From the DirectorDid you know that when you visit AMY, you are helping your child to develop a healthy brain? Playing with Keva® Planks in ArtZone, making a collage in art exhibitions or creating artwork in ArtVille allows your child’s brain to create

connections that set the stage for a healthy adult life. There is so much evidence that “directed art play” in early childhood wires the brain properly. Making choices about which crayon to draw with, exploring the edges of shapes and matching patterns all stimulate a child’s “executive function.” This allows a child to learn language more easily and make decisions in all areas of life. AMY is the only museum with ArtVille, a space solely devoted to “directed art play,” which is play with a purpose. Although your

child is having a fun experience, your visit is also investing in their healthy development. That’s why the museum is proceeding with renovations to ArtVille even though we are in a challenging economy.

With funds already dedicated through the City of Mesa’s Cultural Impact Fees, we will begin work in late fall. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months. Meanwhile, visit the museum often and enjoy all the activities and fun, knowing that you made an excellent choice for your child’s growth and future life. Warm regards,

Executive Director

QI know there have been budget cuts, but it seems like the exhibits a few years ago had more "stations" where kids could actually do a lot more hands-on activities. Is the museum planning to increase exhibition activities at some point and include more for the older kids to do too?

Q My sons love the opportunity to "get messy" and to express themselves in AMY's workshops. I love not having to clean up the mess afterwards! Does AMY offer a sibling discount?

"Every Bead Tells A Story: Christy Puetz & Beads of Courage," now through August 9, 2009.

Christy grew up in a small, farm community in northern Minnesota. When she wasn’t chopping wood, mowing lawn or playing croquet, she could usually be found cutting out little people and animals from wood scraps in her father’s wood shop or crafting fabric forms made on her mother’s sewing machine. Her work continues to be a combination of these two techniques, today, focusing her latest subject matter: Patterns found in nature and disease.

Puetz has spent more than a decade growing and developing fiber art and beading techniques. In 1993, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fiber Arts with a minor in Printmaking from the University of North Dakota. For the past several years, she has shown her art work extensively, been published in multiple books and designed

over a dozen commissioned pieces for collectors.

Strongly dedicated to producing and exhibiting her artwork, Puetz is heavily involved in the Phoenix Art Community, formerly serving as a board member for the Arizona Museum Association and the Director of Education at The Bead Museum. Her passion for art and the community carries over into her other field of expertise, which is developing and facilitating community education and Artist-in-Residence programs at schools, libraries, community centers and hospitals.

Puetz currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona where she is the Program Director for Beads of Courage, a non-profit organization that creates arts-in-medicine programming for children coping with cancer and other serious illnesses.

Journey with us through Christy's most recently, celebrated endeavor: "Every Bead Tells A Story," exhibiting now at AMY. Then, hold a precious bead in your hand. What story does it tell you?

Special thanks to the following people and organizations:

Christy Puetz, Artist and Program Director, Beads of Courage®, Inc. | Jean Baruch, Founder and President, Beads of Courage®, Inc. | The six featured Beads of Courage Kids and their families for sharing their beads and stories: Ainsley, Cameron, Charlie, Isabelle, Kellie and Sofia | Kari Green, Child Life Specialist, Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders | Carol Saker, Bead Artist | Blair Revak and Heather Walterson, Bead Artists | Gail G. Finney, Bead Artist | Kathryn Guler, Bead Artist | Arizona Society of Glass Beadmakers

By Jeffory Morris, Youth Museum Curator

hristy Puetz's work explores the intricate relationship between how the roles of disease (how

humans deal with it), nature, the human body (human beings in general) and medicine play in the world today and how they can shape our identity (human vs. nature). Her wildly imaginative, beaded creatures and artwork reflect her own sense of humor and love of life.

AYes! In fact, you may have already noticed ArtZone, a new semi-permanent gallery for children ages 4 and older. It will house a lot more activities for older children and will near completion in late July of this year.

This solution will also allow us additional time needed to dedicate to increasing the quantity and quality of our exhibitions and corresponding activities for each show.

AYes! AMY is introducing sibling discounts for the 2009 Summer Classes and beyond. We value your patronage and feel that it is important to offer affordable options for you and your family.

I‛m Paintingin the rain

If it's raining outside, no problem! If you can sing in the rain, why can't you paint in the rain, too?! Not even soggy weather can stop the artist in you!

Here's a terrific indoor/outdoor art activity that you can do, anywhere.

Draw on card stock paper with lots of colorful, washable markers. Then place your painting outdoors in the rain. Yep, in the rain!

Once the colors have run together, bring your unique artwork back inside and lay it on a flat surface to dry.

Whaala! You have your very own, one-of-a-kind, Impressionist Art Masterpiece!
