Pastor’s Ponderings
Preparing to be away at Pocono Plateau July 19 - 26, I am a bit earlier than normal in preparing this note. VBS has just begun. And what a JOY was last evening’s opening night.
From the 3-4 year old “Campers” through the Vol-unteers who are retired seniors, virtually every age and stage was present.
The volunteer corps was both men and women.
Likewise, the volunteer corps was a great mix from SRG (Spiritual Revolution Group), 1st Presbyterian, and Wesley.
In all, I experienced what Paul described to the church in Corinth:
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good...For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all bap-tized into one body...Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (NRSV: I Cor 12.4-7, 12, 27)
As young and old focused alike on the truth of God’s Love most fully revealed in Jesus, opening night of VBS was a glimpse of what we ask of God as we pray The Lord’s Prayer:
...Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…
Indeed, our opening night was God’s kingdom drawn near. Bathed in the kingdom experience, witnessing the diversity of community drawn together in the Unity of the Spirit, I departed with God’s assurance:
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (NRSV: Phil 4.13)
Facing so many challenges which can divide, may ours be this same experience: God’s kingdom drawn near and God’s assurance written upon our hearts.
Peace and Grace Pastor Tim Patterson

Middle/High School Sunday School Meeting in the Youth Room at 10:05 - 10:35 am
Pastor Tim is leading the Middle/High School Sunday School class. The class is currently studying the book Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo.
Adult Sunday School
There will be 3 Sunday School Electives for Adults to choose from:
In September, the Wrestling with Words Sunday school class will be reading and studying John Irving’s novel, A Prayer for Owen Meaney. Owen is a very odd child who becomes a very unusual young man. He is one of “two eleven-year-old boys—best friends—playing a baseball game—and hits a foul ball that kills his best friend’s mother. The boy who hit the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument” (from the dust jacket). This moving and very funny novel is a story of belief and doubt. If you would like to share in the class, please contact Roy Rineer. Short Term Studies is designed to offer participants the opportunity to meet God and to grow through Bible study. Topics such as prayer, commitment, character, etc. will be studied in approximately 6-week sessions. Making use of study booklets which often incorporate Bible lessons with study questions, the class provides a welcoming atmos-phere for those who might be new to a Bible study. The class meets in Fellowship Hall and is facilitated by Carol Rice • 687-7363.
Inquirers Class meets in Asbury 103. We are currently studying Feasts of the Bible. If you have been considering Sunday School, this is a GREAT time for a visit!!! This class is facilitated by Carrie Patterson • 687-7665.
How can young people keep their way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.

Pennies for Missions collected $190.07 in June. To participate, all you have to do is
have each family member place 2 pennies in your soup can for every meal that they eat.
Every penny collected will be used to support a mission project of Wesley UMC. On the last
Sunday of each month, please bring your Pennies for Missions can to church so that the
children of Wesley can collect the pennies during the Children’s Lesson. This is a fantastic
opportunity for all of “God’s Children” to support Wesley’s Mission Projects.

Attention Grocery Shoppers!
If you are a grocery shopper at the Strasburg Market Basket, consider picking up a grocery card from the table in the Epworth Room to take with you when you do your weekly food shopping. For every $25 you spend, the Market Basket marks the card. When the card is full, it is worth $15 for our church’s general fund - an easy, great way to support our church financially! When your card is full, just put it in Lily Williams’ mailbox.
Thank you to the Market Basket for continuing to support us with this venture!
Thank you, shoppers of the Market Basket, who utilize your grocery cards for your purchases.
