REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
“…For today the Virgin Mother of God
was assumed into heaven as the beginning
and image of your Church’s coming to perfection
and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people;
rightly you would not allow her to see the corruption
of the tomb since from her own body
she marvelously brought forth
your incarnate Son, the Author of all life.”
These words begin the Preface of the Mass, today. They
reflect the reason for this celebration as well as the
anticipation of what is ahead for all Christians who
diligently embrace the Cross of Christ and follow in His
footsteps. Over the centuries, Christians have debated
what the appropriate attitude should be towards the
Blessed Mother. Some have claimed that many
worshipped her because they do not understand her
important role in the Divine Plan. Others have claimed . . .

Reflections on the Readings for this Sunday
… that she should hold no place of esteem because she was only human, failing to recognize her position as the New Eve and as the Theotokos. These two diametrically opposed positions leave Mary’s great “Yes” unheard and unappreciated in our world today. It is with wisdom and humility that Holy Mother the Church celebrates the life of the Virgin and places before all of humanity the model of perfection, Mary the Theotokos. It is Mary, Jesus’ mother and ours, whom God created. In His wisdom, like Eve, she was created without sin. Unlike Eve, she passes the test of the Divine and receives the reward that God has in store for those who love Him and follow Him. She navigates her life, with it joys and sorrows, always with an unwavering faith. Her faith is firm and her heart and mind are pure – formed in love and always acting with love.
In today’s first reading from the Book of Revelation, Mary is depicted in two forms. The first reference is obscured as she is depicted as “the Ark of the Covenant”. This strange title and vision reveal her role as “Theotokos”. Mary, a teenager, will conceive the Word Incarnate – God, Himself. Within her body, she will carry and nurture the Divine One made man. She has the highest form of manna, Aaron’s staff, and the Ten Commandments within her as Jesus is all three. John “sees” this in his vision and is well aware of what he is viewing. Secondly, he sees a woman “clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown with twelve stars…”. This futuristic vision reveals Mary’s reward for her obedience to God and her continuing battle with Satan. As Sacred Scripture encompasses all time, its level of understanding can be most complex and challenging. Nevertheless, John reveals Mary’s role as co-redemptrix with her son Jesus. Just as both Adam and Eve brought about the fall of man, so too, Mary and Jesus will release man from Satan’s grasp. As the responsorial psalm reveals, “The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.”
Saint Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, continues the same theme in today’s second reading. Paul emphasizes that Jesus is the New Adam and the first fruits of the New Creation. Paul confirms the belief in the Resurrection of all Christians who follow Christ. Does it not make sense, then, that Mary would be the first
recipient of that gift after her Son, the Incarnated Word? Paul’s letter confirms the course of events that will take place as God’s Kingdom comes to fruition.
Finally, in today’s Gospel by Luke, the story of Mary’s “Yes” is partially retold. The setting is a humble abode, Zechariah’s house where the exchange between Elizabeth, Mary’s elderly cousin, and Mary take place. The exchange is earth shattering and the relationship ironic and challenging. As Mary bears the Messiah within her womb, Elizabeth bears John, the Messiah’s
announcer. It is apparent that Elizabeth recognizes this and the fact that Mary is now the future Queen Mother is emphasized. Thus, Mary should be served by Elizabeth not visa-versa. Nonetheless, in humility, Mary has come to help Elizabeth during her final months of pregnancy. The encounter causes John, within Elizabeth’s womb, to leap with joy as the Holy Spirit over- shadows Elizabeth and reveals the “mystery” of the Incarnate Word to her as she utters those memorable words, “…and how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me…?” This acknowledgment that Mary bears God within her sets the relationship and role of Mary in human history for all ages. Likewise, Mary’s humble response reveals God’s favor rests
on those who put others before themselves. In just a few words, Divine perspective is succinctly revealed. Mary, the Queen Mother, like her son has come to serve and not to be served.
Holy Mother the Church desires all to see that we are placed on this planet to serve and fulfill God’s Will not our own. As the world pressures us to obtain fame, fortune, possessions and pride, the Church calls us to the opposite. She reminds us that from the Divine perspective humility and kindness are the treasures that we should store for eternal happiness. We need to submit our will to the Father and be prepared to accept whatever comes. Holy Mother the Church reminds us that the wealth of the world is nothing in comparison to gifts that God will give if we listen to His Voice and follow His Will. Thus, this solemnity is a summons for each of us to follow and submit our will to the Spirit’s will.
