Atom

Please take notes on the following slides!

Structure At the center of the atom is the nucleus. It is made up of protons and neutrons. The electrons spin in orbits around the outside of the nucleus.

ProtonsThe proton is a positively charged particle that is located at the center of the atom in the nucleus.

Electrons The electron is a negatively charged particle that spins around the outside of the nucleus. In most atoms, there are the same amount of electrons and protons.

Electrons are attracted to the nucleus by the positive charge of the protons. Electrons are much smaller than neutrons and protons. About 1,800 times smaller!

Neutrons The neutron doesn’t have any charge. It is located inside the nucleus.

Atomic NumberThe number of protons in an atom is called its atomic number. In the periodic table, atoms are arranged in atomic number order.

Atomic Mass The number of neutrons combined with the number of protons

Neutrons + Protons = atomic mass

Count off into 6 groups

Get into the group with the same number

I will call out an element and your group has to make that atom together on the whiteboard

Then one group will come up and create the atom on the wall

Number of protonsFirst, look for the atomic number

That is how many protons

Number of electrons The number of electrons are usually the same as the number of protons

Number of neutrons First, round the atomic mass up or down

Then, what do we do to find the neutrons?
