The mission of the Boone First United Methodist Church is to glorify God by nurturing disciples to

live and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What is it we say about the people who don't study history? They are destined to repeat it? There are things about the past worth remem-bering.

The Bible frequently coun-sels us to remember the faithful-ness of God. "I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will re-member your works of old”.

(Psalm 77:11)

A prodigal son's memory of home saved him from death in a pig-sty….and what did Jesus say about the bread and the wine? "Do this in remembrance of me."

There is a big difference between learning from the past and holding to certain memories with appropriate gratitude…and clinging to the past.

I'm often amazed at how we can spend time longing for the "good old days." Which “good old days” are we talking about? The pre-indoor plumbing days of a hundred years ago? The racism of the 1950s? The days before recent medical advances that saved your life? When I tend to get that way, I try to remind my-self that the “good old days” were never really as “good” as I make them out to be in my mind.

Living in a rearview mirror creates a distorted view of reality. The idea that…people used to be happier, work was more virtuous, Christians were more spiritual, or families were safer in ages gone by…is simply a myth. For people

whose lives are centered in Christ, the best days are always yet to come. Living in the past…more specifically, clinging to the past…only forfeits today's oppor-tunities and tomorrow's blessings.

We have a number of tran-sitions on our plate at First UMC in Boone…we always have, we always will. Transitions are a part of life…kids will soon be leaving for college, jobs will be changing, relationships will be shifting, some folk will be getting married, some folk will get buried. It’s a comfort to take a look in the rearview mir-ror…and that’s OK…just don’t get stuck there. So resist the tempta-tions to long for what once was. Pray instead to live in hope, walk by faith, and rejoice in God's promises for the future.

…but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 3:13-14)

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

150 YEARS

On September 5, UMW will be celebrating our 150 years of service here at First UMC. If you have any memories to share with us please let Jan Carpenter, Lavonne Shearer, or Mary Wirtz know as soon as possible or you may leave them in the UMW box outside the church office.

This is the UMW’s largest fundraiser. Time goes fast and hopefully you have already been

putting things aside for the sale. This not only helps you declutter your home and garage, but

also helps raise money for our church and other missions in our community.

Remember NO TV’s, microwaves, or computers. What sells great are holiday decora-

tions, toys, games, puzzles, craft supplies, pictures, furniture, tools, small appliances, sports

equipment, bicycles, outdoor items, linens, and clothing to name a few. We ask that the items

be clean and in good working order.

You can bring your donations starting Friday, August 31st to the basement of the church

and put them on the stage in Fellowship Hall. We will start setting up on October 1st.

If you have any questions, contact Donna in the church office OR Florence Nimmo (515-275-

4151. We will be doing pick-ups for people who are unable to bring their donations to the

church. Dates will be scheduled later.

HOW MANY PEOPLE?

No doubt you have all heard jokes about “how many people does it take to change a light bulb”? **

But, joking aside, do you know how many people it takes to provide a meaningful and inspirational church service at FUMC (or

most any church)?

Let me give you a hint:

1. Number one of course is a PASTOR

2. An Organist and/or Pianist

3. Choir Director & Bell Choir Director

4. Volunteers to sing in the choir and play the bells

5. Praise Band for a Contemporary Service

6. Then we have ushers, greeters, acolytes, sound system operator and some one in charge of Power Point

7. Don’t forget the church secretary to type the bulletin, newsletter and print it along with other tasks each day AND volunteer help-

ers to fold the bulletin each week and cover for the secretary when she is on vacation or sick

8. Last but not least—the custodian to ready the sanctuary for service and keep all things clean, up-to-date and working properly.

Have you come up with an answer yet? 45? 50? I’m sure I have forgotten to list other important persons who fit into this question, but, hopefully I have made you think about it. I’m not sure there is an exact answer; too many to count. I think the only true answer is “A LOT”! It takes numerous staff and volunteers to bring a meaningful and inspirational church service to each of us. The Wor-ship Committee thanks everyone who helped with whatever area you were “wired” to serve in this past year. Think about what area

YOU might fit in as a volunteer for either of our Sunday morning services. We would love to hear from you.

Jacquie Grow, Worship Committee Chair

** How many Methodists does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: 5, one to change the bulb, and

4 to serve refreshments!

Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity

Iowa Habitat is transitioning to “repairing homes” across Boone County for 2019!!

Since 1995 they have built 28 homes for partner families to attain safe, healthy and

affordable housing. One difference with the “HELPING HANDS” program is that they

can go below the minimum income guides. This is more likely in situations where an

elderly homeowner (which experience indicates is likely to be 90% of those we assist)

owns their property outright and is living on a small Social Security pension. In ALL in-

stances we want to make sure the homeowner will not be burdened by the payment of

material costs. Volunteer labor remains free of charge and no profit or interest is ever added.

You will find a brochure on the table near the Sanctuary doors that you are free to take one and it will explain all the details.

As Always, laborers will be needed for these projects, so pray about how you can help.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD

SUNDAY, October 21, 2018

“For the Son of Man came NOT to be served, but to serve...” Mark 10:45

UMCOR and the United Methodist Church are key partners with Bread for the World. Our pray-

ers and actions as part of Bead for the World Sunday have special urgency this year. Because of

severe drought and civil strife, large parts of Africa and some Middle Eastern countries are

threatened with near-famine conditions. Already, one in six children in America lives in a family

that struggles to get enough to eat.

In response to these urgent needs we join with many other churches to pray and to act — so that our nation’s leaders put our country

and the world on track toward the goal of ending hunger by 2030.
