1 THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH August 2016 PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Friends, According to legend, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin was built on the spot where St. Patrick baptized converts to Christianity. While the cathedral dates from the 12 th century, records indicate that there was a church there as far back as 870. The cathedral’s history parallels much of Ireland’s tumultuous history. While it once was a Catholic cathedral, today it is the national cathedral for the Church of Ireland. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, once served as the Dean of the cathedral. One of the many stories about the cathedral involved two families, the Butlers and the Fitzgeralds. Both were vying for the same powerful political position of Lord Deputy. A feud erupted between the two families in 1477. By 1492, the Fitzgeralds had gained the upper hand, so the Butlers retreated to the cathedral and locked themselves in the Chapter House in the cathedral and claimed the ancient law of “sanctuary” which insured that they couldn’t be harmed as long as they were in the cathedral. Desiring an end to the feud, the head of the Fitzgerald family chopped a hole in the door behind which the Butlers had sought refuge. He then extended his hand through the hole to demonstrate that he was sincere in his desire to bring about peace. By doing so, he took the risk of having his arm chopped off. The act, however, was accepted by the Butlers as a sign of sincerity. Since then the door has been known as the Door of Reconciliation. The story gave rise to the Irish expression, “to chance your arm,” meaning to take a risk. Our understanding of reconciliation is that it means to be restored, to have relationships restored. In 1967, the country was embroiled in the civil rights struggle. There were countless demonstrations throughout the country, but prominently in the south. Many were led and inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King. In response to the time and the issues, the Presbyterian Church wrote and adopted the Confession of 1967 in which it says, “In Jesus Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself. Jesus Christ…lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation…Therefore, the church calls all to be reconciled to God and to one another.” Now we have adopted the Confession of Belhar, and it too deals with reconciliation, saying that reconciliation is both a gift and an obligation. The timing couldn’t have been better for it seems as though division is carrying the day. Everywhere you look there is division that at times seems bitter, that if left unabated could lead to feuds not unlike that between the Butlers and the Fitzgeralds. Now is the time for us “to chance an arm,” to reach out to others in an act of trust and desire to end enmity and civil strife.

THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

August 2016

PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Friends,

According to legend, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin was built on the spot where St. Patrick baptized converts to Christianity. While the cathedral dates from the 12th century, records indicate that there was a church there as far back as 870.

Jesus Christ…lived among us to fulfill the work of reconciliation…Therefore, the church calls all to be reconciled to God and to one another.”

Now we have adopted the Confession of Belhar, and it too deals with reconciliation, saying that reconciliation is both a gift and an obligation.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

I believe the church has been called to such a time as this to engage in the work of reconciliation. While the church has always been called to engage in reconciliation, now the work seems critically necessary. There are many ways we can do this. Engaging in the Kentucky Refugee ministry is one. Working with others in our community to address the opioid epidemic is another. We are called to find areas where we can work together. We are called to build bridges. It will not be easy work, but it is essential. As God in Jesus reconciled himself to us, so Christ calls us to be reconciled to one another.

Grace & peace, Jim

CHURCH PICNIC

WILL YOU VOLUNTEER?

Have you ever wondered what happens to the flowers in the sanctuary after Sunday services? Instead of discarding them, they are taken to our homebound members and those living in assisted living/nursing homes. NEEDED: Volunteers to distribute the flowers We need several people who are willing to distribute these flowers Sunday afternoon or Monday. Lynn Preston has a list of members who would like to receive flowers. Currently, volunteers make deliveries 4-6 times a year. What a way to brighten the day of those who are unable to join us on Sunday mornings! NEEDED: Coordinator of the flower distribution Karen Moore has served as the coordinator for 2 years and now needs to step down. The coordinator sets up a quarterly calendar after consulting with the volunteers about who is available which weeks. Lynn Preston will send reminders to those who are signed up during each quarter. Would you be willing to be our coordinator? For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lynn Preston in the church office or Mary Beth Garriott (home) 236-4925; (cell) 859-583-8321.

The Flamingos are coming!

We’ve received reports that a large flock of flamingos are heading towards Danville and will be taking up residence here!

Actually, these flamingos are here to help raise some funds on behalf of PYC and our continued ministry. Here’s how it works: During the week of August 21-27, flocks of plastic flamingos will be gathering on the front lawns of members of The Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Church. For a small donation (see below for details) you can have a friend’s lawn “flocked”. The flamingos will remain on the lawn for 24 hours before being moved to the next lawn. The youth will have a table in Fellowship Hall on August 14th and 21st where you can purchase a flock or two. You can also stop by the office or click here to fill out your own request.

The prices are: Small Flock (10 Flamingos) - $15 Donation Medium Flock (25 Flamingos) - $35 Donation Large Flock (50 Flamingos) - $55 Donation Super-Size Flock (75 Flamingos) - $75 Donation

But what if you don’t want to get flocked?! Well, there’s insurance for that! Flamingo Insurance can be bought from any of the PYC youth for $50. This insurance will protect you from any and all potential flockings. Insurance must be purchased by August 13th in order for it to take effect.

LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD

Your Living Waters for the World team will be traveling to the community of Iturbide in the Yucatan Peninsula on August 5, where we will partner with a small Presbyterian congregation to install a clean water system to serve the church and community. Affordable clean water will be available for God's people for years to come - thanks be to God, and thanks to YOU, for your continued support.

Now we ask for your prayers as we travel, work, worship and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in that community. We will try to be good ambassadors on your behalf!

Hasta luego! Your Living Waters Team

WOMEN’S GATHERING

Love one another, even as I have loved you.” - John 13:34

As more activities for women of the church are planned, remember that some will be during the day, and others will be in the evening. If you have suggestions for future gatherings, please talk to Pastor Hannah or Shari Stewart.

For those wishing to carpool, we will meet at the church parking lot at 10:30 a.m. the morning of Aug. 25, and we’ll leave at 10:45 a.m. Cost, including gratuity, is $25 per person. 18 ladies gathered at The Beaumont Inn Friday, July 14 for lunch.

Clean up con nues following West Virginia flooding The flooding severely damaged or destroyed more than 1,200 homes and businesses, leaving as many as 23 people dead. Volunteer teams quickly organized and immediately began clean up and relief efforts.

Pastoral care has been an important part of the clean up effort. Teams have been onsite to listen and pray with families impacted by the high water.

“It will be months, maybe years, before these people are able to return to their homes. PDA is planning to respond to this disaster as a long-term recovery event. Some of PDA’s responses will include working with National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) partners and FEMA, hosting volunteer work teams and providing emotional and spiritual care workshops, including Compassion Fatigue training for those who have been working with survivors for long periods of time,” said Rick Turner, PDA associate for national disaster response. “PDA will continue to help the people of West Virginia until the work is done or until resources run out.”

SESSION REPORT SESSION REPORT The Session held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, July 12, 2016. This is a summary of the reports received and actions taken at that meeting. The Session did not meet in June.

OLD BUSINESS None.

REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM COMMITTEES BUDGET AND FINANCE (Darren Peckler and Tom Quilligan). The monthly financial report was distributed and reviewed. Noting that the Budget Plan anticipated the need to supplement congregational giving with money from the Session Contingency account, the committee stated in its report that, “It is important to stress that the church remains financially strong. . . . We have sufficient resources to meet all commitments both on short term and longer range. The committee does however suggest that an appeal be made to the congregation asking that those that are able consider additional donations.” Jim Stewart has agreed to write a letter that will be sent to the congregation.

ADULT FORMATION (Bill Garriott). Planning for the 2016-17 programs has begun. The committee approved Hannah McIntyre’s request for support of an adult weekend trip to Mountain T.O.P. this fall, probably the weekend of October 6-9.

CHILDREN’S FORMATION (Laurie Pierce). The committee’s report detailed the planning for VBS, which was held June 27-30. Laurie Pierce and Adam Wade will co-chair the committee in the coming year.

FACILITIES AND GROUNDS (Darren Peckler and Roger Hartner). A new heat/air console had to be installed in the workroom of the office area, and painting and cleaning of the church’s exterior is almost completed. A new podium microphone will be purchased for the sanctuary. The parking lot needs to be resurfaced and striped.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC (Mark Hoebelheinrich and Rita Bloom). The annual church picnic will be held on August 28th at the church. There will be one worship service at 10:00 a.m. that day.

LOCAL MISSION (Melanie Thornberry). There will be a Showers of Blessings for school supplies in July.

WORLD MISSION (Beth Morgan). World Mission has received two substantial gifts designated for Living Waters of the World. The next trip is planned for August.

REPORT FROM THE BOARD OF DEACONS (Rhonda Green, Deacon Representative) Hospitality and Fellowship provided a light supper for the Stetson University Choir. Deacons have volunteered to provide the Arnold Towers meal in July, and will be responsible for November. Several people in the congregation have transportation needs. A call for volunteers for a transportation ministry will be made. Evie Smith and Paul Voss will coordinate.

REPORT FROM PRESBYTERY John Preston, Rita Bloom, Shane Wilson, Jean Harney, Jim Stewart, and Hannah McIntyre attended the called meeting of the Transylvania Presbytery on May 24 in Winchester. The meeting was called to consider a reorganization plan. The plan was approved, and the presbytery will now have a Commission on Pastoral Transitions, a Commission on Congregational Issues, and a Leadership Development Ministry. Bill Garriott Assistant Clerk of Session

Our own Chuck Keiser has written a book about his time as a veterinarian in Danville.

Dr. Keiser and Dr. Raitiere (illustrator) will do a story-telling / book-signing to benefit The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society Sunday, August 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ewen Room on the 2nd floor of the Campus Center at Centre College

Light refreshments will be served. Copies of the book may be purchased and signed that day.

In July, Ethan Baker showed off his acting chops when he performed in West T. Hill’s production of Once Upon a Mattress. Ethan delighted audiences with his portrayal of Prince Dauntless, a nice somewhat gullible guy who just wants to get married. Well done Ethan and we look forward to your next show.
