Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Saturday, August 15

“Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.”

– Catechism of the Catholic Church #966

Holy Days of Obligation — Did You Know?

Every Catholic who has attained the age of reason, and is not prevented by sickness or

other sufficient cause, is obligated to rest from servile work and attend Holy Mass on the following days. In so far as possible they are also to abstain from those labors and

business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is

proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body. (See Canon 1247.)

• All Sundays of the year

• January 1 — Octave of Christmas, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

• The Ascension of Our Lord — Observed on the seventh Sunday of

Easter rather than on the Thursday after the sixth Sunday of Easter

• August 15 — The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

• November 1 — All Saints’ Day

• December 8 — The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

• December 25 — Christmas, The Nativity of Our Lord

When the holy days of January 1, August 15, or November 1 fall on a Saturday or

Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abolished. Parishes continue to observe these

holy days so that people who wish to participate are able to do so.

Of course, this applies in “normal times”. In our current pandemic situation, Archbishop Lori has extended his dispensation of the faithful from the obligation to

attend Sunday Mass through the entirety of Phase II [of the reopening plan]. Phase II of

the archdiocesan plan for reopening parishes began the weekend of May 30-31, allowing

for public Masses to resume at the pastor’s discretion and where it is permissible to do

so based on conditions in the local jurisdiction.

Sacramental

Religious Education

Children’s Faith Formation in 2020-2021 Pre-K through Grade 8

Religious Education classes for children begin on September 13! For the safety of the children and our catechists, we will begin the new year with a weekly online format for our religion classes. Our catechists will present the lessons at your child’s age level. As the year goes along, hopefully the pandemic situation will improve and we will be able to return safely to the classrooms for religion classes.

Registration information can be found at

www.shgparish.org/children, and it is also available at the Parish Office. If you are new to our faith formation program, we welcome your children as we strive to know and grow closer to our God!

Thank You from Seminarian Maurice Despite the circumstances of this unusual year, my time at Sacred Heart Parish was a tremendous gift! It was a blessing to meet, know, and minister to many of you during my time here. I thank you for your kindness and hospitality, and I am grateful to those who gathered for my “farewell” after the Masses in July. Please pray for me as I return to the seminary and prepare to be ordained to the transitional diaconate next May, God willing, and to the priesthood the following year.

Sharing the Faith and Praying with Your Children

53. The ministry of evangelization carried out by Christian parents is original and irreplaceable. It assumes the characteristics typical of family life itself, which should be interwoven with love, simplicity, practicality and daily witness.

60. The concrete example and living witness of parents is fundamental and irreplaceable in educating their children to pray. Only by praying together with their children can a father and mother — exercising their royal priesthood — penetrate the innermost depths of their children's hearts and leave an impression that the future events in their lives will not be able to efface.

86. The future of humanity passes by way of the family.

Hosted by Edward Herrera, HWG asks questions that are helpful to those experiencing loss and the friends and family who want to comfort them. Listen to the podcasts at www.howwegrieve.org.

Annual Jessica Meredith Jacobsen 5K Memorial Run and Fun Walk: Update In order to keep everyone as safe as possible, we have decided to change the 13th Annual Jessica Meredith Jacobsen 5K Memorial Run and Fun Walk to a “Virtual Race”. This race was originally scheduled on September 19 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Towson. The race has been organized by the Knights of Columbus Council #4011 (Father O’Neill Council) in Lutherville and memorializes Jessica Meredith Jacobsen, who died tragically in 2007 as a result of domestic abuse. The event supports The House of Ruth, the School Tuition Assistance Fund, and Fr. O’Neill Charities. Details of how to register and support this cause can be found at https://runsignup.com/Race/MD/Towson/JessicaMeredithJacobsenMemorial5kandFunWalk.

Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church To commemorate the fifth anniversary of his encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis announced that the period between May 24, 2020 and May 24, 2021 will be designated as Laudato si’ Year for the Catholic Church, and he released a special prayer. During this year, Sacred Heart Parish will provide weekly excerpts from the encyclical with reflection questions as a way for parishioners to participate in this global commemoration. To read and reflect on the full encyclical, click below:

Laudato si’ in English • Laudato si’ in Spanish

Sister Earth, along with all the abandoned of our world, cries out, pleading that we take another course. Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years. Yet we are called to be instruments of God our Father, so that our planet might be what he desired when he created it and correspond with his plan for peace, beauty, and fullness. (LS #53)

• For ten weeks we have been reflecting on Laudato si’. How has God touched your heart as you reflected on the excerpts from the encyclical during this time? This week, listen to the pleas of Sister Earth and consider how you can respond.

Help Our Marriage

Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue, or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille (pronounced “retro-vi” with a long “i”) program has helped many couples experiencing difficulties in their marriages. For confidential information or to register for the upcoming program beginning with a weekend on September 4‒6, please visit www.HelpOurMarriage.org — or call 443-400-7017 or send an email to [email protected].

Mike and Theresa Lagonigro help run the Retrouvaille program in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Retrouvaille is a very successful and canonically recognized program that has helped save many marriages since it began in 1977. Retrouvaille is a non-profit and all-volunteer ministry that collectively impacts more struggling marriages and families than any other ministry in the world. It is the best-kept secret in marriage ministry.

They are one of the many couples who have turned their struggling marriages around. In 2005, on the brink of divorce, Mike and Theresa went to Retrouvaille seeking help and hope. This year, they celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary, and they now help to provide the same hope that was given to them.
