August: the forgotten month
Remember when August used to be fun? For teachers it was the last of the great three
month break. Many vacations were planned in August. Swimming pools bustled with excitement. As I write this article, the back to school displays have been up for two weeks (since the day after the 4th of July).
August is a forgotten month, my wife’s birthday and our anniversary notwithstanding. Every other month
has a holiday-like celebration; but, not August.
Pastor Kari and I making the following proposal to add some cheer to the forgotten month. We are declaring Sunday the 10th of August “Old Time
Hymn” day. At all three services we will sing hymns from a bygone era! Check out the hymn book and its variety of “Gospel” hymns. There will be forms for you to list 3 favorites from the book (we will include
some nominations) and on the 4th of August we in the office will tally the top choices and include them in the
three liturgies on the 9th and 10th. We will even supplement the liturgy to create our own version of
Luther’s chorale service using the old standards.
Don’t let August, “the new January” get you down. There are lots of reasons to celebrate. Among them is the promise of the good news of Jesus that is constant,
and will carry us through all seasons
August, “this is the month the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it!”
In Christ, Pastor Bill

Wanted: A New sound system for the sanctuary!
As you may have noticed, we’ve had frequent problems and
breakdowns with our current mikes and sound system, and
one speaker has been in use since the 1980’s. Thanks to
diligent research and effort by Nick Ross, your church
Council has reviewed several bids and chosen one that
seems to be the best fit and value. The approximate cost of
all phases will be $36,000, and we are asking for donations
from the congregation to meet this need. Gifts may be given
in honor or memory of a loved one, and these will be
acknowledged in the bulletin. Please note ‘sound system’
on any donation. The Council thanks you for
your consideration of this need.

CHRISTIAN LITERACY AUGUST 2014 Christian Literacy, St. John’s Literacy Mission to the World, has been
headquartered in the “Second Floor Apartment” since 1975. Staff: Dr. Bill and Linda Kofmehl, Chris and Jennie Ebner, Rebecca Pirone, and a host of volunteers.
call 412-364-3777. Websites: christianliteracy.com and literacyempowers.com Christian Literacy continues to reach out locally, nationally, and internationally from the second floor "apartment" - If you would like to
"see the Doctor", please call 412-364-3777. Contact the office at 412-364-3777 if you need literacy help for a child or adult.
Ah, Summer. A time for vacations, picnics, gardening and enjoying the warm sun after a long, nasty winter. It is also the time for Christian Literacy Summer
Reading Programs! This year, in addition to the 36 hour Summer Reading Camps offered by churches to "at-risk" youngsters completing first through fourth grade, and
the "live-in" Reading Camp experiences at Camp Agape in Hickory, PA, C.L.A. is involved in the final "testing" of the BLOOM Program (Basic Literacy Outreach
Opening Minds). Two successful classes for children completing Pre-K or Kindergarten have already been held by CLA staff members at Community Alliance
Church in Butler and St. John's of Highland (site of our office in the North Hills). Following each week-long program, a workshop was held for the parents or
caregivers of the students to train them in the further use of Christian Literacy materials with their children. One young lady, an "au pair" from Sweden, was very
pleased with the training and indicated that she would make her fellow "au pair" child care workers aware of it so they could help their children this summer. An additional BLOOM program will be held by our staff in August at St. John's, and one at Christ
Episcopal Church in Ross Township will be conducted by the Pre-K staff of the church after their training by Chis and Jennie Ebner. This year, the training of parents and subsidizing of CLA camps has been generously funded by THRIVENT Financials
"Action Teams". We look forward to assisting congregations outside the Pittsburgh area in setting up Christian Literacy "outreaches" through the "Action Teams" when the concept goes nationwide in early Fall. For forty years we have wished we could
provide materials at no cost to the churches who want to start programs, but "no printer could ever print the books for free". Now, through THRIVENT's fraternal
benefit association, Lutheran churches (initially) will be able to use an Action Team headed by one policy holder to have two $250 visa debit cards available to obtain the
Christian Literacy materials needed to offer BLOOM programs, Summer Reading Camps, and parent tutor training workshops.
Outside the model program area: Our staff recently shipped ten Christian Literacy texts to C.L.A. trainer Shirley Wms. McPherson to assist her in training tutors for those students with disabilities in the Phoenix AZ area (through Joni and Friends
International Ministry to the Disabled).
Overseas efforts: Chris Ebner and Dr. Bill meet with the country director for the EDUNATIONS organization in Sierre Leone, Africa. He was brought to our office
during his visit to one of our supporting churches here in the North Hills. "Samuel" would like to use CLA materials to teach adults to read English (the official language) in the villages where his organization has planted schools for children. Ninety percent of the adult population is illiterate. The newly literate adults in these villages would be
able to emphasize the importance of education to the children.
Yours in the Lord's Work,
“Dr. Bill” and Linda Kofmehl and the C.L.A. Staff and volunteers

present a Jazz Cabaret at St. Barnabas. The performances
will take place at the Kean Theatre annex – the Mt. Vernon
Room – at Washington Place. Located at 5847 Meridian
Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044. This will be a retro presentation
of the jazz cabaret genre – a place where one can sit back, relax, and listen to
music from the “Great American songbook”.
There will be a cash bar with adult beverages and soft drinks. Free savory
appetizers will be provided, as well as free parking. Tickets are $25.00 per
couple, $12.50 per person. The series started on Wednesday, July 30, 2014,

St. Barnabas provides free nursing care in the amount of 6.3 million dollars
annually for the financially indigent patients in our facilities. Any monies
accrued from our cabaret will go to the Free Care Fund.
Please join us in bringing back cabaret jazz as it was meant to be heard in a
quiet romantic setting with other jazz lovers and friends.

PUB THEOLOGY

Pub Theology is back this summer. We will meet at the Bistro 9101,

topics that connect faith and life.
Topic is to be determined!
TO PARENTS WITH CHILDREN KINDERGARTEN AGE & YOUNGER!
The first thing we would like to say is thank you for coming to church with
your children – we are so glad that they are here as that is how they learn! The
other thing that some of you may not know is that we do offer a service during
the 10:30 worship called Kids Corner for any kids kindergarten age and under
that need childcare. It takes place in the preschool daycare room, which is also
the 2 and 3 year old Sunday school classroom, through the door on the left at
the front of the sanctuary. This is certainly not a requirement as we love to
have kids in church at St. John’s; however, it is an option for parents who are
interested in this. Each week the Kids Corner is staffed by a teenager of the
congregation, as well as an adult volunteer. The other thing that we wanted
to let parents know is that volunteers are really needed to help with the
adult supervision role. Right now we have three adults who faithfully help
out, however we would like to get some more adults involved so that those
three volunteers have more opportunity to worship. The parents of those who
utilize this service seemed like a logical place to start to ask for help. If we are
able to get about 5 more volunteers, then each person would only have to help
out about once every other month. If you are willing and able to do this on an
occasional Sunday, please let Pastor Kari or Debbie, our office manager
know. The church office # is 412-364-1606 and the
email is [email protected]. Thanks for your consideration
and for your partnership in ministry!
Your kids are a joy and a blessing to our church!
