6TH MAY 2014 NORTH’S NEWS 2014 North Kalgoorlie Primary ANZAC CEREMONY The 10 th of April saw NKPS celebrate our ANZAC’s and service men and women both past and present. The attendance of SGT Henry Hatch and ex-serviceman Mr David Elson was a much appreciated feature of our ceremony . The flag raising was guarded by Captain (AAC) Taylor-Grills and Cadet Taylor-Grills, together with FLTLT (AAFC) Leslie and CCPL Casas, who played The Last Post and The Rouse so well. Wreath laying was a highlight of the ceremony, with every class having prepared a wreath which was laid by two class members. The children did this beautifully and very respectfully. Well done and thanks to staff and senior students who assisted with the organising of the those students. To our staff, parents and other visitors, thankyou for attending and helping to make North Kalgoorlie Primary School’s 2014 ANZAC DAY Commemoration such a meaningful one. She says “It’s very rewarding seeing the kids who have left school and then gone on to achieve greatness in their chosen field”. Susie’s chief motivation for her long career was for her dear father who was the Deputy Principal at Eastern Goldfields Senior High School in 1968 who always said “What ever you do Susie, keep on with the job”. Her mother has also been very inspirational as well. Susie is very happy to have found a great job that challenges her and gives her great joy on a daily basis. She is looking forward to many more years ahead as retirement is not yet in the foreseeable future.

Congratulate and Celebrate

Congratulations to Susan Pannell for 15 years service which started at

South Kalgoorlie Primary School.

The department transferred her to North Kalgoorlie Primary School on

March 6, 14 years ago to be closer to her home.

She has seen many staff and students come and go over the years and has

also seen the school go through many changes throughout her time here.

Susie enjoys the job and the daily contact with the parents and children.

She says “It’s very rewarding seeing the kids who have left school and

Susie’s chief motivation for her long career was for her dear father who

was the Deputy Principal at Eastern Goldfields Senior High School in

1968 who always said “What ever you do Susie, keep on with the job”.

Susie is very happy to have found a great job that challenges her and gives

Winter Uniforms

The cooler months are upon us and doubtless school jumpers and tracksuits have been taken out of mothballs

and ready for use. The expectation of students at North Kal is to wear full school uniform, including correct

jumpers or tops. If a student is regularly wearing incorrect attire then a notice will be sent home informing of

the need to wear the uniform. Our uniform shop is stocked and open for business on Thursday afternoons (2.45

-3.00pm) and Friday assemblies. The school’s uniform policy is to be reviewed shortly by the school council

and will be distributed in another newsletter.

Upcoming Costs

At the end of the school year, families are given information on the fees and charges for the following year.

We endeavour to spread out these costs and manage the amount of fundraising and support for charities so that

families aren’t hit with too many costs or requests at the same time. The P&C and camp fundraising committee

have been very conscious of this and built a lot of their fundraising around providing a service (e.g. sausage

sizzles, car washes). Some significant costs are coming up shortly that families will need to be aware of, in

particular those with Year 6 & 7 students. School photos (up to $45) will be here on 11-12th June, Year 6 & 7

camp (up to $600) in August and September and swimming lessons ($70) in September.

NAPLAN

Next week is testing time for Years 3, 5 & 7 students in the annual National Assessment Program in Literacy

and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Testing takes place on Tuesday—Thursday, with Friday as a catch up day for

those who were absent. The results of this provide good information for parents and teachers alike and in con-

junction with teacher assessments and professional judgements, gives a full picture of a child’s achievement

and progress. We ensure students are prepared for testing but keep it a profile where anxiety doesn’t become

an issue. The school’s performance in NAPLAN will be made public later in the year

School Development Day

On the first day back for teachers this term we undertook professional learning in the following:

Maths - basic number facts, Kids Matter (mental health program), positive behaviour in schools and school

spelling program. Our school chaplain, Jaco Classen also worked with our staff on some team building activi-

ties. These days provide school staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to impart on our students.
