Our Kalāheo High School faculty and staff are pre- paring for success this year with our students. Hawaii State Assessment scores from last April show that Kalāheo High School did not meet our Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for Reading and Mathematics, which means the school is now in Restruc- turing status. Interestingly, Kalāheo High School’s Tenth Grade students’ overall scores in Reading Proficiency and Mathematics Proficiency were ABOVE both the complex and the state scores. This is a significant accomplishment. The reason Kalāheo did not meet our AYP goal is because one disaggregated group did not reach the target. This fact under- scores the intent of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). We must ensure that ALL of our students are progressing in their learning. Our Goal remains the same - that all of our students will achieve their grade level stan- dards in all content areas; and our students will graduate from high school on time without the need for remediation. Our mission is to prepare Kalāheo students for college and careers. To that end, we must maintain an environment that supports effective teaching and enables students to be responsible for their own learning. The Dress Code has been refined to encourage students to dress for success and to reduce distractions from learning. Our bell schedule has changed so each teacher meets with each class three times per week. A “Prime Time” procedure for instruc- tion will be utilized which is designed to maximize instructional time. The first twenty minutes of class is Prime Time. Students will be required to be in class on time; tardiness to class will be discouraged. Teachers will begin instruction without interruption. Students who are not in class on time will be marked Tardy. Four or more Tardies will result in Administrative disciplinary consequences. Consequences for violation of the Dress Code and for being tardy to class will begin the week of August 10. Teachers will be reviewing the expectations with their students the first week of August. Kalāheo High School has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) until June 2010, so we must now begin to prepare for the upcoming accredita- tion visit in the Spring of 2010. We want to continue to build an effective parent and community partnership. Our School Community Council is in place to help monitor and provide input to the Kalāheo School Academic and Financial plan and the Accreditation report that will guide our school progress this year and outlines plans for next school year 2010-11. We need and welcome our parent community input and assistance more than ever, so please volunteer your service and expertise in the classroom and participate in our efforts for school improvement. If you are able to help out this school year call our school office (254-7900) to volunteer your service; our PCNC Meg Gammon is the contact person. The Kalāheo High School PTSA welcomes new members for this school year. Kalāheo High School continues our partnership with the Edison Alliance this school year, which is an Educational Consulting organization dedicated to increasing the academic suc- cess of our students. We will be focusing on learning in every classroom; the Edison consultants will provide teacher training and mentoring that will emphasize using effective teaching strate- gies and analyzing and using data to improve instruction. Students in grades nine and ten will be taking monthly Benchmark Assessments that will provide data to indicate each student’s pro- gress in achieving grade level standards in language arts/reading and mathematics (Algebra and Geometry). We hope to see all of our parents, families, and community members coming to our school events and activities and offering assistance when you are able to – we need and appreci- ate your kokua and support Mahalo, Mrs. Susan Hummel, Principal

COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER NEWS

SAT and ACT 2009-2010

JUNIORS are encouraged to begin taking the SAT and/or the ACT. SENIORS who have NOT started taking the SAT or ACT should register for the October test(s). Most colleges and univer-sities require either the ACT with Writing or SAT Reasoning Test. Only SOME colleges and universities require the SAT Subject test. Check with each school individually.

Students may register online (with a credit card) or pick up a regis-tration packet from the College & Career Center, Room H-208 or from their counselor.

Kalaheo High School’s Code is 120143.

Students can send their test scores to four colleges for free and are encouraged to do so. Scores released after the testing dates incur a cost per each release. Fee waivers are available to juniors and seniors who are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Be sure to submit the necessary paperwork with Kalaheo

High School.

SAT Prep Class We are offering our popular SAT Prep classes in both Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. This year we are “selling” spots for BOTH classes beginning Aug. 3,

2009. Our Kalaheo PTSA subsidizes a portion of the prep class, so we can keep the cost down to $75.00

per student. Raymond Karelitz, who teaches our SAT Prep class offers this exact class in the community for

$260 per student. Take advantage now and sign up early! Both classes are limited to the FIRST 30 stu-

dents who register and submit payment. Checks pay-able to: Kalaheo PTSA. Come to H-208 for a regis-

tration form.

Volume 8, Issue 2 August 2009

Freshmen Rule the School About 200 freshmen took over the school at the New Student Orientation on August 3. The purpose of the event is to welcome our new students, assist with their transition to our school, and connect them to current students and teach-ers. About 50 student volunteers attended ten hours of training to prepare for this event.

Orientation day kicked off with a welcome assembly featuring our Mustang Cheerleaders and welcome mes-sages from the principal, counselors, freshmen teachers, and our student body president. Students also learned to sing the alma mater.

After the assembly, student met their advisory teacher and their classmates during orientation group time. Stu-dent facilitators ran ice breakers and games to help new students learn more about each other.

Next, groups met in the gym for the outrageous group games. Students played Oodles of Noodles, Plunger Skateboard, and Towel Ring Toss. With all the excitement and cheers, this was obviously one of the highlights of the day.

Students were also taken on a school tour led by student facilitators. From the College and Career Center to the Library, students learned about the different programs and services offered.

During lunch, students hung out in the cafeteria where they had an opportunity to reunite with old friends and meet new ones. Activities and games were held giving students a chance to win a Jamba Juice gift card or one of the many prizes donated by our teachers.

A fun fest was held in the afternoon with three areas of activities. Wacky Fun was filled with large group cheers, games, and energizers. Students danced the Electric Slide, Macarena, and the Chicken Dance at Groovy Fun. The Bungee Run was a big hit at Carnival Fun. Students also enjoyed the other carnival games where they won cool food prizes and school supplies.

The day ended with the closing assembly in the gym. A slide show was presented to reflect on all the fun they had throughout the day. A class picture was taken to capture the moment.

Upper classmen attended a separate orientation day with an off campus activity. New students explored Kailua town in the Amazing Photo Race. The race took students to hot spots in our neighborhood such as the public library, fire station, and district park. Students even visited Famous Wally Amos at Chip and Cookie where students were treated to a story and a bag of cookies.

Yearbook & ID Picture-Taking August 18-20 during Social Studies classes in the cafeteria.

Picture order forms and information were distributed to students in Advisory.

August 2009 PTSA Newsletter ...from your PTSA & PCNC Page 13

Aloha!

...and welcome or welcome back to Kalaheo!

I am the PCNC: Parent/Community Networking Coordinator for Kalaheo High School and this is my lucky 13th year at Kalaheo. The public schools in Hawaii have one PCNC per school, and we are paid to be “super parents”: to work with the PTSA and encourage other parents to get involved as well.

Usually high school students don’t want their parents hanging around. So the avenues for volunteering are in the evenings and weekends: sports and meetings. A handful of parents have asked to be involved on cam-pus during the week, so I will be having a volunteer coffee for those interested. If you are want to be in-cluded, email me at [email protected], or call me at 236-4230.

Public education needs parents’ support now more than ever. Kalaheo isn’t a perfect school, no school is. But it has fine teachers, staff and administrators who excel at what they do. Both my daughters have gradu-ated from Kalaheo and graduated from mainland universities. Research and experience say it is the par-ents’ influence that most determines their child’s success.

The PTSA and I work hand in hand . Right now we need a treasurer. Rodney will stay until one is found. It’s a great entry position on the board. We’d also like a parent who knows his or her way around sprin-kler system installation for “Make A Difference Day” on Sat., October 24 at 8:30 a.m. to noon on campus. Got a shovel? Rake? Join us! It’s a great way to meet other parents...while your kids are working with kids their own age.

Our monthly PTSA meetings start Sept. 9th at 5:30 p.m. in the Teachers’ Workroom. And check the school’s new website (funded in part by the PTSA): www.kalaheohigh.org.

We encourage you to sign up for escrip online—it means “free money” for Kalaheo and nothing out of your pocket.

MEAL TIME – SCHOOL MEALS SYSTEM

Effective October, 2005, Kalaheo High School implemented Meal Time, a computerized sys-tem for purchasing school meals. All faculty, staff and students will be issued an identification

card with picture, name and barcode with a 4-digit PIN. Everyone will deposit CASH ONLY to the account.

Each person must present his/her ID card to purchase a school meal or ala carte item. No cash will be col-lected on the meal line. The purchase price of the meal or ala carte item is automatically deducted from the account when the ID is scanned by the lunch clerk.

Direct deposits into your Meal Time account is done in the cafeteria every morning from 7:00 to 7:50 am. These deposits are activated and the account can be accessed immediately.

A Meal Time Drop Box is located at the administrative office to submit deposits throughout the school day. No live deposits are conducted at the admin office. Processing of the Drop Box deposits will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for all deposits made by morning recess of that day. The deposit will be ac-tive in the account on the next school day.

Meal Time one-day passes will be available before school in the cafeteria and recess and lunch in the admin-istrative office. There is a limit of three (3) opportunities. The purchase of a replacement ID is mandatory for continued Meal Time access.

Due to the rising costs of the school meal program, the minimum deposit will be:

Students $5.00

Adults $20.00 Effective: August 31, 2009
