ARTS, BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS(B.F.A.) WITH A CONCENTRATIONIN ART EDUCATIONThe Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts with a concentration in art educationis an approved teacher preparation program that complies with theprofessional standards of the Virginia Department of Education and theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is further accreditedby the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and theNational Association of Schools of Art and Design. All of these agenciesassure the highest professional program standards. Graduates of theprogram are eligible for Virginia teacher licensure to teach art in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

Learning outcomesUpon completing this program, students will know and know how to dothe following:

• Students will develop a professional philosophical position about therelevance and importance of art education.

• Students will implement/acquire a variety of art instructionalstrategies thata. reflect an understanding of the artistic, cognitive, emotional and

social development of children as well asb. national, state and local curricular standards andc. assessment techniques in order to meet the needs of diverse

learners.• Students will be able to create and adapt learning environments that

address the needs of all students.• Students will be able to design assessment methods to

a. measure student knowledge and skills,b. improve student learning andc. further professional practice.

• Students will teach art in ways that engage traditional andcontemporary artists (diverse in regards to gender, ethnicity, sexualidentity, social class and other dimensions of identity).

• Students will seek internships, service-learning positions and local,national and international experiences that lead to research anddeepen engagement with diverse communities.

Special requirementsAdmissionUndergraduate students admitted to the School of the Arts who havesuccessfully completed the Art Foundation Program (or the equivalentat another institution) are eligible to apply through the Department of ArtEducation to enter the program.

Transfer students and students currently attending VCU must havea minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be considered for departmentaladmission; however, there is a higher cumulative GPA requirement of 2.8for departmental admission to teacher preparation (see below for moreinformation).

Accepted studentsAccepted students are required to attend an orientation session withan academic adviser from the Department of Art Education. Transfer

students, second-degree-seeking students, double majors and changeof major students are required to meet with the administrative directorprior to beginning course work in the department. The name and contactinformation of academic advisers may be obtained from the Departmentof Art Education.

Art education policy of reasonable progressA student seeking a B.F.A. in Arts with a concentration in art educationwho does not enroll in courses in the major for three or more consecutivesemesters (not including summers) will be dismissed from the program.To continue in the program, students must reapply to the program,submitting a portfolio and undergoing a grade review. Declared doublemajors not enrolled in ARTE courses for three consecutive semesters (notincluding summers) are required to state their intention to continue themajor in writing to the chair.

Course failures and withdrawalsAll students must successfully complete the courses outlined in thecurriculum. Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all ARTEcourses. A student who earns a grade of D or F or withdraws from anyrequired course may repeat the course once. If a grade of D or F is earnedin the repeated course or if the student withdraws, the student will beterminated from the program. Students with special circumstances whowish to remain in the major must appeal to the chair and receive approvalin writing to continue in the program.

Cautionary statusIf a student’s GPA falls below a 2.8 or if a faculty member raises concernsabout a student’s professional disposition at any point, the student willbe put on cautionary status. The chair will review students designatedwith cautionary status each semester to determine continuation in theprogram. Students will be notified if they are placed on cautionary status.

Pre-teacher preparationDuring the first two semesters in the Department of Art Education,students should complete ARTE 310 during the fall semester andARTE 311 during the spring semester. Note: ARTE 310 is a prerequisite ofARTE 311.

Students will be required to register for and take the required Praxis Iexams (or show proof of exemption by official SAT or ACT score reports)and take the required Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessmentexam during ARTE 310. Students must successfully pass their Praxis Iand VCLA exams in order to be eligible for departmental admission intoteacher preparation (see below for further explanation). Any studentthat has not successfully passed the Praxis I exams by the time theycomplete ARTE 311 must set up a meeting with the department chair.

It is advised that students complete ARTE 250, EDUS 301 and SEDP 330or ARTE 450 during their first year in the Department of Art Education.

Teacher Preparation ProgramAll students are required to apply for teacher preparation duringARTE 311. Students who do not have passing test scores at that timewill be eligible to reapply in the fall for spring teacher prep admission.Students are granted provisional teacher prep acceptance pendingsuccessful second year review.

Applications are due to the administrative director by establisheddeadlines of each semester. If students do not complete their

applications on time with hard copies of passing score reports, they willnot be guaranteed enrollment in ARTE 401 the following semester.

Requirements for departmental admission to teacher preparation:

• Submission of completed Application to Teacher Preparation form byestablished deadline

• Minimum of 2.8 cumulative GPA• Successful completion of ARTE 310 and ARTE 311 (six credits)• Passing scores on required Praxis I exams or exemption with SAT or

ACT scores (www.ets.org (http://www.ets.org))• Passing scores on required VCLA• No record of a felony conviction• Completion of the Dispositions Acknowledgement Form (included

with departmental Application for Teacher Preparation)• Successful second-year review

Departmental admission to the Teacher Preparation Program is requiredfor enrollment in practicum courses (ARTE 401 and ARTE 402) andclinical internship (ARTE 404, TEDU 485 and TEDU 486). Note: ARTE 401is a prerequisite of ARTE 402. Enrollment is granted to ARTE 401 andARTE 402 through an override from the Department of Art Education.

Second-year reviewA review of student work, GPA and dispositions takes place at thecompletion of ARTE 311. Reviews are rated satisfactory unsatisfactoryor provisional. The student must receive a satisfactory or provisionalevaluation from the faculty to continue in the program. Students whoreceive provisional approval will be reviewed by the chair after eachpracticum to determine continuation in the program.

Students must register for and take the required Praxis II: Art ContentKnowledge exam (www.ets.org (http://www.ets.org)) before they applyfor clinical internship (student teaching).

During teacher preparation, students will continue to complete requiredart history, studio and general studies course work.

Clinical internshipAll students are required to complete a full semester of clinical internship(student teaching). Students must complete and submit an applicationto clinical internship by the established deadline in order to be eligible.If students do not complete their applications on time with hard copiesof passing score reports, they will not be guaranteed acceptance intoclinical internship. Students are granted provisional student teachingacceptance pending successful faculty practicum review.

Requirements for clinical internship:

• Departmental admission into the Teacher Preparation Program• Submission of completed departmental application for clinical

internship by established deadline• Successful completion of all other required course work• Minimum of 2.8 cumulative GPA• Minimum of 3.0 GPA in art education courses and no grade lower

than a C• Passing scores on the Praxis I or exemption with SAT or ACT scores• Passing scores on the Virginia Communication and Literacy

Assessment• Passing scores on the Praxis II: Art Content Knowledge exam

• Completion of the online Child Abuse Prevention training andcertification of successful completion

• Submission of a tuberculosis screening must accompany theapplication for clinical internship and must be dated no more than ayear from the expected date of completion of clinical internship

• Successful faculty practicum review

ARTE 250. Computer Technology in Art Education. 3 Hours.Semester course; 2 lecture and 3 studio hours. 3 credits. For arteducation majors only. The use of computer as a tool for creatingelectronic imagery, as a filtering mechanism for traditional media and todevelop teaching materials for the pre-K through 12th-grade classroom.The course includes an introduction to presentation technology, digitalimaging and Web page design. Ethical and copyright issues related tonew technologies will be addressed.

ARTE 301. Art for Elementary Teachers. 3 Hours.Continuous courses; 1 lecture, 1 seminar and 2 studio hours. 3-3 credits.Prerequisite: completion of ARTE 301 to enroll in ARTE 302. The natureof art and its function in the lives of individuals and society is consideredin addition to materials and methods for guiding the visual expression ofchildren.

ARTE 302. Art for Elementary Teachers. 3 Hours.Continuous courses; 1 lecture, 1 seminar and 2 studio hours. 3-3 credits.Prerequisite: completion of ARTE 301 to enroll in ARTE 302. The natureof art and its function in the lives of individuals and society is consideredin addition to materials and methods for guiding the visual expression ofchildren.

ARTE 310. Foundations of Art Education. 3 Hours.Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. For art education majorsonly or by approval of the department chair. An examination of arteducation within the curricular structure of educational programs andthe developmental growth of children. Students will explore the historical,philosophical and sociological foundations of art in education, includingart education's development and current roles.

ARTE 311. Art Education Curriculum and Instructional Procedures. 3Hours.Semester course; 2 lecture and 3 studio hours. 3 credits. Prerequisite:ARTE 310. For art education majors only. A study of the principles oflearning, instruction and curriculum in art education programs. Studentswill develop teaching competencies through micro-teaching experiences,analysis of instructional methods and writing units of study.

ARTE 401. Art Education Elementary Materials and Practicum. 4 Hours.Semester course; 3 lecture and 3 studio hours. 4 credits. Prerequisites:UNIV 200 or HONR 200, admission to the art teacher preparationprogram and completion of ARTE 311. For art education majors onlyor by the approval of the department chair. A preparatory experiencewith observation and participation in art programs in elementary gradesprior to student teaching. This course explores art materials, techniquesand teaching methods suitable for this level; and analyzes evaluationstrategies appropriate for art.

ARTE 402. Art Education Secondary Materials and Practicum. 4 Hours.Semester course; 3 lecture and 3 studio hours. 4 credits. Prerequisites:admission to the art teacher preparation program and completion ofARTE 311. For art education majors only or by approval of departmentchair. A preparatory experience with observation and participation inart programs in middle school, secondary school and nontraditionalsettings prior to student teaching. This course explores art materialsand techniques suitable for these levels, examines developmentalperformance levels and analyzes evaluation methods appropriate for art.Writing intensive.

ARTE 404. Clinical Internship Seminar. 1 Hour.Semester course; 1 seminar hour. 1 credit. Corequisites: TEDU 485 and486. For art education majors only. Capstone experience. A seminarconcurrent with clinical internship (student teaching) that gives studentsan opportunity to discuss and evaluate their progress in teachingassignments and other related activities.

ARTE 407. Photography in Art Education. 3 Hours.Semester course; 1 lecture and 2 studio hours. 3 credits. A generalintroduction to the technical, theoretical and historical issues related tophotography. Taught as a seminar and workshop teaching both digitaland traditional camera functions, photographic terms, concepts, history,technique and alternative processes applicable to K-12 education.

ARTE 408. Two-dimensional Art Experiences. 3 Hours.Semester course; 1 seminar and 4 studio hours. 3 credits. Open toart education majors only. Students will explore the two-dimensionaltraditional and emerging media that are relevant to teaching. The focuswill be contemporary methods and conceptual approaches to visualmeaning-making.

ARTE 409. Three-dimensional Art Experiences. 3 Hours.Semester course; 1 seminar and 4 studio hours. 3 credits. Open to arteducation majors only. Students will explore the three-dimensionaltraditional and emerging media that are relevant to teaching. The focuswill be contemporary methods and conceptual approaches to visualmeaning-making.

ARTE 450. Art for the Exceptional Student. 3 Hours.Semester course; 2 lecture and 3 studio hours. 3 credits. Prerequisite:ARTE 311. For art education majors only. A study of the uniquecharacteristics of exceptional students as related to involvement in thearts. The course examines disabled, aged, gifted, talented and otherexceptional learners, and may include practicum and field experiences.

ARTE 491. Special Topics. 3 Hours.Semester course; variable hours. Variable credit. May be repeated for amaximum of 9 credits with different content. A seminar and/or workshopoffered on a variety of art education issues not included in the regularcurriculum. See the Schedule of Classes for specific topics to be offeredeach semester.

ARTE 492. Independent Study. 1-6 Hours.Semester course; variable hours. 1-6 credits per semester. May berepeated for a maximum total of 6 credits. Prerequisites: consent ofdepartment chair and instructor. Offered to art education majors only.This course will be limited to those few students who have demonstratedan exceptional level of ability and intense commitment to a particulararea.

ARTE 493. Internship. 1-6 Hours.Semester course; variable hours. 1-6 credits. May be repeated for amaximum total of 6 credits. Consent of department chair required.Offered to art education majors only. This service-learning course isdesigned to encourage students to seek internships with organizationsthat lead to research in art education and deepen engagement withdiverse communities. Students must secure departmental approval forinternships the semester prior to registration. International internshipsmust register with the Education Abroad office.

ARTE 494. International Field Experience. 1-6 Hours.Semester course; variable hours. 1-6 credits. Education Abroadapplication and consent of instructor required. Open to all students.This course is designed to facilitate student interactions with artsorganizations in international settings that lead to research in arteducation and deepen engagement with diverse communities.
