THE organisers of an art exhibitionshowcasing the legendary SpringQueen pageant have had a “phenomenal” response to a picturerecently published in the Daily Voice.
The black and white photograph featuredfour unidentified women at a Spring Queenfinal in the late 1980s.
Organisers have been trying to track them downto be part of the highly successful exhibition.
“I couldn’t believe the response we got. Wemanaged to track down three of the five ladies in thephotographs,” project manager Dr Siona O’Connelltells the Daily Voice.
“The ladies in the pictureare all from Cape Town.Theycould barely recognise them-selves... All their factorieshave closed down and thatis very sad – only one of theladies still works in a factory.”
BestThat one is Alicia Luikes, 49,
of Bonteheuwel, an all-round-er at a CMT factory in Vasco.
“Seeing my picture in thepaper brought back so manygood memories – that was thebest time of my life,” the momof three says.
“My sister phoned me themorning to ask if I saw thepicture in the Daily Voice.
“I immediately went tobuy the paper and I felt so
overwhelmed.”Alicia started working in
the clothing industry whenshe was just 14. Like manyothers, she left school duringthe chaotic 1970s riots.
“This picture was taken in1988 at the Spring Queenfinals at the Good HopeCentre,” she recalls.
“I was 26 and representedCape Underwear. I was wearinga cerise dress, which I later gaveaway to another model. It wasvery exciting, the Spring Queenwas the biggest event in theclothing industry.”
“I was very sick that sameyear, I had TB and I thought Iwasn’t going to make it. But Ihad this boldness in me andat the pageant. That was mybreakthrough as a woman –
when you believe in yourselfit doesn’t matter where youcome from, if you set goals, they can come true.”
Siona says the queens willbe photographed and inter-viewed to become part of theexhibition which forms partof this year’s Spring Queenpageant at the Good HopeCentre on November 17.
It opens at the District SixMuseum a week later.
