PREFACE

Authors are of two typesthose that edit for edition sake and a few for the

spread of knowledge- MY Guru writes

My intention is one of latter class. I am not new to the astrologicalenthusiasts-at least to the Readers of Prof. B. V. Raman's Astrologicalmagazine in which series of Articles under the caption "New Techniques of Prediction" have appeared since February 1962 . I could have straight-away

published this book, without such previous revelations- But my sincere wishwas that its merit must be first known to the public before the publication of this book as I feared that this book may be thought to be one among manyalready in the market- I had no intention to publish so early as this as all myResearch Work is not yet over and there are still many more wonderful

subjects under examination- But the urge of many of the Readers of myArticles has been so heavy that I could not postpone to a later date. As far aspossible majority of the principles that have proved true by Research areincluded in this edition reserving the rest for future. That what all I haveexpounded is genuine and marvelous may be seen from the several opinionsof the Readers who also had consulted me.

It was one Nandi Nadi of Mysore that prompted me to probes into thissubject- By that my intention is not to encourage consultation of Nadi

Readings. For, I have had the bitter experience of them- All those Nadisportray the past with meticulous details correctly but the disappointingfeature in them is that in almost all cases the future reading goes wrong.So, I would rather advise you to prefer an original astrologer who may be 50per cent correct to rather than to get disillusioned by invariably highpromises

FOREWORD

ASTROLOGY being, admittedly, a highly complex and elusive subject, it maywell neigh be impossible to attain a dependable degree of proficiency, inmastering the principles of prediction, even with its study of a life-time,unless one possesses intuitive bent or Divine Gift. Any one who attempts tostudy the subject, without the aid of a Guru, will be embarrassed inunderstanding the technique, delineated by various Authors with the citationof numerous quotationssome conflicting with each other, the differentalternatives indicated and the intricate tests posed do not easily yield for

judging any situation correctly. In my trying to understand the subject (with-out initiation). I landed into a field of confusions and contradictions which,undermined my belief in the subject itself.

" In such a predicament, I chanced to read the Articles published in Prof.Raman's ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE, under the caption of the NEW

TECHNIQUE OF PREDICTION, contributed by Sri H. R. Seshadri lyer, M.A.,which roused my curiosity and rekindled my interest in trying to understandthe NEW TECHNIQUE. After some discussion with the Author, I felt inclined to

appreciate his methods, based on mathematical calculations ; and theprecise tests laid down by him for deciphering the prominent life-events bythe assistance of various VARGA or AMSA charts, appeared to me morerational than the traditional methods of valuation.

While claiming no originality for his theories, Sri lyer maintains that he has judiciously culled out and collected the principles advanced by him fromancient GRANTHAS. Indeed, special credit is due to him for the discovery of various scattered principles, buried underground, and for having evolved outof them, a homogeneous theory leading to a fair fixation of the timing of events. This work has, undoubtedly, involved him in deep study and constantresearch, coupled with the verification of results by the continuousapplication of the principles to the solution of numerous and distinctive typeof problems that confronted him during his long practice for over 20 years. I

believe that he has struck a novel line of approach which is appealing andcomparatively simpler. That no serious criticism has, so far, appeared in theMAGAZINE, from Readers, amongst whom there must, presumably, beprofound scholars of the Science, is, by itself, a commendation of itsdeserving worth.

I am glad to find that the theory advanced in the Articles, is now expandedinto a Book-Form, containing a more detailed and comprehensive treatmentof the subject; it contains TWO parts ; the first, dealing with the General

Principles forming the background of the theory, and the other, the methodsof practical application thereof, for the solution of concrete problems. The

TREATISE is thus calculated to meet the needs of not only the lay-reader, butalso those of a research-scholar and the professional practitioner I believethat this COMPENDIUM will receive extensive patronage, which it richly deser-ves, from the general public.

In conclusion, I heartily congratulate Sri Seshadri lyer ,for his highlyintelligent and laborious enterprise in publishing the Treatise, which

constitutes a most useful and elucidative addition to the existing literature onthe subject.

We know matter can NEITHER BECONSTRUCTED NOR DESTROYED and Total of ENERGY is a constant or thereis a perfect law for all this .One can create matter from energy and energyfrom matter by brain power . Brain is a processing unit of computer in humanbeings. AS computer is controlled by a program, in the same way humanbeing is controlled by a program. That program is fixed by gravitational

forces of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter , Venus, Saturn and Rahu andKetu at the time of birth by rays of these planets and stars.Angle of rays of these planets varies every second. It also changes at different places as earthis rotating and moving. Due to this DESTINY of each individual is different. Toknow details of angles of the said planets please read Ephemereis by Lahiri.NASA has helped in computing star positions or planet positions in THEWORLD and helped Astrologers on this account.

To study all this we need public help and patronage of the GOVERNMENT.

Bearing this in mind after a stage of study I took to research work and after along time when my planets also were favorably disposed for genuineResearch some new flashes struck me and some advantageous situationsarose of their own accord. When I say this I do this with authority. Even awell-read and proficient astrologer, if not backed by favorable planets, islikely to go down at such unpropitious times. This being Vedanga all cannothope to be all successful at all times. One must be Godly and before venturehe must think of his deity and then proceed. For, it is only then he will have

proper flashes especially in matters of alternative situations.

Next I wish to trace the origin of this Science, its gradual development and itspresent state. All know that it is Vedanga. As Veda is spelled by God so is thisScience too. There are versions stating that Iswara narrated this Science toParvathi and Nandikeswara to his disciples Then came the days of Maharishiswho by their superior knowledge and clairvoyance taught their Disciplesorally. You may be aware of one Saptha-Rishi Vakyam meaning that theseven Maharishis had discussed this science. Next came the days when someof their disciples took to scribing mostly on Palm-Leaves. So far this SacredScience was being held safe in their hands. Next followed the days of Daivagnas who though not equal to the class of Rishi-Shisyas were of sufficiently superior intellect and more than all godly. Thus with their intellectand intuition they wrote out texts. Unfortunately it was Poetic Era, Prose

being of recent origin. In the anxiety to maintain Rhyme and Grammar theyhad to use sometimes words with double meaning or even distracted Tiean-.

The author is sure of the proper meaning of his writings; but when othersread his verses very likely doubts arise. Actually it has been so and this hasgiven rise to many commentators viewing the same matter differently.Varahamihira in his Brihat-Jataka has in the very opening verse said that dueto hurried writing and short space he had to compose verses with words of deep and multiple meanings-Any one perusing Brihat-Jataka may feel thatthere is nothing substantial helping prediction. One may even go to theextent of saying that his sayings may not be always true. I too held such aview so far. Yet this is the first text quoted by all. Really it must be a greatand valuable work. It is only when my research proved good I began toappreciate the monumental work. Very many secrets are there hidden. Forexample, a long chapter deals with various kinds of Ayurdayas. It is notmeant only to estimate the longevity. From the several Rays attributed toplanets the magnitude of effects may be gauged. I have illustrated them inmy Chapter VII on finding Quantum of wealth and number of issues. LikewiseI have seen Astrologers gauging other matters but they have held them withthemselves and for themselves. If they come out with those secrets theywould be not only rendering their meritorious service to this science butwould be helping the public as well.

It is a very useful subject which deserves to be introduced in universities. Iam aware of the course of Astrology in Sanskrit Colleges. After a number of years of study one gets out as Jyothir Visharada but of what avail, he will notbe able to handle a horoscope. The nature of this course is such that it isfilled up mostly with theories than practice. What is needed is more of

practice with applications of principles by which modern conditions may beestimated and this can be successful only at university level- Some may saythat it is not a definite science to be introduced in colleges. If so, are othersubjects like economics, Statistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Logic etc.perfect subjects? After all does it require one to waste his teens and part of

youth to study History, Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, Politics, andLiterature etc at the college? In fact any one with the knowledge of letters willbe able to understand them even in a much shorter time and better levelthan a college student reading for the sake of a Degree. Such a Degreeholder may not be in a position to impart even that little knowledge to othersonce he gets out of the college as his immediate anxiety would be job-hunting I say this with personal experience. What have I been able to do withmy Mathematics M. A- Degree (with first class Graduate ship and Meritscholarship) only to become a Government Servant for which an ordinaryS. S. L- C will do as is now actually. It is this notion that made me study aNoble subject which may not only help me but be helpful to the public also.At this stage I feel to forget my M. A. Degree or say any degree of scienceor technology and be proud to be called a Post-Graduate in Astrology. Afterthis little dilation let me go back to the subject.

Having surveyed the development of the Science upto the period of Daivagnas we have to know its condition later. Again two types of Astrologersexist now- One of scholarly type who have held back the essence of thisscience with themselves and held it very secretive making business out of itand finally hurrying their knowledge as invariably their sons prove unworthyof their father to inherit the knowledge. The other type is what we find inplenty these days-one dollar Astrologers posing as Professors after reading abook or two on the subject These latter class of astrologers will not only loosetheir name but also bring discredit to the science and to their fellow genuineAstrologers. It is high time that Legislation should intervene to prohibit suchhalf-learned astrologers trading upon men who are already in distress. For,usually one in distress only consults an Astrologer. All these must go andResearch work must be installed. That is the only way for the revival of thissacred science.

Now about this publication, I had intended to publish only the results of myResearch work leaving off the elementary portions to the Readers them-selves. But many of my friends requested me to bring forth a self-sufficientand exhaustive Treatise So, I have attempted at it and placed before thepublic in two parts. This treatise contains very many new points not known tomany so far I have tried my best to render the science mathematical. I

have .selected only those theories that have stood the test in all casesleaving off unproved ones, As my object is to spread these novel ideas I feelsatisfied if the Readers follow my theories faithfully and adopt them in theirfuture handling.

This treatise has two parts. The first part contains all the preliminaries andthe general cannons that have to be learnt by all.

Let me review Part 1 for the present-

Chapter I The first chapter deals with Definitions and Nomenclatures,

English. Sanskrit and Tamil names are given -with the abbreviation forplanets and Rasis that may be used in this Treatise. In this chapter thederivations of the month, weekday are explained. The fitting in of year,month, yoga, star etc. into the Zodiac is shown.

This is a novelty. The use of five Angas viz. Thithi etc-, is revealed-a hiddensecret. Graha Samayam is a very useful subject which is shown in detail-Finally the method of Rectification of Birth Dasha is explained-a puzzle so far.

Chapter II deals with the : Karaktwa of Rasi, Bhava, Stars and Planets. Herethe subject is handled with care. All things said here are truths found afterapplication. Very many modern ideas are said here.

Chapter III deals with the preliminaries to be observed to cast a horoscope- The Ayanamasa and Ephemeres to be followed are suggested. The Tatwa Theory helpful to verify the birth time is explained. Working of a chart fromthe Ephemeres and Panchanga are illustrated. Even a layman may learn the

subject well-

Chapter IV describes Shadbala in a concise form

Chapter V deals with Yogas. A brief but exhaustive method of description is

used here.

Chapter VI deals with Female Horoscopy- The handling of this is unique.

Chapter VII, the last chapter of Bhava Phalam, is a special treatment notfound in any book in such a methodical way.

Lastly I am thankful to Brig. (Dr) Kapil Mohan V.S.M. , who has helped me

and lent moral support to edit this book written by my Guru H.R.SeshadriIyer, Author of the book . I have only edited this book as per his wisheswritten long time back before his death.

It is surprising that Mr. sheshadri Iyer wrote in 1980 that I shall take coachingunder him.
