The Various Shapes of the Pacific Northwest

• There are multiple definitions of the Pacific Northwest, none definitive. This map shows three possibilities.

• The shaded area shows the historical Oregon Country

• The green line shows the Cascadia bioregion (a.k.a. Pacific Northwest bioregion), defined as "the watersheds of rivers that flow into the Pacific Ocean through North America's temperate rainforest zone".

• A third definition is the labeled states, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, and the province of British Columbia

Looking for the Pacific Northwest: An Exploratory Excursion into the Culture of the PNW

Objective: To explore an aspect of PNW Culture that is definitive in nature, and share what you learn with the rest of the class in a “delightfully entertaining” presentation. Steps to Follow:

1. With a partner brainstorm ideas the two of you think make up PNW Culture. (Examples might be: Starbucks Coffee, Multnomah Falls, Crater Lake, Mt Rainier, The Art Museum, VooDoo Doughnuts, Portlandia… You get the picture) Your Brain-Storm list is due at the beginning of class on Thursday 2/12.

2. As a partnership come to a consensus and select one of the ideas you would like to know more about. Your Topic Proposal is due at the end of class on 2/12.

3. Diligently investigate the idea you select and create a unique way to present what you learn to the rest of us. (Make it interesting!!!!!)

4. Answer the Five following research questions in outline form: -Who and/or What -Where -When

-Why -How

5. Utilize this outline for the presentation you will be making about your topic. (10 minutes in length max)

Make it detailed and informative so that you will be able to refer to it during your presentation. Your Outline is due in at the end of class on Tuesday 2/17. 6. Create a visual piece or artifact to illuminate your topic; make it engaging to your audience.
