    Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whetheracquired commercially or off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used toincrease, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.Some Assistive Technologies include text-to-speech screen readers, scanning pens,word processors, voice recognition software, and screen magnification software.Project Assists technology offerings are intended to provide assistance for learning

    disabilities.

    This handbook is a comprehensive list of all Project Assists technology offerings withbrief descriptions of the basic function of each item and how it may benefit students.

    We have technology solutions ranging from the non-electronic (low-tech) to thecomputer-based (high-tech). Each of our listings is color coded according to this classification:

    Assistive Technology may be categorized in many different ways, but in this handbook there are four categories inwhich a particular piece of technology may be assigned. A single piece of technology may belong to more thanone category in some cases.

    Note TakingTaking notes relies on several skills. It is one of the most important parts of academic study. Problems a studentmay have with taking notes include inability to keep up with the instructor, difficulty using a pencil/pen, andinability to keep notes organized. Yet difficulties withwriting are common in college students, and a student with learning disabilities may encounter great obstacleswhen trying to write. Math is needed in any fieldthat works with money and finance as well as science and engineering. Yet students have more difficulties withmathematics than with any other specific subject.     Book Port is a flexible book reading device that consists of a small, portable unit with akeypad and earbuds,plus accompanying software.     The CyberPad is an electronic clipboard that records class notes electronically andtransfers them to a computer. Specialized paper is not necessary; any letter-size orA4 size paper can be used, and the paper tablet may be up to thick.     Go directly from ink to software. Back up and quickly retrieve handwritten documentson a PC. Take notes or draw sketches in ink on the smart paper and a tiny cameracaptures the work, storing up to 40 pages at a time. It's all possible with the Logitechio2 Digital Writing System.The smart digital paper consists of a printed dot pattern which locates words and

    images on the page, and ensures they appear in the same place in digitized files.When the digital pen is docked, text and sketches are automatically transferred to thePC where they can be found, used, and shared.

    The Livescribe Pulse Pen records and links audio to written notes. Words are nevermissed because lectures and presentations are recorded during note taking.     Visual Aids

    Using the Algebra Balance, students can physically represent and solve equations.Weights placed on the outer pans represent negative integers and those placed inthe inner pans represent positive integers.     A concrete, manipulative based introduction to algebra. All the student needs toknow is basic addition/subtraction facts and to be able to learn the "rules" of legalmoves one can make to solve equations. Use blocks with printed numbers torepresent constants and pawns to represent variables, then balance both sides to

    balance your equation. Illustrates the concept of the variable.

    Full page of colored highlighter tape that can cover an entire page or can be cut intospecific sizes and shapes.

    Magnify words or images from a page. Great for visual or attention needs.

    Three-part set for teaching fractions. The white plastic base of each shows fourdifferent shapes. Each clear layer divides these shapes into progressively smallerfractions. One set starts with halves, another with thirds, and the last with fifths.

    A simple tape recorder records classroom lectures as given. The student can listento the recording at a later time to review.

    The voice activated tape recorder provides the same functions as the basic taperecorder, but starts recording when it detects human voices.

    The digital voice recorder stores hours of voice recordings that can be transferred toa computer. It can divide recordings into sections that can be bookmarked.Lectures can be played back during free study time or used with a speech-to-textprogram like Dragon Naturally Speaking to turn into typewritten notes.

    Word Processors

    The AlphaSmart 3000 is a compact, portable device that allows the student to takenotes via a keyboard and save them in 8 separate files (each file can be categorizedas a subject). With the 3000, the user can enter and edit text, then send it to anycomputer (PC or Macintosh) for formatting or directly to a printer. Its portabilityallows students to use it anywhere and anytimein the classroom, at home, or on

    field trips. The AlphaSmart 3000 is designed so that students don't get caught up inthe complexities of a computer. Students spend their time learning rather thandealing with the operating system of a computer.TheAlphaSmart 3000 uses SmartApplets that increases its range of uses. Compactapplications (applets) are available for word processing, calculator functions,keyboarding instruction, classroom quizzing, outlining, and word prediction.

    The KT Writer was designed by teachers who have taught and used portable wordprocessors for years. It includes innovative and patented features such as a

    Software is usually considered high-tech.

    Math Skills

    FASTT Math helps students develop fluency with basic math facts in addition,subtraction, multiplication, and division. Using the FASTT system (Fluency andAutomaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology), students achieve mathfact fluency. The software provides a continuously adaptive program that efficientlyincreases fluency in customized, 10-minute daily sessions. Developing automaticrecall of basic facts enables students to focus on higher-order math skills asadvanced computation, problem solving, and algebra. FASTT Math is good forstudents who need instruction in number value and quantity, students who need toimprove their speed and accuracy with math facts, or even students whodemonstrate some speed and accuracy with all, or almost all, math facts.Use FASTT Math for 10 minutes a day to gain math fact fluency. Each operation(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) begins with a placement quiz.FASTT Math assigns activities based on the results of the quiz. The program willtrack student progress and generate periodic reports.

    Math Amigo is a math system for use on hand held units supported by powerfulDesktop Management software.It has nearly 2000 activities to help students with remedial math learning. Theseactivities adjust automatically to the students level of mastery.Math Amigo is used with the AlphaSmart Dana. The program provides students withactivities and provides instructors with assessments regarding student progress.

    MathCue is an interactive program that assists students with trigonometry, includingfunctions and graphing. It incorporates several features, including:

    Tutorial Mode- Try problems and see step-by-step solutions.

    F/P Graph- Graph functions in one variable and parametric equations.

    Math Help File- Review definitions, rules, and formulas.

    MathPad Plus: Fractions and Decimalsis an alternative and accessible tool forworking with fractions, decimals, percents, and whole numbers, and providingpractice with all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

    This program includes two modes:

    Worksheet mode (allows users to solve arithmetic problems on-screen just asthey would with pencil and paper)

    Manipulatives mode (provides access to fraction circles, fraction bars, anddecimal grids to help students model fractions and decimals)

    Answers can be checked and printed, and for clarity, only one problem is presentedat a time. MathPad Plus allows students to practice computations, enter math wordproblems, and solve them with manipulatives.

    Reading and Writing Skills

    SOLO is a software package that includes programs to help studentswith reading and writing.

    Co: Writer 4000 is a writing assistant with intelligent word predictionthat helps make the writing process easier, faster, and even fun forstruggling writers of all ages. It reduces the number of keystrokesnecessary to produce a word or sentence, which reduces frustrationlevels.Co: Writer operates in conjunction with word processing and textprograms, sending completed sentences and phrases to thoseprograms. It also reads completed words and sentences aloud beforesending the text to the word processor.

    Write: OutLoud is a talking word processing program that is filled withfeatures that increase its ease of use.Type in a sentence and the program reads it back. Its Talking Toolbaroffers one-click access to common tasks.The Franklin Spell Checker and Dictionary is built into Write: OutLoud.It can read back word by word or sentence by sentence. It can also beused with Co: Writer. There are versions for PC and for the AlphaSmartDana.

    Draft: Builder helps break down the writing process into manageable,consistent steps. With Draft: Builder, students will:

In addition, one can work with virtually any image or text document inKurzweil 3000, including Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF. Project Assist studentsoften use Kurzweil 3000 to read their tests.Easy-to-use features help students:

    In the Project Assist Multimedia Room there are a computer and DVD players thatstudents may use to study, take tests, or to view instructional materials.The Project Assist computer has installed on it all the software titles listed in this

    handbook.

    Contact Project Assist at (856) 691-8600 X282 to complete an Individual Services Plan (ISP) each semester. The ISP

    will determine what equipment should be borrowed. Contact Dotty Perna at X445 or Albert Price at X450 to sign out theequipment and receive assistance in its use.

    Students are responsible for any borrowed items they have signed out from Project Assist.
