This 737-300/400 Systems CD was created with the goal of thoroughly reviewing aircraft systems only (fuel,
electrical, hydraulics etc.). As a courtesy, our developers have included this Automatic Flight presentation,
which is a very brief description of the Mode Control Panel (MCP), Autopilot and Autothrottle. If you desire a
detailed presentation on the Automatic Flight system, we recommend purchasing software which is
dedicated to this subject matter. Thank you!

The MCP provides the pilots with a central control panel to operate the autopilots (A/P),
autothrottle (A/T), and flight directors (F/D).
The Autopilot Flight Director System (AFDS) is a dual system consisting of two individual flight
control computers (FCCs) and a single mode control panel (MCP).

The switches on the panel are pressed to select desired command modes. When selected,
the switch illuminates to indicate that the mode has been selected. Illumination of the switch
also indicates that the mode can be deselected by pressing the switch again. While a mode
is active, it is possible for de-selection of that mode to be automatically inhibited. This is
indicated by the respective switch being extinguished.
When engagement of a mode would be in conflict with the current operation, pressing the
switch has no effect. All modes can be disengaged either by selecting another mode or by
disengaging the A/P and turning the F/Ds off.

The A/T system provides automatic thrust control from the beginning of takeoff, through climb,
cruise, descent, approach, and landing or go-around. Both thrust levers incorporate a separate
servo motor. The A/T system automatically moves the thrust levers forward and aft via these
servo motors.
Manually repositioning the thrust levers does not cause A/T disengagement unless 10 of thrustlever separation is exceeded during a dual channel approach after FLARE armed is annunciated.
Following manual repositioning, the A/T system may automatically reposition the thrust levers to
comply with computed thrust requirements, except while in the THR HLD and ARM modes.

A/T ARM Switch:
ARM
Arms the A/T for engagement. Switch is magnetically held in the ARM position. With the switch in
the ARM position, the A/T will engage automatically when the following modes are engaged: LVL
CHG, ALT ACQ, V/S, VNAV, ALT HOLD, G/S capture, and TO/GA.
OFFDisengages A/T and prevents automatic A/T engagement.
Any of the following actions or conditions will automatically disengage the A/T:
Moving the A/T ARM switch to OFF.
Pressing either A/T disengage switch.
Two seconds have elapsed since touchdown.
Thrust levers separate more than 10 during a dual channel approach (after FLARE armed is annunciated).
The A/T system has detected a fault.

instrument approaches. After pressing the LNAV switch, LNAV will engage if an active route has
been entered in the FMC and the aircraft is within 3 NM of the route segment (aircraft heading is
not a factor when within 3 NM of the active route segment). When outside of 3 NM, the aircraft

The APP (approach) mode arms the AFDS to capture and track the localizer and glideslope.
APP can be engaged for single or dual A/P operation. One VHF NAV receiver must be tuned to an
ILS frequency before the APP mode can be engaged. For dual A/P operation, both VHF NAV
receivers must be tuned to the ILS frequency and both A/Ps must be selected to CMD (command)
prior to 800 feet RA. The APP mode is the only mode that will allow both A/Ps to be engaged at the
same time.
APP Switch:

Annunciates VOR/LOC armed and G/S armed on the AFDS portion of the flight mode annunciator.

Each A/P may be engaged separately in CMD (command) or CWS (control wheel steering). A/P
engagement in CMD or CWS is inhibited unless both of the following pilot-controlled conditions are
satisfied:
No force applied to the control wheel.
The STAB TRIM AUTOPILOT CUTOUT switch is positioned to NORMAL.
Only one A/P may be engaged at any given time unless the APP mode is engaged. Dual A/P
operation provides aircraft control from the approach through the landing flare and touchdown or
automatic go-around.
During single A/P operation, full automatic flare and touchdown capability are not available.
Automatic go-around capability is also not available.

Master (MA) Flight Director Indicators:
Normally, the A FCC drives the Captains F/D bars and the B FCC drives the First Officers F/D
bars. However, with both F/D switches ON, the logic for both pilots F/D modes are controlled by
the master FCC.
The master FCC is indicated by illumination of the respective master (MA) F/D indicator light (the
MCP panel pictured above indicates the A FCC is the master). The master FCC is determined as
follows:
With neither A/P currently engaged in CMD, the FCC for the first F/D selected ON is the
master FCC.
With one or both A/Ps currently engaged in CMD, the FCC for the first A/P selected to CMD is the
master FCC; regardless of which F/D switch is selected ON first.
Note: Once a master FCC has been determined, the same status modes will be displayed on both
the Captains and First Officers flight mode annunciators.

Master (MA) Flight Director Indicators:
Independent F/D operation is indicated by illumination of both master (MA) F/D indicator lights.
During independent F/D operation, the F/D modes are controlled directly from the respective FCC
(A or B) under certain conditions.
Independent F/D operationoccurs when neither A/P is engaged in CMD, both F/D switches are
selected ON, and one of the following mode conditions exists: The APP mode is engaged with LOC and G/S captured.
GA mode engaged (by pressing TO/GA buttons) below 400 ft. RA.
TO mode engaged (by pressing TO/GA buttons) below 400 ft. RA.
Note: It is the opening of the TR3 disconnect relay that actually signals independent F/D operation.
When the TR3disconnect relay opens, this isolates the two DC power sources to the FCCs. This
isolation will prevent a failure of one DC bus from possibly causing the other DC bus to fail in a way
which could result in erroneous flight director displays.

Master (MA) Flight Director Indicators:
The MA flight director light logic is summarized below
If a F/D switch is in the ON position, the illumination of the associated MA light indicates that the
respective FCC is the master, and therefore is controlling the both F/D modes.
If a F/D switch is in the ON position and the associated MA light is extinguished, the F/D modes for
the respective F/D are being controlled by the opposite FCC.
Looking at the MCP above, it can be determined that the A FCC is the master, and the B FCC is
not the master. The A FCC is controlling the F/D modes for both the Captains and First Officers
F/D. However, if the First Officers MA light was also illuminated in the picture above, this would
indicate independent F/D operation. As a result, the F/D modes would be controlled directly from
the respective FCC.
This concludes the review of the MCP. The next section will discuss the
Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) and various other automatic flight topics. Click Nextto continue.
