    Founded in 1973, Morris Arts is a not-for-profit organization that is committedto enhancing the arts and their impact on the quality of life in the Morris area.Morris Arts’ varied programs and services are designed to educate and enrichthe learning experiences of school children, build vibrant communities througharts programming and support of locally based arts organizations, celebrate thecreativity of artists who live in our midst, serve as a central arts resource, andprovide information about the arts to the general public.

    A significant focus of Morris Arts’ work is enriching the learning experiences ofschool children through arts education programs designed for curricular inte-gration and sustained impact.

    Beyond the classroom, Morris Arts provides creative opportunities for MorrisCounty’s most vulnerable children and their families through partnerships withsocial service agencies and community organizations. We hope that you findour resources and services valuable and will continue to support the arts edu-cation program of Morris Arts.

    SELECT A PROGRAMLook over our Program Guide or attend our annual Arts Education Showcase and select the program best suited for your gradesor events. We recommend that you consult with the principal and the teachers with classes attending the program for sugges-tions. Morris Arts’ education staff is also available for consultation to make suggestions based on your school’s interests.

    IDENTIFY AVAILABLE DATES AND TIMESCheck the school’s master calendar and choose at least three open dates. Decide how many performances are needed. If youhave multiple performances on the same day, please allow 15 minutes between performances to allow for setup and to assem-ble the next group of students.

    SCHEDULE YOUR PROGRAMSGo to our website www.morrisartseducation.com to find artist contact information and contact the artist directly to book theshows you have selected. The artist will send you the necessary paperwork along with a study guide, technical requirementsand payment procedure for the program you have selected. Please submit any necessary district, insurance or hold harmlessforms early to the artists for timely processing.

    CONFIRM DATESOnce a date has been selected and confirmed with the artist, make sure your performances are on the school’s master calendar.Our artists are in heavy demand and it may be difficult to reschedule them if a conflict develops.

    PERFORMANCE PREPARATIONPrepare your students to view the performance with an introductory lesson from the study guide provided by the artist. Discussproper behavior and etiquette for viewing a live performance.

    PERFORMANCE DAYPlan to meet the artist before the first performance to get acquainted and help them find the equipment, dressing and perform-ance area at your school. Make sure your students are in their seats and ready to view the performance at the starting time.

    CIRCUSYOGA blends the practice of yoga with the skillsof circus. Through this two-week interdisciplinary resi-dency students explore kinesiology, creativity and con-nection. Yoga teaches us how to be aware of our bodiesin action and Circus is a culture of inclusion and celebra-tion that teaches how remarkable we can be in our bod-ies. This residency explores anatomy and physiology asit relates to a particular skill. Students will learn how thewhole body and the focus of the mind contribute tomovement, choices and abilities in any activity.

    CircusYoga offers a cooperative learning environment.Through this exploration each class will co-create a per-formance act. The culminating experience is aCircusYoga Celebration open to the whole school com-munity! Erin Maile O’Keefe; Grades K-8

    INSTRUMENTS: ANCIENT TO FUTURE Digital musicspecialist, ethnomusicologist and educator AndyWasserman introduces students to the secrets of under-standing how sounds are created to express the lan-guage of music past, present and future. AndyWasserman has the students travel through time, com-bining a virtual cornucopia of computerized music tech-nology alongside ethnic instruments from around theworld to illustrate where music has been and where it isgoing. Connections between instruments past and pres-ent are explained and demonstrated using synthesizerkeyboards, digital samplers, electronic drums and a lap-top computer. Andy Wasserman; Grades K-12

    MOSAIC AND TILE ARTS Students collaborate with tileand mosaic artists Kathy Casper and Jackie StackLagakos to create a lasting work of art for their school.From design to creation these celebrated artists guidestudents through each step of the creative process,exploring a variety of techniques. The mosaic process iswell-suited to group work, where a range of tasks aretaken up by students of different levels of skill and inter-est. Kathy Casper; Grades K-12

    MURAL ARTS WITH DAN FENELON New Jersey artistDan Fenelon collaborates with school communities tocreate vibrant, high energy murals and installations.Students are led through the mural making processfrom theme development and planning to participationin painting the finished work. Educated at the School ofthe Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Dan has designedlogos for Major League Baseball, the National HockeyLeague and the Discovery Channel’s AmericanChoppers. He has designed large scale public murals inMontclair, Newark, South Orange and Grand Rapids.Dan Fenelon; Grades K-12

    THE ARTIST RESIDENCY is an interdisciplinary, in-depth project that demonstrates how the arts can inspire uniquely creative and meaningful learning experiences for aschool community. Artists, principals and teachers collaborate to create an educational experience that transcends the typical classroom experience by exploring multiple-intelligence, hands-on ways of learning. Students learn to express themselves creatively while teachers are exposed to innovative strategies for implementing the CoreCurriculum Content Standards.

    The Artist Residency takes place over a two to six week period. Participating artists-in-residence are carefully chosen for their artistic talent and innovative programs as wellas their ability to teach and relate to young people. The artists are committed to the interdepartmental approach, combining more than one academic discipline into the activ-ities of the residency, and work closely with school administrators and faculty to design the residency through a pre-planning meeting and teachers’ workshop. Core groupsconsisting of approximately 100 students form the nucleus of the residency. Ten-day residencies range in price from $4200 to $6500.

  • PAGES TO PLAYERS JR This residency affords stu-dents the opportunity to explore a Shakespeare play inall its dimensions, from reading and discussion torehearsal and performance. Working with the educa-tion staff of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey,the residency begins with an exploration of ensemble,introducing students to valuable skills for creative col-laboration and problem-solving. Working with anabridged Shakespeare text, the students will exploreboth physical and verbal forms of expression, buildingself-confidence and the fluent, effective use of lan-guage. Each residency will culminate in a performanceby the student ensemble. This residency is designedfor a four to six week period, but shorter residenciesmay be possible.     PEACE GARDEN SONG AND MURAL PROJECT In thisresidency students explore collaborative art andmusic making under the direction of visual artistJennifer Levine and singer songwriter ScottMassarsky. Participants have the opportunity to imag-ine, discuss and write how their thoughts, actions andwords can create a more peaceful world. Together stu-dents provide inspiration for an original musical com-position as well as design, sketch and paint a muralcelebrating peace. This multi-sensory residencyengages auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. The

    final product offers the school an original song and apermanent piece of art that declares loudly and proud-ly that the school values peace and safety. JenniferLevine and Scott Massarsky; Grades K-12

    THE PLAY'S THE THING I and II In these residencies,actor/director Margaret Noonan offers an exciting,hands-on approach to Shakespeare for elementary/mid-dle school students. Students read, dissect and actout a scene, play or monologue from Shakespeare.The young actors come to understand the story, char-acters and language as Shakespeare intended,through performance. I. SHAKESPEAREAN SCENE STUDY / ROMEO ANDJULIET, ACT I, SCENE V: This residency provides stu-dents with an opportunity to grow intellectually andartistically. It improves language fluency and helpsdevelop articulation, breath control and projection.Students, in the end, will improve active listening,vocal variety, physical expression, concentration andfocus. Students will be exposed to the elements oftheater, including but not limited to: plot, characterand action. (Recommended for grades 4-5)II. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM: This residencyexpands on the experience of scene study. The pur-pose is to create and develop a process for developingbelievable and multidimensional characters in aShakespearean play. Students create a method for

    defining and articulating character objectives, inten-tions and appropriate subtext. They apply this methodto a live performance. (Recommended for grades 5-6)

    POETRY, MAGIC AND ME This fun and engaging five-session poetry writing residency teaches elementaryschool students how to express who they are and howthey feel through the magic of poetry. Students willwrite both collaborative and individual poems aboutsuch topics as wishes, dreams, the self and life mem-ories. They will be introduced to the basic elements ofpoetry writing and a range of poetic forms, from freeverse to odes. The residency will culminate in a printedanthology of student work.     PROJECT MEMOIR: TURNING YOUR LIFE INTO ASTORY This dynamic four-day, in-school creative writ-ing residency for middle-school students teachesyoung people how to write descriptively, powerfullyand deeply about some of the most importantmoments of their lives. Students will cultivate theirown unique voices through engaging creative writingexercises that are designed to help them craft person-al narratives with rich description and deep feeling.They will learn how to identify the key moments intheir experiences that will lead to evocative memoirs.Students will also read excerpts from great memoirsof the preteen and teen years by well-known adult and

    NEW: REAL BEAUTY: UNCOVERED – LET’S BE REAL"Real Beauty: Uncovered" provides schools with acomprehensive “Let’s Be Real” educational program,designed to help students develop an authentic senseof their own beauty and value regardless of society’sconstraints and peer pressure. It promotes the under-standing that beauty comes from within. In a worldwhere touched-up and altered images in the mediadistort our perceptions, “Real Beauty: Uncovered”challenges students to accept themselves for whothey really are. Through this lesson of self-acceptance,students are given the tools to boost their confidence,deal with bullying, eating disorders, etc., and appreci-ate others as well. This program is made up of a seriesof classes for students, an interview/photography ses-sion with each participant and a culminating event forstudents and the community as a whole.     SPIRITREE Spiritree residencies draw on the power ofart-making to tap the many talents and intelligences ofstudents. During 10 day residencies, the Spiritreeartists guide students through thematically defined,curriculum related residencies which culminate in

    installations and performances featuring students’original masks, sculpture and processional puppets inpapier mâchè. Spiritree also offers mural residencieswhere the student-artists are the protagonists fromthe planning stages to the completion of a lastingwork of art for their school. During 3 to 5 day mini-residencies, the students create 2-dimensional art-work exploring a wide variety of materials and tech-niques. At the conclusion of a mini-residency, the stu-dents act as docents, sharing their artwork and learn-ing experience with the school community: studentsteaching students. The Spiritree artists plan withteachers to choose themes and develop projects thatare appropriate and significant for the specific setting.Marco Giammetti and Carol Hendrickson; Grades K-12

    WE ARE ALL ARTISTS A residency with muralist andart educator Caren Frost Olmsted unleashes the artistin each student that participates in the creation of astunning, theme driven mural. Every student will getto participate in the painting (no matter what their skilllevel) with the end result of knowing that they have lefta permanent artistic legacy behind. Olmsted willdesign a mural tailored to the age level and basedupon themes provided by the school, such as localhistory, landscapes and community ideals. The dura-tion of the project will be determined by the size andscale of the walls to be painted and the number of stu-

    dents to be included. Once the mural is complete,Olmsted will do any necessary touch-ups, as well asseal the wall for longevity and easy maintenance. Thisresidency is also an excellent opportunity for parentvolunteers to participate in a special school event.Caren Frost Olmsted; Grades K-12

    WORLD DANCE During this dance residency, studentslearn folk dances representing different countries andcultures, while also learning about history, geographyand music. Each class learns a different dance andthen all classes learn one common dance, all of whichare performed at a culminating assembly program forthe school, parents and community. All classes per-form in full costume and each dance segment is intro-duced with a description of the country of origin andthe history of the dance. Dances can include: ChineseRibbon Dance, African Lion Dance, Russian Trepak,Highland Fling, Classical Japanese Fan Dance,Japanese Taiko Drumming, Cicerennella, Italian FolkDance, Australian Aboriginal Dance, French Minuet,Mexican Clap Dance, Merengue, Colonial dances andothers!
