NEW CONSTRUCTION CUSTOM HOMES REMODELING ADDITIONS

Northville Central School District

by Kathy DoughertySuperintendent of Schools

Last month the NYS Assembly and Senate both passed versions of a bill that would mandate that school district Committees on Special Education consider the “home life and family background” of special education students when deciding whether to place their students in a public school setting or underwrite the costs of private school placements. Superintendents of Schools and Boards of Education have consistently voiced their strong opposition to the onerous burdens already placed upon school districts by the hundreds of unfunded mandates currently in place. To add to that burden by approving this bill is to exemplify why our schools are struggling just to maintain a basic level of programs and services. The disregard our legislators have shown for the state’s school districts, their students and taxpayers by passing this bill is astounding. It appears that the continuing public outcry against unfunded mandates was not sufficient to dissuade our legislators from bowing to the pressure of a very small minority of the public who sponsored this legislation, the basis of which is intended to deliberately segregate special education students from their mainstreamed classmates. As a long-time educator with a special needs family member who was successfully educated in a mainstreamed setting, I can attest to the importance of eligible special needs students being included in a regular education setting with all appropriate supports being provided. I have also taught in such settings as well as administered programs where this was the norm, and know that ALL students benefit from such programmatic design when it is well-crafted, carefully implemented and properly supervised. The fact that our society expects its schools to raise their standards of student and staff performance while simultaneously imposing aid cuts, restrictions on tax levy increases and new mandates such as this, that are educationally and sociologically unsound and unproven, is mind-boggling to say the least. Citizens who are concerned about this latest unfunded mandate are urged to contact Governor Cuomo, implore him to reject this poorly conceived bill and allow district Committees on Special Education to retain the right to make these decisions where and as they should be made; that is, at the CSE table, without the imposition of artificially-derived constraints that benefit no one except the private schools.

held a first annual Summer Cocktail Party on Friday July 13 at Lanzi’s on the Lake. The attendance exceeded our expectations with

over 200 interested permit holders and community members in attendance. Our attorney from Hodgson Russ and government affairs consultant from Bolton St Johns provided updates on the current issues and SPC Board members answered questions and listened to concerns throughout the evening. We will be sure to plan for an even larger attendance next year. The SPC would like to thank all those who attended and those who contributed but where unable to attend for their continued support. We would also like to recognize the following businesses for helping to make the fundraiser a success:

The second annual Redneck Cocktail Party has been scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Sport Island Pub. We depend on the generous contributions from those with the common interest of protecting our way of life and property values around the Great Sacandaga Lake. We rely not only on the strong support of front-lot and back-lot permit holders, but also on business owners and non-permit holders who all have a vested interest in

I’m planning on buying a home that was built prior to 1978, should I be concerned aboutlead and lead base paint? Many houses and apartments built before 1978 have paint that contains lead (called lead-based paint). Lead from paint, chips and dust can pose serious health hazards if not taken care of properly.

Federal law requires that individuals receive certain information before renting or buying a pre-1978 housing: LANDLORDS must disclose known information on lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards before leases take effect. Leases must include a disclosure form about lead based paint. SELLERS must disclose known information on lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards before selling a house. Sales contracts must include a disclosure form about lead-based paint. Buyers have up to ten days to check for lead hazards. Where lead is found. In general, the older your home, the more likely it has lead-based paint. Many homes built before 1978 have lead-based paint. The federal government banned lead-based paint from housing in 1978. Some states stopped its use even earlier. Lead can be found: In homes in the city, country or suburbs. In apartments, single- family homes, and both private and public housing. Inside and outside of the house

In soil around a home. Soil can pick up lead from exterior paint, or other sources such as past use of leaded gas in cars and children playing in yards can ingest or inhale lead dust. Household dust. Dust can pick up lead from deteriorating lead-based paint or from soil tracked into a home. Drinking water. Your home might have plumbing with lead or lead solder. Old painted toys and furniture.Food and liquids stored in lead crystal or lead glazed pottery. Hobbies that use lead, such as making pottery or stained glass or refinishing furniture.Folk remedies that contain lead, such as “greta” and “azarcon” used to treat an upset stomach. If you suspect that your house has lead hazards, you can get your home checked in one of two ways, or both. A paint inspection tells you the lead content of every different type of painted surface in your home. It won’t tell you whether the paint is a hazard or how you should deal with it. A risk assessment tells you if there are any sources of serious lead exposure (such as peeling paint and lead dust). It also tells you what actions

to take to address these hazards. Have qualified professionals do the work. There are standards in place for certifying lead-based paint professionals to ensure the work is done safely, reliably and effectively. Contact the National Lead Information Center (NLIC) for a list of contacts in your area. Trained professionals use a range of methods when checking your home, including: Visual inspection of paint condition and location. A portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) machine. Lab tests of paint samples. Surface dust tests. Note: Home test kits for lead are available, but studies suggest that they are not always accurate. Consumers should not rely on these tests before doing renovations or to assure safety. For more information you can visit epa.gov/lead. Information provided by Thomas J. Real Estate, Inc. Thomas J. SUN SENSE More than one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the National Cancer Institute. The good news is that skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. The sun sends out ultraviolet rays (UV-A and UV-B) which we cannot see. Long-term, unprotected exposure to the UV rays causes up to 90 percent of all skin cancer. Sunburned or tanned skin is actually damaged skin, according to the New York State Department of Health. Before you head outside, take these few simple steps to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays: Schedule outside activities for early mornings or late afternoon. If possible, avoid the hours of

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest. If you must be out during these hours, stay in the shade as much as possible or use an umbrella or tent for artificial shade. Cover-up when in the sun. Wear wide-brimmed hats that shade the face, scalp, neck and ears. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes that are rated to block UV-A and UV-B rays. Use sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, and reapply at least every 2 hours or more if you are in the water or sweating. Use sunscreen stick or lip-balm on sensitive areas such as lips, ears, nose, hands and feet.Don’t use tanning booths or beds. Their UV rays are up to 12X greater than the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Institute, clothing is your single most effective form of UV protection. However, not all materials protect the same. For example, cotton, linen and silks do not filter out all UV rays. Synthetic and semi-synthetic materials provide the greatest sun protection. Many manufacturers are now providing clothes that are made to protect from UV rays. Look for the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) label. The number on the tag indicates what fraction of UV rays can penetrate the fabric. You can increase your clothes UPF by using an additive such as Rit Sun Guard in your wash. It will protect your clothing for up to 20 washes inexpensively. Boy Scouts of America clothing, hats and

sunglasses now hold the UPF seal. So be prepared and be in good company! With just a few moments of prevention, you can safely enjoy the outdoor summer weather with friends and family. For more information on skin cancer prevention, contact your health care provider, the National Cancer Institute 1-800-4-CANCER (www.cancer.gov), or call HealthLink Littauer at 736-1120. You can e-mail us at [email protected], see our website at www.nlh.org, or visit our wellness center at 213 Harrison Street Ext. in Johnstown, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. We’re your community health & wellness service of Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home.

Edinburg United Methodist Church

The Edinburg United Methodist Women hosted a salad supper on May 23. Church ladies from around the lake attended the supper by invitation and enjoyed many wonderful salads and a program presented by Belinda Gould on HELO HAITI.org., an orphanage in La Caye, Haiti. We hope to repeat the salad supper next year. In June, we held a very successful strawberry festival. On July 21, we hosted a white elephant sale in the church pavilion from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Refreshments were sold. On August 25 we will hold a corn harvest supper from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Edinburg Firehouse on North Shore Rd. All are welcome.

TOPS NY 1005 Northville TOPS is not about dieting or selling you a specific food plan. It’s about giving real people the support and tools they need to make lasting lifestyle changes that make sense for them. That said, TOPS does strongly recommend two different healthy eating plans—the Food Exchange System and MyPlate. Ask your personal healthcare professional to advise you on a food plan that will work best for you. We, at TOPS NY 1005 Northville, meet every week on Tuesdays at the Bradt building for support and camaraderie! Weigh in is from 5-5:30 with the meeting starting soon after. We welcomed two new members to our chapter... Anna Canfield from Edinburg and Cindy King from Northville! It is always nice to have new faces added to our group!! We celebrated the following people from our chapter..... Our KOPS Biggest loser was Cathe Bard. Other losers included Cookie Utting, Barb Ille, Nancy Bassett, Pat Wilcox, and Terry Poulin.... Six weeks with no gain...Terry Poulin and Cathe Bard

Our TOPS Biggest Loser was Ginger Driscoll. Other losers included Anna Canfield, Arden Detweiller, Bev Morgan, Billiejo Vrooman, Cindy King, Hadley Jacobs, Helen Tooley, Judy Frasier, Tom Utting and Missy Kellum. At one of our meetings this month, Cathe Bard went over different labels on cans and we looked at the sodium content. Helen Harrington looked at pasta labels and showed us a sample of deviled eggs and guacamole ....Helen Tooley talked about portion control, showing us samples of low calorie crackers and cheese.... She also showed us different serving plates and gave us segmented plates to take home. A great meeting for sure! Feel free to stop in and visit our meeting (one is free) and for more information, call Nancy Bassett @ www.tops.org on the web. “See you lighter”.

Protect Your Home from Thieves While on Vacation

July and August are peak months for residential burglaries because so many residents are vacationing and away from their homes for extended periods of time. “It’s important for homeowners to take steps to help protect their home and possessions before departing,” says Allstate New York spokesperson Jaclyn Darrohn. Allstate shares the following tips with homeowners to help them protect their homes this

summer:· Make it appear as though you are at home. Keep the house well lit and consider placing staggered timers on different lights, both inside and outside the house. Make sure that outside lights are out of reach of burglars. Keep blinds or curtains in their usual position · Ask a trusted neighbor to lend a hand. Arrange to have mail, packages and newspapers picked up regularly. Make arrangements for the lawn to be mowed. If your car will be parked outside for more than a week, ask a friend to change its position a few times. Tell only people you know and trust that you are going away · Keep valuables well hidden and under lock and key. Expensive jewelry should be stored in a safety deposit box at the bank or hidden in a room other than the bedroom · Create deterrents to entry. Install strong frames, locks/deadbolts, and alarms on windows, doors, garages and sheds (tools stored in sheds can be used to break into homes). Also, remove spare keys and openers from outside the house· Safeguard personal documents. When possible, do not leave personal documents in your home office or desk, as burglars will know to look for them there. Put critical documents in a lock box elsewhere in the house. Keep copies of important documents at another location, such as a relative’s home.· Disconnect hackers. Turn off your computer and disconnect it from the Internet. If you save personal information on your computer, make sure it is difficult to access. You don’t want a hacker at work while you are on vacation.

TOPS 776 Northville Welcome back Betty Palmeteer! It is so nice to have you join us on our successful journey to our Goal Weights! Last month, we had some very important discussions about ideas that we brought back from SRD. The one thing that really made an impact with me is the fact that we need to retrain our thinking from negative to positive. It is NOT “if” we can reach our goal and lose weight but rather “when”. We have to picture ourselves losing weight and truly believing we can because we “all” can! Once we lose the weight, we have to be willing to work at keeping it off through KOPS! All the negative thoughts we have all put into our heads over the years have to be removed so that only the positive ones are left and there is no more room for negativity. WE CAN DO IT IF WE WORK TOGETHER AND HELP EACHOTHER! Our TOPS Loser of the Month was Clara Sue. Congratulations Clara! Quarterly Perfect Attendance (April, May & June) was reached by Jeannine, Marie, Jane and Georgia. Way to go Ladies! Carmen reached her 20 lb. weight loss in April and her 30 lb. weight loss in June! Looking good! Losers of the Month were Clara Sue, Carmen, Jeannine, Laurel, Peg, Terry, Marie and Jane. Keep it up! Remember TOPS members, “It works it you work it.” It is not “if” but “when”.

CHAMBER ANNOUNCES A NEW GALLERY EXHIBIT

“A Family of Artists” by Bradford Smith

The Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Art Gallery, located at 2 North Main Street, Gloversville, is hosting a new art exhibit by Bradford Smith and family. “A Family of Artists” will be displayed in the Gallery through August 31 and is open for viewing Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Bradford Smith entered the world of photography at nine years old, helping his grandfather, Joseph Dunlop, in his darkroom. Since Bradford’s first published photograph at 12 years old, his path has taken him from a studio in New York City with Ann Whitney, of Harper’s Bazaar, to General Electric in Schenectady, as their largest independent photography contractor. Now in his eighth decade of photography, Bradford takes his love of the camera cross-country. Also included in the exhibit, is artwork by his grandfather, Joseph Dunlop, a photographer mentored by George Eastman; his uncle, David Lithgow, a famous Native American painter; and his great-grandmother, Minnie Jansen, also a painter. Bradford extends an open invitation to an artist’s reception on Aug. 17, 2012 from 5 pm-8 pm. The Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Art Gallery is free of admission and open to the public. For more information please call the Fulton County Chamber at 518-725-0641 or e-mail [email protected].

“Si-yit,” she instructed. “Si-yit.” Despite my dog’s predilection to please, Dolly didn’t move a muscle while continuing to look earnestly into Shelby’s face. “Doesn’t your dog know that command?” Shelby asked me. “I don’t think the dog knows what you’re saying,” June responded. “What AH you saying?” And thus began an extraordinary reunion with two dear friends: June from Boston and Shelby from Kentucky. They started out as my parents’ friends many years ago when they were all neighbors wintering in Florida. I got to know them somewhat when I visited my parents, and later they became my eyes and ears when my parents started to fail. June called me to report that my mom was in the emergency room because of numbness in her arm; Shelby called to say my mom had fallen in her bathroom. And there were dozens of calls in between. During the 18 months I spent caring for my parents, these two women provided exceptional

emotional support long distance. When I felt like no one else cared or remembered, they did. They kept me grounded during a caregiving experience for which I was ill-prepared. Within a short span after the death of my parents, they both lost their husbands, and I tried to reciprocate with the same warmth and concern they had shown me. After collectively losing four people, only three of us remain. We regularly exchange phone calls and cards and, in the last eight years, have gotten together four times despite the geographic challenges. At first, it was our losses and memories that held us together. But as time went on, we shared intimate stories and created a new family unit. They give me the precious opportunity to be with two women who love me like a friend and a daughter; women who enable me to once again feel unconditionally loved. And whom I love so very much. Our most recent reunion was at my camp on Great Sacandaga Lake the end of June. We boated, we laughed, we cried, we ate, we drank, we sang,

we confided, we reminisced. But the highlight of the trip for Shelby was the trip into Northville to shop at the Northville 5 & 10, formerly J.J. Newberry’s back in the day. Shelby had fond memories of Newberry’s in Kentucky when she was a kid, and when she heard there was one in Northville, it became her personal Mecca. We stopped traffic on Main Street to take a photo of her under the trademark red and white striped awning. Upon entering, she oohed and aahed at the tin ceiling and wood floor. And eventually wound her way to the check out, with a handful of headbands with big black bows, one for each of us.

“Do y’all have a parrot?” she inquired with all sincerity of the clerk. “A what?” Alberta responded. Shelby went on to describe the Newberry’s of her youth and the parrot

(aptly named Polly, of course) who always wanted a cracker. Those in line behind us were patient enough to allow the story to be told in its entirety in Shelby’s slow Southern drawl; there were even a few chuckles to be heard. June, in the meantime, spotted a newspaper

clipping about the store – lodged under the

TONY HOFFMAN’SPlexiglas counter. She asked if there were any way we could make a photocopy. In response, the clerk unscrewed the countertop for us, directing us to Allen and Palmer where there is a copier. (Who knew?) June marched it down the street, where she had three photocopies made for Shelby, who couldn’t have been more pleased. And as we were checking out of that hardware store, Shelby couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Do y’all have a parrot?” Clerks and customers in that store were then also privy to Shelby’s childhood memories of feeding crackers to Polly at J.J. Newberry’s. Shelby was soon disappointed once more to learn that Rite Aid didn’t have a parrot either, although that clerk was ready to join our search party for such a creature. June and Shelby chatted all the way back to my camp about how pleasurable it was to shop in a small town with small shops where clerks try to help and really want to serve you – even though there were no parrots to be found. That night, we wore our black headbands with bows as we sat on my deck under the stars – the same stars that shine on Kentucky and Boston. And on parrots everywhere, wherever they may be hiding. When June announced the next morning that it was time to stot packing the ka, I was filled with sadness that they were leaving me. But then I laughed out loud when Shelby told her, “I don’t know what you’re saying.” And thus ended an extraordinary reunion with two dear friends: June from Boston and Shelby from Kentucky. Patricia A. Nugent lives in Edinburg and is the author of the book, They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad, available at the Adirondack Country Store in Northville, which doesn’t have a parrot either.

ApproachingEvent Benefits Local

NOAH Program (Needy or Alone and Hungry)

The Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Peck’s Lake Protective Association (PLPA) want to remind the community about the Third Annual Peck’s Lake Challenge Sprint Triathlon to be staged at Sunrise Bay on Peck’s Lake in Fulton County, NY on Saturday, August 4. The event is comprised of a ½ mile swim, a 9 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. “We have less than one month until the Peck’s Lake Triathlon and have 102 athletes registered toward our 175 cut-off,” states Gina DaBiere-Gibbs, Director of Tourism. “We encourage interested participants to register now since we only have 73 spots available. Typically the race has sold out two weeks prior to the event closing registration before the August 1 deadline. Last year we had participants from seven states, Canada, and various regions of New York.” Peck’s Lake is located within the Towns of Bleecker and Johnstown in Fulton County, NY and inside the Adirondack State Park’s “Blue Line.” The Peck’s Lake Challenge swim course will begin at Sunrise Bay on the north side of the lake. After the swim, triathletes will begin a rolling and challenging bike ride along North Shore Road and proceed to the lake’s South Shore Road and back to Sunrise Bay. After finishing the bike race, athletes will run on North Shore Road and again return to Sunrise Bay for the triathlon finish. Entry fee is $50 per racer for registration. There will be a staggered start at the swim portion

It has been quite a busy summer and we have a number of activities planned through Oct. It has been nice this summer, as many businesses have sponsored their own independent events on the lake. This makes the Great Sacandaga Lake the place to be! The Sacandaga Protection Committee Cocktail Fundraiser held at Lanzi’s on Friday night was a great success. The restaurant was overflowing with people who are concerned with our lake. It takes many people to organize a fund raiser such as this. On behalf of GSLBA and the SPC we would like to thank the following businesses for their time and generous donations. Adirondack Country Store Allen and Palmer Brownell Construction Brownell Lumber Company Captain Nauti’s Sunset Grill Edinburg Marina Edinburg Newsletter Fancher Construction Fuel-n-Food Fullers Four Corners Store I Go Inn Lanzi’s on the Lake North Country Florist Sacandaga Outdoor Equipment Saratoga Winery Waterfront Contracting & Dive Service Inc. The Tagged Fish Contest- Two more fish were caught in the past two weeks and five fish have been caught so far this year. The fish tags this year are green. You can bring your tagged fish into Fullers Four Corners or Fuel n Food. The Dam Tie Up is Aug. 11 with a rain date of Aug. 18. Scott Price is providing music and the event will start at noon. Event tees will be sold that day. Sand Island Party is September 8 with a rain date of Sept. 15. Music will be provided by Permagrin. Chowderfest is October 6 at Captain Nauti’s. The Redneck Cocktail Party is October 18 at the Sport Island Pub. Mark these events on your busy calendar now ! Our next meeting will be July 24 at 6:00 p.m. at Captain Nauti’s. See you there !

Young Eagles Flight Rally

Area young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, August 4th, as Experimental Aircraft Association EAA Chapter 602 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Fulton County Airport. The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program was launched in 1992, Volunteer EAA pilots have flown

more than 1.4 million young people who reside in more than 90 countries. “Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight Rally,” said Doug Sterling, spokesman for the event. “We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation.” Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight. Following the flight, each young person, will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The Logbook is also accessible on the web at www.youngeagles.org. Along with flight rallies, EAA members also fly Young Eagles on an individual basis. Each pilot volunteers their time and aircraft so the flights can be provided free of charge for interested young people. Those attending the flight rally on August 4th are asked to come to Fulton County Airport, starting at 9am to register for their flight. Flights will begin at 9:30am, with registration closing at 2pm. Parent or guardian must attend with child. Additional information about EAA and the EAA Young Eagles program is available on the Internet. Access to EAA’s Home Page is available at www.eaa.org. The Young Eagles web page is www.youngeagles.org .

Another month has entered the history books. It seemed like the summer was slow in coming but now the ‘back to school’ sales are appearing in the newspapers. Use the rest of the summer wisely! Great Sacandaga Lake Patrols: As everyone knows, governments do not have an abundance of funds in their coffers. The lake community has the additional burden of late payment of assessments to the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District (more to follow, below) as the counties pursue their legal right to litigate each decision. In January 2012 the Fulton County Sheriff announced because of funding limitations, he had to select between road patrols and lake patrols. The discussion faded as would be expected during the winter but on June 28, 2012, the Great Sacandaga Lake climbed onto the front page of The Daily Gazette under the headline: “Sink or Swim: Many concerned for safety after budget cuts force sheriff to pull daily boat patrols”. On June 30, 2012, The Daily Gazette published an editorial drawing from the initial report: “Be flexible with Sacandaga Lake patrols”. The editorial cautioned that: “Safe roads may properly be the top priority of a law enforcement agency in these parts, but it can’t be pursued to the detriment of safety everywhere else. And that includes a popular destination like Great Sacandaga Lake, where hundreds of people routinely take to watercraft on busy weekend days.”

Sheriff Lorey of Fulton County predicted that: “Lack of a presence of law enforcement anywhere is not a good thing and I think once people realize there are less law enforcement capabilities out there, they’re going to drink more and operate recklessly.” In January, Sheriff Lorey hoped “… to have the size of the sheriff’s office road patrols put back to its usual levels and then we’ll be able to do things like that.” Recently published reports did not indicate that other law enforcement agencies intended to increase their patrols to cover the large portion of the lake in Fulton County. We believe it is important to maintain patrols on the Great Sacandaga. We also believe that individual boaters need to exercise more personal responsibility for the safe operation of their boats. The Great Sacandaga Lake Association trusts that this issue can be resolved as there appears to be lake-wide agreement! Please keep your eye on the lake and help support a restoration of services. Please report any problems to your local law enforcement agency. District Board Approves Plan to Tax the Counties:

Short stories sometimes become long stories. Without the assistance of a flow chart, here in an abbreviated fashion (1) power companies believed they were assessed too much by the Regulating District, (2) the District believed that counties benefiting from the dam should pay a portion of the assessment, (3) on May 10, the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division sided with the District but added that the District should also charge the State! We will have to await further legal action because the power companies (Step #1) believe that they should recover monies which they believe they paid in excess of the final approved assessment. This would be entertaining if it didn’t have such an impact on school and property taxes in the communities around the lake. Let’s solve the problem! Permit Holder Appeal: We previously reported the appeal brought by two property owners seeking to modify the permit size which had been previously granted them on two separate pieces of property. In the July meeting, the District Board decided not to

take action on the request. Some members of the public were concerned that a successful appeal would signal a series of claims by other permit holders who were unhappy with permits granted them in previous years. GSLA Annual Membership Meeting: The GSLA Annual Membership Meeting will be held on August 10, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Edinburg Fire Hall. The tentative agenda includes an update on GSLA operations, the Sacandaga Protection Committee, the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District as well as a progress report on the soon-to-be-opened NEW Batchellerville Bridge. Hope that you can clear your schedule to hear about your neighbors on the lake. NYS Safe Boating: The GSLA has completed two of the three scheduled FREE boater safety classes held on the Great Sacandaga. The sessions were well attended with the last session …. oversubscribed! The classes are provided as a membership benefit and help save members approximately $60 per person. We believe the classes are ‘family friendly’. Enjoy the summer and safe boating. We will see at the annual membership meeting!

2012 marks the 200th Anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812. This two-year war (1812-1814) was something the United States fell into almost by accident due to a struggle between France and Great Britain that started in 1803. Thus the Napoleonic Wars kept Europe in an uproar with both France & Britain confiscating American ships at sea. The Royal Navy of England was losing 2500 deserters a year. Britain would stop American ships looking for deserters; then “mistakenly” seize American born seamen. This practice continued for several years along with keeping the Native Americans stirred up in the Northwest Territory. Finally in 1812 the US had had enough and once again declared war on Great Britain; narrowly missing declaring war on France also. It was a far-flung war with the fighting on land stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes of Canada. Sea battles spread from the Pacific Ocean to the shores of England. This would be the last war in which seamen boarded enemy ships and fought with cutlasses.

As in many wars the War of 1812 was very controversial. The New England States were so against it they almost seceded from the Union. In New York State most of the fighting occurred along the NY-Canadian border at Sacketts Harbor in Jefferson County, Fort Niagara in Niagara county and Plattsburgh Bay on Lake Champlain.Local records were very scarce at that time in our town’s history and thus far I have identified 14 men from Edinburgh who did their part in the war. Four of them are buried in Edinburg cemeteries and one in Stony Creek. Ananias and John Ackley came to Edinburgh as young children from Coxsackie in Dutchess County in 1801 with their father Benjamin; step mother, Eunice and other siblings. The family settled about a mile southwest of Beecher Hollow on what we now know as Sinclaire Road.John and Ananias both enlisted in the War of 1812. After the war John married Phebe Hill, daughter of John and Betsey Hill of Edinburgh Hill. John and Phebe settled on the Ackley home place to raise their family. John died on Sept. 17, 1878 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 17 days. Phebe died Mar. 28, 1880 at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 4 days.

They were buried in Beecher Hollow Cemetery and re-interred in the Edinburg cemetery in 1928 with the creation of the Sacandaga Reservoir. Ananias Ackley married Sally E. Fuller, daughter of Thomas and Lucy Burt Fuller of Edinburgh and Stony Creek. Ananias and Sally settled in Stony Creek prior to 1823 to raise their ten children. Ananias died Jan. 8, 1876 at the age of 87 years and 10 months. Sally died Mar. 24, 1867 at the age of 69 years and 10 months. Both are buried in the Goodnow Cemetery in Stony Creek. Veteran John Brown died in Ballston. Nothing more is known. Daniel Buckalow moved to Fulton County and died there. No other records. John Gordon was one of Gen. Porter’s aids. This John was probably the son of John Gordon of Revolutionary War fame. The Gordon family’s homestead was about a mile north of Batchellerville on the east side of the Sacandaga River. I have found no evidence of what happened to John Gordon after the war. Wm. Hill moved to Orleans County and died there. Ephram Potter moved to the Black River country of NYS and died there.

James Rhodes had come from Dutchess County to Edinburgh as a child. He married Susan Simpson, daughter of Rev. War veteran James and Mercy Grinnell Simpson in the late 1820’s. James and Susan raised their family in a homestead not far from the Hope and Edinburgh town lines up what we now call the King Road off Tennantville Road. Susan died Nov. 23, 1869 at the age of 74 years and 11 months. James died Apr. 15, 1864 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 9 days. Both are buried in the Clarkville Cemetery. Nathaniel Robinson married Mary Ann (Polly) Simpson, another daughter of James and Mercy Simpson in 1805. Nathaniel and Polly settled very near the Hope town line near Polly’s sister and family, Susan and James Rhodes. They had a son and six daughters. Polly died June 29, 1823 at the age of 38 years, quite possibly the result of child birth.Nathaniel married widow, Laura Wells in 1829. They had one daughter. Nathaniel-a farmer his entire life- died Feb. 28, 1870 at the age of 89 years, 5 months, 21 days and is buried in Clarkville Cemetery. Solomon Scott moved to the West after the war; nothing more is known. Wm. Van Avery died in Waterford, Saratoga County.Orderly Sergeant Silas Washburn also moved to the West. Myron White was a farmer living on Edinburgh Hill. His first wife Aesah “Polly” died in 1834 at the age of 35. His 2nd wife Clarissa died in 1871 at the age of 69. Myron died July 30, 1858 at the age of 72. Clarissa and Myron’s son Myron Jr. was in the Civil War; dying at the Armory Square Hospital in Washington, DC in 1865 at the age of 23. Myron, Polly, Clarissa and Myron Jr. are buried in the Edinburgh Hill Cemetery. Stephen White died somewhere in NYS but don’t know where. Daniel Washburn and Ely Davis with their teams of

horses transported the enlistees of 1812 to Waterford in southern Saratoga county which was the troop gathering point for our area. An interesting place in town during the war was “Liberty Hill”. On North Shore Rd. just north between Norma Porteus’ home and the lake is a high point of land. In 1812 this spot would have been easily seen from the Sacandaga River. On this point was placed an American flag and the site was called “Liberty Hill” showing the town’s support for all the men serving in the war--a bit like an 1812 version of “tying a yellow ribbon ‘round the old oak tree”.

Congratulations to our Graduating Northville Seniors for their outstanding academic achievements.

An Eagle Eye on the Nurse’s Officeby Mrs. Karen Gill

Summer is already halfway through and the new school year is quickly approaching. Now is a great time to check with your child’s pediatrician to verify that their immunizations are up to date. Also, if your child is entering Pre-K or Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 7th or 10th grade they must have a physical on file at the school as per NYS Education Law. If your child has had a physical within the last year (9/6/11-9/6/12) you can ask their pediatrician to fax the physical to the school at 863-2564. If they haven’t had a physical, schedule one as soon as possible. Don’t forget, if your child needs any medications at school they will need a Doctor’s order too. Besides regular medications that need a prescription to fill, your child will need an order for antibiotic or hydrocortisone ointment, cough drops, sunscreen, insect repellant, and Tylenol or Motrin. Please take the time to get these things done before the school year begins. I hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their summer. Try not to spend your days in front of the television. Try to get outside, have some fun, and get some exercise. Don’t forget to use sunscreen and stay hydrated. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone back at school in September!

An Open Letter to the Residents and Property Owners in the Edinburg

School District, For almost 80 years the residents of Edinburg residing in the old district 10 of the Edinburg School System have paid their school taxes to the Broadalbin-Perth School District! This old “hand shake” agreement has resulted in a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars that should have been paid to YOUR school district. When the lake was formed in the early 1930s and before a bridge was built connecting the south shore area to the rest of Edinburg an informal agreement was reached allowing the students of Edinburg’s district 10 to be educated at Fish House School until the bridge was completed. For some reason lost in time, the students did not return to the Edinburg School. As the years passed and districts merged (Fish House to North Broadalbin to Broadalbin) Edinburg’s district 10 continued to pay school taxes first to Broadalbin and then to

Broadalbin-Perth. No formal transfer or vote was ever taken and no legal documents exist requiring Edinburg’s district 10 to be included in Broadalbin-Perth. About three years ago it became apparent to some residents that lived in district 10 (the properties from Russian Road south to the town and county line) that this was happening. Petitions were gathered from more than 100 of the 135 landowners and were hand delivered along with documentation of the history of Edinburg’s district 10 to the office of the Commissioner of Education for the State of New York in Albany. Without a thorough review of our case the request was turned down by the assistant commissioner as “the loss of district 10 money would be harmful to the district and students of Broadalbin-Perth”. What about the harm caused by the loss of money to the students and school district of Edinburg to which we rightfully belong? We live in Edinburg, pay taxes to Edinburg , support Edinburg and want our future school tax dollars (approximately one hundred thousand dollars annually) to support our Edinburg school!!

We are not giving up and need your help. Please support your Edinburg School District by contacting the Commissioner of Education, Dr. John King, Jr. phone: 518-474-3852, email: [email protected] or Assistant Commissioner Charles Szuberla, email: [email protected], and demand that in the future the school tax dollars that legally belong to the Edinburg School District by paid to the Edinburg School District!!!!! Greetings Folks How often have we said or heard the following; Time Flys! Where has the time gone? or Time Marches on!. If you subscribe to cable TV you get a cable box and a remote. Some of the features offered are start-over, pause and fast forward. What would our personal lives be like if we could control time? No doubt there have been circumstances in our life that we wish had been different. One would select the start-over feature.( a clean slate). Another one would select the pause feature.( contented and comfortable) And some would be drawn to the fast-forward feature (frustrated with life) Oh! if life was so easy as pushing a TV remote button!! How well we know that life is much more complex! The Bible has much to say about time. A well known portion of scripture is found in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven”. Psalm 139:16 “All the days ordained for me were

written in your book before one of these came to be”. It does not matter what “time” or “season” your life is in. The Holy Scriptures make clear that God wants to be involved in our lives. God does not want us to remain in the same place or condition if we choose to “start-over”. Gods’ starting over is described in the book of 2 Corinthians “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he/she is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Edinburg Bible Chapel welomes all to come and hear Gods’ life changing message. It does not matter the “time or season” you are in. What’s important is to let Jesus Christ be in our “Time or Season”. We would love to have you come and worship with us. The Edinburg Historical Society will be holding their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 21st at 7pm, in the Edinburg Community Center. This meeting will feature Edinburg residents, Gary and Ann Larsen, who will share with us their talents in photography and art. Gary is a renown photographer who has traveled throughout the United States and Canada. His subjects are drawn from nature and focus on landscapes, structures and flowers. His photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life Magazine and selected for exhibition at many fine arts centers including the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, and the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. Ann has painted and exhibited at many renown United States sites including the Grand Canyon in Arizona and most recently the Grand Teton National Park. The Larsens will be bringing photographs and paintings and talk about their travels, exhibitions and work. On July 21st, we celebrated our 21st annual Historic Edinburg Day. The event was a great success and we thank all our participants and volunteers for their time and talents at this annual event. We would also like to note that our annual raffle this year features a beautiful Amish Rocker. Tickets are for sale at our meetings, from members and at our events. Proceeds from our annual raffle help to support our Society’s events and programs. Your help with our raffle is much appreciated. I left the house early today so I could write my article. I threw on a little makeup , put my hair up in a ponytail and was out the door. I was looking forward to a quiet half hour to work. It is Monday and that did not happen. I think we all have the same Mondays! My computer would not turn on and then the phone started to ring. It is amazing how quickly your day can turn around when you do not have the right tools. We are so dependent upon our technology. I envisioned a repeat of two weeks ago when we had Athe pleasure of@ no phones in the office for a week straight. All calls were forwarded to my cell phone and I thought I would go insane ! I had forgotten what it was like to be woken up in the wee hours of the morning because someone flushed their toilet and they had no water. It is a tough summer for a lot of people. Many homes with dug wells, or older drilled wells are running dry. The surface water that feeds these wells has dried up. While we all enjoyed the mild winter, we are paying for the lack of snow right now. Many towns are placing restrictions on water usage and lawns are turning crispy and brown. We have seen an increase in the request for irrigation wells. We have also talked with a number of first time homeowners who bought their house within the last six months with no water. These wells were not properly tested on a home inspection. Buyer beware ....if you are buying a home get the well tested by a reputable well company. High temperatures, no water and unexpected expenses can really stress a person. Given what we are dealing with there are a few things we would like you to remember. Check your toilets and outside faucets. You will be amazed at how much water is wasted on a running toilet, split hose or drippy faucet. Water your lawn in the early morning or evening. If you have a pool and you want to fill it from your well; run your pump for short periods of time. You do not have to fill your pool up all at once. If you are not sure if your well can support this; have pool water brought in. Try to focus on your own water usage and not worry about the neighbors. Wells are as individual as we are. Two wells side by side are not always the same and they often perform differently. In most cases, their usage has little impact on your well. If you have questions email us at [email protected]. Bill and I enjoyed talking to so many of you on Friday. We hope to see you at the Anna King Fund Raiser on August 5 at Lanzi=s. See you on the lake and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Wow! It has been quite a summer so far! I do not know about you but we have something going on every weekend until late September. It is crazy! We have to come back to work on Monday to rest and we are working 60 hours a week. Now there is a statement that makes little sense but there is so much to be thankful for in our lives! Thank you to all of you who came out for the Sacandaga Protection Committee Fund raiser on Friday at Lanzi=s. We were overwhelmed by the last minute ticket sales and the great turn out. It was an opportunity to hear, first hand from the legal advisors, about how our money is being spent to protect our lake. People walked out that evening with new friends and some nice door prizes. Thank you to Chris Lanzi and his staff for the wonderful job they did at the event. Given the unexpected number of people who showed up, the Lanzi=s did a great job with the food and service. We are lucky to have such wonderful people in our small community ! Our family has been very community oriented

for generations. While we can not financially support every cause that comes around we believe that people should support those that are closest to their heart and home. On Sunday, August 5 from 2:00-6:00 a benefit will be held for the Anna King Project at Lanzi=s. Anna is a 12 year old girl born and raised in Mayfield with a rare heart condition and needs a heart transplant. Music will be provided by Cleen Street and the Dream Team. The cost is adults $ 15.00 in advance and $ 20.00 at the door; children $ 10.00 in advance and $ 15.00 at the door. This will be a fun filled afternoon with homemade food, desserts. great music and raffle prizes. You can get more information by going to the website: humorhealstheheart.org As you may have noticed by now we have a tendency to burn the candles at both ends.
