO.The Buddha declared to the Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind, "Good man, if incalculable hundreds of thousands

of myriads of millions of living beings, suffering pain and torment, hear of this Bodhisattva He Who Observes

the Sounds of the World and single-mindedly call upon his name, the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds

of the World shall straightway heed their voices, and all shall gain deliverance.

「若有持是觀世音菩薩名者,設入大火,火不能燒,

‘RUO YOU CHI SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING ZHE, SHE RU DA HUO, HUO BU NENG SHAO, "If there is one who keeps the name of this Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, even if he should fall into a great fire, the fire would be unable to burn him,

由是菩薩威神力故。若為大水所漂,稱其名號,即得淺處。

YOU SHI PU SA WEI SHEN LI GU. RUO WEI DA SHUI SUO PIAO, SHENG QI MING HAO, JI DE QIAN CHU.thanks to the imposing supernatural power of this Bodhisattva. "If he should be carried off by a great river and

call upon this Bodhisattva's name, then straightway he would find a shallow place.

若有百千萬億眾生,為求金、銀、琉璃、硨磲、瑪瑙、珊瑚、琥珀、真珠等寶,

RUO YOU BAI QIAN WAN YI ZHONG SHENG, WEI QIU JIN, YIN, LIU LI, CHE QU, MA NAO, SHAN HU, HU PO, ZHEN ZHU DENG BAO, "If a hundred thousand myriads of millions of living beings enter the great sea in quest of gold, silver, vaidurya,

giant clamshell, agate, coral, amber, pearl, and other such gems,

入於大海,假使黑風吹其船舫,飄墮羅剎鬼國,其中若有乃至一人,稱觀世音菩

薩名者,是諸人等,皆得解脫羅剎之難。「以是因緣,名觀世音。

RU YU DAI HAI, JIA SHI HEI FENG CHUI QI CHUAN PIAO, DUO LUO SHA GUI GUO. QI ZHONG RUO YOU NAI ZHI YI REN, CHENG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING ZHE, SHI ZHU REN DENG, JIE DE JIE TUO LUO CHA ZHI NAN.‘YI SHI YIN YUAN, MING GUAN SHI YIN.even if a black wind blows their ship away, carrying it off and plunging it into the realm of the raksasa-ghosts, if

there is among them but one man who calls upon the name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of

the World, those men shall be delivered from the troubles [caused by] the raksasas. It is for this reason that he is

called Observer of the Sounds of the World.

「若復有人,臨當被害,稱觀世音菩薩名者,彼所執刀杖,尋段段壞,而得解脫。

‘RUO FU YOU REN, LIN DANG BEI HAI, CHENG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING ZHE, BI SUO ZHE DAO ZHANG, XUN DUAN DUAN HAI, ER DE JIE TUO."If, again, a man who is about to be murdered calls upon the name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the

Sounds of the World, then the knives and staves borne by the other fellow shall be broken in pieces, and the man

shall gain deliverance.

若三千大千國土,滿中夜叉、羅剎,欲來惱人,聞其稱觀世音菩薩名者,是諸惡

鬼,尚不能以惡眼視之,況復加害?

RUO YOU SAN QIAN DA QIAN GUO TU, MAN ZHONG YE CHA, LUO CHA, YU LAI NAO REN, WEN QI CHENG GUAN SHINYIN PU SA MING ZHE, SHI ZHU E GUI, SHANG BU NENG YI E YAN SHI ZI, KUANG FU JIA HAI?"If there should be a thousand-millionfold world of lands filled with yaksas and raksasas who wish to come and

do harm to others, if they should but hear the name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the

World, these malignant ghosts would not be able even to look upon those others with evil eye, how much the

less to inflict harm on them!

設復有人,若有罪,若無罪,杻械枷鎖,檢繫其身,稱觀世音菩薩名者,皆悉斷壞,即得解脫。SHE FU YOU REN, RUO YOU ZUI, RUO WU ZUI, NIU XIE JIA SUO, JIAN XI QI SHEN,

CHENG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING ZHE, JIE XI DUAN HUAI, JI DE JIE TUO.

Even if there is a man, whether guilty or guiltless, whose body is fettered with stocks, pillory, or chains, if he

calls upon the name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, they shall all be severed and

broken, and he shall straightway gain deliverance.

若三千大千國土,滿中怨賊,有一商主,將諸商人,齎持重寶,經過險路,其中

一人,作是唱言:

RUO YOU SAN QIAN DA QIAN GUO TU, MAN ZHONG YUAN ZEI, YOU YI SHANG ZHU, JIANG ZHU SHANG REN, JI CHI ZHONG BAO, JING GUO XIAN LU, QI ZHONG YI REN, ZUO SHI CHANG YAN:If in a thousand-millionfold world of lands full of malicious bandits there is a merchant chief whose men are

carrying precious gems over a road by a steep drop, if there is among them one man who makes this

proclamation:

『諸善男子!勿得恐怖!汝等應當一心稱觀世音菩薩名號,是菩薩能以無畏施於

眾生,汝等若稱名者,於此怨賊,當得解脫!』

‘ZHU SHAN NAN ZI! WU DE KONG BU! NU DENG YING DANG YI XIN CHENG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING HAO, SHI PU SA NENG YI WU WEI SHI YU ZHONG SHENG, NU DENG RUO CHENG MING ZHE, YU CHI YUAN ZEI, DANG DE JIE TUO!’'Good men, do not let terror take possession of you! You all must single-mindedly call upon the name of the

Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World. For that Bodhisattva can confer fearlessness upon

living beings. If you all call upon his name, then from these malicious bandits you shall contrive to be delivered!

眾商人聞,俱發聲言:『南無觀世音菩薩!』稱其名故,即得解脫!ZHONG SHANG REN WEN, JU FA SHEN YAN: ‘NA MO GUAN SHI YIN PU SA!’ CHENG QI

MING GU, JI DE JIE TUO!

and if the multitude of merchants, hearing this, speak these words in unison, saying, 'Namo Bodhisattvaya He

Who Observes the Sounds of the World!' ; then, by the mere calling upon his name, they shall forthwith gain

deliverance

「無盡意!觀世音菩薩摩訶薩,威神之力,巍巍如是。

‘WU JIN YI! GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MO HE SA, WEI SHEN ZHI LI, WEI WEI RU SHI.‘Inexhaustible Mind, the imposing, supernatural power of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the

World is as sublime as this!

「若有眾生,多於淫欲,常念恭敬觀世音菩薩,便得離欲。若多瞋恚,常念恭敬觀世音菩薩,便得離瞋。

‘RUO YOU ZHONG SHENG, DUO YU YIN YU, CHANG NIAN GONG JING GUAN SHI YIN PU

SA, BIAN DE LI YU. RUO DUO CHEN HUI, CHANG NIAN GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, BIAN DE LI

CHI.

‘If there are beings of much lust who are constantly mindful of and humbly respectful to the Bodhisattva He

Who Observes the Sounds of the World, they shall straightway contrive to be separated from their lust. If those

with much anger are constantly mindful of and humbly respectful to the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the

Sounds of the World, they shall straightway contrive to be separated from their anger.

若多愚癡,常念恭敬觀世音菩薩,便得離癡。

RUO DUO YU CHI, CHANG NIAN GUAN SHIYIN PU SA, BIAN DE LI CHI.If those of much folly are constantly mindful of and humbly respectful to the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the

Sounds of the World, they shall straightway contrive to be separated from their folly.

「無盡意!觀世音菩薩,有如是等大威神力,多所饒益,是故眾生,常應心念。

‘WU JIN YI! GUAN SHHI YIN PU SA, YOU RU SHI DENG DA WEI SHEN LI, DUO SHUO RAO YI, SHI GU ZHONG SHENG, CHANG YING XIN NIAN.Inexhaustible Mind! Such imposing supernatural power has the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of

the World, so many are the benefits he confers! For this reason the beings should ever bear him in mind.

「若有女人,設欲求男,禮拜供養觀世音菩薩,便生福德智慧之男,

RUO YOU NU REN, SHE YU QIU NAN, LI BAI GONG YANG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, BIAN SHENG FU DE ZHI HUI ZHI NAN, ‘If there is a woman, and if she is desirous and hopeful of having a son, making worshipful offerings to the

bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, she shall straightway bear a son of happiness,

excellence, and wisdom.

設欲求女,便生端正有相之女,宿植德本,眾人愛敬。

SHE YU QIU NU, BIAN SHENG DUAN ZHENG YOU XIANG ZHI NU, SHU ZU DE BEN, ZHONG REN AI JING.If she be desirous and hopeful of having a daughter, she shall straightway bear a daughter, upright and endowed

with proper marks, one who has previously planted wholesome roots, who is loved and honored by a multitude

of men.

「無盡意!觀世音菩薩,有如是力。

WU JIN YI! GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, YOU RU SHI LI.O Inexhaustible Mind, such is the power of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World!

「若有眾生,恭敬禮拜觀世音菩薩,福不唐捐。是故眾生,皆應受持觀世音菩薩名

號。

‘RUO YOU ZHONG SHENG, GONG JING LI BAI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, FU BU TANG JUAN. SHI GU ZHONG SHENG, JIE YING SHOU CHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING HAO.‘If there are beings who in humble reverence worship the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the

World, their happiness shall not be vainly cast aside, "For this reason the beings must all receive and keep the

name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World.

「無盡意!若有人受持六十二億恒河沙菩薩名字,復盡形供養飲食、衣服、臥具、醫

藥,於汝意云何?是善男子,善女人,功德多不?」

‘WU JIN YI! RUO YOU REN SHOU CHI LIU SHI ER YI HENG HE SHA PU SA MING ZI, FU JIN XING GONG YANG YIN SHI, YI FU, WUO JU, YI YAO, YU NU YI YUN HE? SHI SHAN NAN ZI, SHAN NU REN, GONG DE DUO BU?’Inexhaustible Mind! If there is anyone who receives and keeps the names of Bodhisattvas as numerous as the

sands of sixty-two million Ganges rivers, also exhausting his whole physical being in offering food and drink,

clothing, bedding, and medicine, in your thinking how shall it be? Shall the merit of this good man or good

woman be much or not?"

無盡意言:「甚多!世尊!」

WU JIN YI YAN: ‘SHEN DUO! SHI ZUN!’Inexhaustible Mind said, "Very much, O World-Honored One!"

佛言:「若復有人受持觀世音菩薩名號,乃至一時禮拜供養,是二人福,正等無

異,於百千萬億劫,不可窮盡。

FO YAN: ‘RUO FU YOU REN SHOU CHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING HAO, NAI ZHI YI SHI LI BAI GONG YANG, SHI ER REN FU, ZHENG DENG WU YI, YU BAI QIAN WAN JIE, BU KE QIONG JIN. The Buddha said, "If again there is a man who receives and keeps the name of the Bodhisattva He Who

Observes the Sounds of the World, making worshipful offerings to it but once, the happiness of these two shall

be equal and undifferentiated, not to be exhausted in a hundred thousand myriads of millions of kalpas.

「無盡意!受持觀世音菩薩名號,得如是無量無邊福德之利。」

‘WU JIN YI! SHOU CHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MING HAO, DE RU SHI WU LIANG WU BIAN FU DE ZHI LI.’Inexhaustible Mind! One who accepts and keeps the name of the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World shall gain the benefit of merits as incalculable and as limitless as these!"

無盡意菩薩白佛言:「世尊!觀世音菩薩,云何遊此娑婆世界?云何而為眾生說

法?方便之力其事云何?」

WU JIN YI PU SA BAI FO YAN: ‘SHI ZUN! GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, YUN HE YOU CI SA PO SHI JIE? YUN HE ER WEI ZHONG SHENG SHUO FA? FANG BIAN ZHI LI QI SHI YUN HE?’The Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind addressed the Buddha, saying, "O World-Honored One! How does the

Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World travel in this Saha world-sphere? How does he preach

Dharma to living beings? As to his power of resorting to expedient devices, what is the manner of it?"

佛告無盡意菩薩:「善男子!若有國土眾生,應以佛身得度者,觀世音菩薩即現

佛身而為說法。

FO GAO WU JIN YI PU SA: ‘SHAN NAN ZHI! RUO YOU GUO TU ZHONG SHENG, YING YI FO SHEN DE DU ZHE, GUAN SHI YIN PU SA JI XIAN FO GAO SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.The Buddha declared to the Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind, "Good Man, if there are beings in the land who

can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a Buddha, then to them the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the

Sounds of the World preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a Buddha.

應以辟支佛身得度者,即現辟支佛身而為說法。

YING YI PI ZHI FO SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN PI ZHI FO SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a pratyekabuddha he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a pratyekabuddha.

應以聲聞身得度者,即現聲聞身而為說法。

YING YI SHEN WEN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN SHEN WEN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a voice-hearer he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a voice-hearer.

應以梵王身得度者,即現梵王身而為說法。

YING YI FAN WANG SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN FAN WANG SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a Brahma-king he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a Brahma-king.

應以帝釋身得度者,即現帝釋身而為說法。

YING YI DI SHI SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN DI SHI SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the god Sakra he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of the god sakra.

應以自在天身得度者,即現自在天身而為說法。

YING YI ZI ZAI TIAN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN ZI ZAI TIAN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the Self-Mastering God he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of the Self-Mastering God.

應以大自在天身得度者,即現大自在天身而為說法。

YING YI DA ZI ZAI TAIN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN DA ZI ZAI TIAN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the Great Self-Mastering God he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of the Great Self-Mastering God.

應以天大將軍身得度者,即現天大將軍身而為說法。

YING YI TIAN DA JIANG JUN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN TIAN DA JIANG JUN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the general of the gods he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of the general of the gods.

應以毘沙門身得度者,即現毘沙門身而為說法。YING YI BI SHA MEN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN BI SHA MEN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.

To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of Vaisravana he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of Vaisravana.

應以小王身得度者,即現小王身而為說法。YING YI XIAO WANG SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN XIAO WANG SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.

To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a lesser king he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a lesser king.

應以長者身得度者,即現長者身而為說法。

YING YI ZHANG ZHE SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN ZHANG ZHE SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of an elder he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of an elder.

應以居士身得度者,即現居士身而為說法。

YING YI JU SHI SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN JU SHI SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a householder he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a householder.

應以宰官身得度者,即現宰官身而為說法。

YING YI ZAI GUAN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN ZAI GUAN SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of an official he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of an official.

應以婆羅門身得度者,即現婆羅門身而為說法。

YING YI PO LUO MEN SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN PO LUO MEN SHEN DE DU ZHE.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of a Brahman he displays the body of a Brahman.

應以比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷身得度者,即現比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷

身而為說法。

YING YI BI QIU, BI QIU NI, YOU PO SHE, YOU PO YI SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN BI QIU, BI QIU NI, YOU PO SHE, YOU PO YI SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of bhiksu, bhiksuni, upasaka, or upasika he preaches

Dharma by displaying the body of bhiksu, bhiksuni, upasaka, or upasika.

應以長者、居士、宰官、婆羅門、婦女身得度者,即現婦女身而為說法。

YING YI ZHANG ZHE, JU SHI, ZAI GUAN, PO LUO MEN, FU NU SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI ZIAN FU NU SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the wife of elder, householder, official, or Brahman

he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of a woman.

應以童男、童女身得度者,即現童男、童女身而為說法。

YING YI TONG NAN, TONG NU SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN TONG NAN, TONG NU SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can conveyed to deliverance by the body of boy or girl he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of boy or girl.

應以天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩[目+侯]羅伽、人非人等身得

度者,即皆現之而為說法。

YING YI TIAN, LONG, YE CHA, QIAN TA PO, O XIU LUO, JIA LOU LUO, JIN NA LUO, MO HE LUO QIE, REN FEI REN DENG SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI JIE XIAN ZHI ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of god dragon, yaksa, gandharva, asura, garuda,

kinnara, mahoraga, human, or nonhuman he preaches Dharma by displaying the appropriate body.

應以執金剛神得度者,即現執金剛神而為說法。

YING YI ZHE JIN GANG SHEN DE DU ZHE, JI XIAN ZHE JIN GANG SHEN ER WEI SHUO FA.To those who can be conveyed to deliverance by the body of the spirit who grasps the thunderbolt (Vajrapani) he preaches Dharma by displaying the body of the spirit who grasps the thunderbolt.

「無盡意!是觀世音菩薩,成就如是功德,以種種形,遊諸國土,度脫眾生。是故

汝等應當一心供養觀世音菩薩。

‘WU JIN YI! SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, CHENG JIU RU SHI GONG DE, YI ZHONG ZHONG XING, DU TUO ZHONG SHENG, SHI GU NU DENG YING DANG YI XIN GONG YANG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA.Inexhaustible Mind! The Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, having achieved such merit as

this and by resort to a variety of shapes, travels in the world, conveying the beings to salvation. For this reason

you must all single-mindedly make offerings to the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World.

是觀世音菩薩摩訶薩,於怖畏急難之中,能施無畏,是故此娑婆世界,皆號之為

施無畏者。」

SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA MO HE SA, YU BU WEI JI NAN ZHI ZHONG, NENG SHI WU WEI, SHI GU CHI SA PO SHI JIE, JIE HAO ZHI WEI SHI WU WEI ZHE.’This Bodhisattva -mahasattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World in the midst of terror, emergency, and

trouble can confer the gift of fearlessness. For this reason this whole Saha world-sphere calls him the One Who

Confers the Gift of Fearlessness.’

無盡意菩薩白佛言:「世尊!我今當供養觀世音菩薩。」即解頸眾寶珠瓔珞,價值

百千兩金,而以與之,作是言:

WU JIN YI PU SA BAI FO YAN: ‘SHI ZUN! WO JIN DANG GONG YANG GUAN SHI YIN PU SA.’ JI JIE JING ZHONG BAO ZHU YIN LUO, JIA ZHI BAI QIAN LIANG JIN, ER ZHI YU ZHI, ZUO SHI YAN: The Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind addressed the Buddha, saying, "O World-Honored One! I will now present

an offering to the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World." Straightway he undid his necklace

of many precious gems, whose value was a hundred thousand taels of gold, and gave it to him, saying these

words:

「仁者!受此法施,珍寶瓔珞。」時觀世音菩薩,不肯受之。無盡意菩薩復白觀世音

菩薩言:「仁者!愍我等故,受此瓔珞。」

‘REN ZHE! SHOU CI FA SHI, ZHEN BAO YING LUO. ‘SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA BU KEN SHOU ZHI. WU JIN YI PU FU BAI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA YAN: ‘ REN ZHE! MIN WO DENG GU, SHOU CI YING LUO.’"Sir, accept this Dharma-gift, this necklace of precious jewels!" But at the time the. Bodhisattva He Who

Observes the Sounds of the World would not accept it. Inexhaustible Mind again addressed the Bodhisattva He

Who Observes the Sounds of the World, saying, "Out of pity for us, accept this necklace!"

爾時佛告觀世音菩薩:「當愍此無盡意菩薩,及四眾、天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅

迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩[目+侯]羅伽、人非人等故,受是瓔珞!」

ER SHI FO GAO GUAN SHI YIN PU SA: ‘DANG MIN CI WU JIN YI PU SA, JI SI ZHONG, TIAN, LONG, YE CHA, QIAN TA PO,O XIU LUO, JIA LOU LUO, JIN NA LUO, MO HOU LUO QIE, REN FEI REN DENG GU, SHOU SHI YING LUO!’At that time, the Buddha declared to the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World that he should,

out of pity for that Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind and his fourfold assembly, as well as for the gods, dragons,

yaksas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and nonhumans, accepted that necklace.

即時,觀世音菩薩,愍諸四眾、及於天、龍、人非人等,受其瓔珞,分作二分,一

分奉釋迦牟尼佛,一分奉多寶佛塔。

JI SHI, GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, MIN ZHU SI ZHONG, JI YU TIAN, LONG, REN FEI REN DENG, SHOU QI YING LUO, FEN ZUO ER FEN, YI FEN FENG SHI JIA MOU NI FO, YI FEN FENG DUO BAO FO TA.Immediately thereupon the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, out of pity for the fourfold

assembly and for the gods, dragons, humans, and nonhumans, accepted the necklace, dividing it into two parts,

one of which he presented to Sakyamuni-buddha, the other of which he presented to the stupa of the Buddha

Many Jewels.

「無盡意!觀世音菩薩,有如是自在神力,遊於娑婆世界!」

WU JIN YI! GUAN SHI YIN PU SA, YOU RU SHI ZI ZAI WEI SHEN LI, YOU YU SA PO SHI JIE!"O Inexhaustible Mind! In possession of such supernatural powers of self-mastery as these does the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World travel in the Saha world-sphere!"

爾時,無盡意菩薩以偈問曰:

ER SHI WU JIN YI PU SA YI JI WEN YUE: At that time, the Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Mind questioned by resort to a gatha, saying:

「世尊妙相具,我今重問彼,佛子何因緣,名為觀世音?

SHI ZUN MIAO XIANG JU, WO JIN ZHONG WEN BI, FO ZHI HE YIN YUAN, MING WEI GUAN SHI YIN?O World-Honored One, fully endowed with subtle signs! Now again I ask about that

Son of the Buddha for what reason

He is named the One Who Observes the Sounds of the World.

具足妙相尊,偈答無盡意:汝聽觀音行,善應諸方所,

JU ZU MIAO XIANG ZUN, JI TA WUN JIN YI:NU TING GUAN YIN XING, SHAN YING ZHU FANG SUO,[The Buddha replied:] Listen you to the conduct of the Sound-Observer, The one who responds well to all places in all directions!

弘誓深如海,歷劫不思議,侍多千億佛,發大清淨願。

HONG SHI SHEN RU HAI, LI JIE BU SI YI,SHI DUO QIAN YI FO, FA DA QING JING YUAN.His broad vows as deep as the ocean, Throughout kalpas beyond reckoning or discussion He has served many thousands of millions of Buddhas,Uttering great and pure vows.

我為汝略說,聞名及見身,心念不空過,能滅諸有苦。

WO WEI NU LUE SHUO, WEN MING JI JIAN SHEN,XIN NIAN BU KONG GUO, NENG MIE ZHU YOU KU.I will tell it to you in brief. The hearing of his name, the sight of his body, And the recollection of him in thought do not pass away in vain, For he can extinguish the woes of existence.

假使興害意,推落大火坑;念彼觀音力,火坑變成池。

JIA SHI XING HAI YI, TUI LUO DA HUO KENG;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, HUO KENG BIAN CHENG CHI.Even if someone whose thoughts are malicious Should push one into a great pit of fire, By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer The pit of fire would turn into a pool.

或漂流巨海,龍魚諸鬼難;念彼觀音力,波浪不能沒。

HUO PIAO LIU JU HAI, LONG YU ZHU GUI NAN;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, BO LANG BU NENG MO.Or, one might be afloat in a great sea, In which are dragons, fish and sundry ghosts. By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer The waves could not drown one.

或在須彌峰,為人所推墮;念彼觀音力,如日虛空住。

HUO ZAI XU MI FENG, WEI REN SUO TUI DUO;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, RU RI XU KONG ZHU.Or, being on the peak of Sumeru, One might by another be pushed off. By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, Like the sun itself one would dwell in space.

或被惡人逐,墮落金剛山;念彼觀音力,不能損一毛。

HUO BEI E REN ZHU, DUO LUO JIN GANG SHAN;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, BU NENG SUN YI MAO.Or, one might by an evil man be chased Down from a diamond mountain. By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer He could not harm a single hair [on one's head].

或值怨賊繞,各執刀加害;念彼觀音力,咸即起慈心。

HUO ZHI YUAN ZEI RAO, GE ZHI DAO JIA HAI;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, XIAN JI QI CI XIN.Or, one might be surrounded by enemies, Each carrying a knife and intending to inflict harm. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer All would straightway produce thoughts of good will.

或遭王難苦,臨刑欲壽終;念彼觀音力,刀尋段段壞。

HUO ZAO WANG NAN KU, LIN XING YU SHOU ZHONG;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, DAO XUN DUAN DUAN HUAIOr, one might encounter royally ordained woes, Facing execution and the imminent end of one's life. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer The knives would thereupon break in pieces.

或囚禁枷鎖,手足被杻械;念彼觀音力,釋然得解脫。

HUO QIU JIN JIA SUO, SHOU ZU BEI NIU XIE;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, SHIH RAN DE JIE TUO.Or, one might be confined in a pillory, One's hands and one's feet in stocks. By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer One would freely gain release.

咒詛諸毒藥,所欲害身者;念彼觀音力,還著於本人。

ZHUO ZU ZHU DU YAO, SUO YU HAI SHEN ZHE;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, HUAN ZHU YU BEN REN. When either by spells, or by curses, or by various poisonous herbs, [Someone] wishes to harm his body, the victim, By virtue of his constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, Shall send them all back to plague their authors.

或遇惡羅剎,毒龍諸鬼等;念彼觀音力,時悉不敢害。

HUO YU E LUO SHA, DULONG ZHU GUI DENG;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, SHI XI BU GAN HAI. Or, one might encounter evil raksasas, Poisonous dragons, ghosts, and the like. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, They would not dare to do one harm.

若惡獸圍繞,利牙爪可怖;念彼觀音力,疾走無邊方。

RUO E SHOU WEI RAO, LI YA ZHAO KE BU;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, JI ZOU WU BIAN FANG.Or, one may be surrounded by malicious beasts, Sharp of tooth and with claws to be dreaded. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, They shall quickly run off to immeasurable distance.

蚖蛇及蝮蠍,氣毒煙火燃;念彼觀音力,尋聲自迴去。

YUAN SHE JI FU XIE, QI DU YAN HUO RAN;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, XUN SHEN ZI HUI QU. There may be poisonous snakes and noxious insects, Their breath deadly, smoking and flaming with fire. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, At the sound of one's voice they will go away of themselves.

雲雷鼓掣電,降雹澍大雨;念彼觀音力,應時得消散。

YUN LEI GU CHE DIAN. JIANG BAO SHU DA YU;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, YING SHI DE XIAO SAN.The clouds, rolling the thunder drums and dispatching the lightning, Send down the hail and pour forth the great rains. By virtue of one's constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer, At that very moment one can dry up and dissipate them.

眾生被困厄,無量苦逼身;觀音妙智力,能救世間苦。

ZHONG SHENG BEI KUN E, WU LIANG KU BI SHEN;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, NENG JIU SHI JIAN KU.The beings suffer embarrassment and discomfort; Incalculable woes press in upon them. The Sound-Observer, by virtue of his unblemished knowledge, Can rescue the world from its woes.

具足神通力,廣修智方便,十方諸國土,無剎不現身。

JU ZU SHEN TONG LI, GUANG XIU ZHI FANG BIAN,SHI FANG ZHU GUO TU, WU ZHA BU XIAN SHEN. He is fully endowed with the power of supernatural penetration And broadly cultivates wisdom and expedient devices; In the lands of all ten quarters There is no ksetra where he does not display his body.

種種諸惡趣,地獄鬼畜生,生老病死苦,以漸悉令滅。

ZHONG ZHONG ZHU E QU, DI YU GUI CHU SHENG,SHENG LAO BING SI KU, YI JIAN XI LING MIEThe various evil destinies, Those of hell, ghosts, and beasts, As well as the pains of birth, old age, sickness, and death, All little by little are extinguished.

真觀清淨觀,廣大智慧觀,悲觀及慈觀,常願常瞻仰。

ZHEN GUAN QING JING GUAN, GUANG DA ZHI HUI GUAN,BEI GUAN JI CI GUAN, CHANG YUAN CHANG ZHAN YANG.O you of the true gaze, of the pure gaze, Of the gaze of broad and great wisdom, Of the compassionate gaze and the gaze of good will! We constantly desire, constantly look up to,

無垢清淨光,慧日破諸暗,能伏災風火,普明照世間。

WU GOU QING JING GUAN, HUI RI PO ZHU AN,NENG FU ZAI FENG HUI, PU MING ZHAO SHI JIAN. The spotlessly pure ray of light, The sun of wisdom that banishes all darkness, That can subdue the winds and flames of misfortune And everywhere give bright light to the world.

悲體戒雷震,慈意妙大雲,澍甘露法雨,滅除煩惱焰。

BEI TI JIE LEI ZHEN, CI YI MIAO DA YUN, SHU GAN LU FA YU, MIE CHU FAN NAO YAN.The thunder of the monastic prohibitions, whose essence is good will, And the great and subtle cloud, which is the sense of compassion, Pour forth the Dharma-rain of sweet dew, Extinguishing and removing the flames of agony.

諍訟經官處,怖畏軍陣中;念彼觀音力,眾怨悉退散。

ZHENG SONG JING GUAN CHU, BU WEI JUN ZHEN ZHONG;NIAN BI GUAN YIN LI, ZHONG YUAN XI TUI SAN.When disputes go through civil offices, When they terrify military camps, By virtue of constant mindfulness of Sound-Observer The multitude of enemies shall all withdraw and scatter.

妙音觀世音,梵音海潮音,勝彼世間音,是故須常念。

MIAO YIN GUAN SHI YIN, FAN YIN HAI CHAO YIN,SHENG BI SHI JIAN YIN, SHI GU XU CHANG NIAN.The delicate-voiced One Who Observes the Sounds of the World And the Brahma-voiced sound of the tide Are superior to the sounds of the world. Therefore one must ever be mindful of them.

念念勿生疑,觀世音淨聖,於苦惱死厄,能為作依怙。

NIAN NIAN WU SHENG YI, GUAN SHI YIN JING SHENG,YU KU NAO SI E, NENG WEI ZUO YI HU. From moment to moment conceive no doubts, For the pure saint Who Observes the Sounds of the World In the discomforts of pain, agony, and death Can be a point of reliance.

具一切功德,慈眼視眾生,福聚海無量,是故應頂禮。」

JU YI QIE GONG DE, CI YAN SHI ZHONG SHENG,FU JU HAI WU LIANG, SHI GU YING DING LI.Fully endowed with all the merits,His benevolent eye beholding the beings, He is happiness accumulated, a sea incalculable. For this reason one must bow one's head to him.

爾時,持地菩薩,即從座起,前白佛言:「世尊!若有眾生,聞是觀世音菩薩品,

自在之業,普門示現,神通力者,當知是人,功德不少。」

ER SHI, CHI DI PU SA, JI CONG ZUO QI, QIAN BAI FO YAN: SHI ZUN! RUO YOU ZHONG SHENG, WEN SHI GUAN SHI YIN PU SA PIN ZHI ZAI ZHI YE, PU MEN SHI XIAN, SHEN TONG LI ZHE, DANG ZHE SHI REN GONG DE BU SHAO.At that time the Bodhisattva Earth-Holder (Dharanimdhara) straightway rose from his seat and, coming forward,

addressed the Buddha, saying, "O World-Honored One! If there is a living being who shall hear this Chapter of

the Bodhisattva He Who Observes the Sounds of the World, the deeds of self-mastery, the manifestation of the

gateway to everywhere, the powers of supernatural penetration, be it known that that person's merit shall not be

slight. "

佛說是普門品時,眾中八萬四千眾生,皆發無等等阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。

FO SHUO SHI PU MEN PIN SHI, ZHONG ZHONG BA WAN SI QIAN ZHONG SHENG, JIE FA WU DENG DENG A NIU DUO LUO SAN MIAO SAN PU TI XIN.When the Buddha preached this Chapter of the Gateway to Everywhere, within the multitude were eighty-four

thousand living beings all of whom opened up their thoughts to unequaled anuttarasamyaksambodhi…

It is difficult to repay the blessings of Avalokitesvara, Her purity and adornment through aeons of

cultivation, And thirty-two manifestations which appear in countless worlds, As she teaches this world

Jambudvipa over billions of aeons. Constantly purifying through the nectar of the deathless within her

vase, The willow branch in her hand means no sign of autumn comes, One thousand prayers to her,

lead to one thousand responses, As she ferries humanity across the ocean of suffering. Homage to

Potala Mountain, the Realm of Lapis Lazuli, Most Kind and Most Compassionate Avalokitesvara

Bodhisattva.
