SYDNEY LIGHT RAIL - BUS ROUTE CHANGES

For all information regarding the changes to bus routes in and around High Street Randwick, please

refer to the College website or CLICK HERE

From the Deputy Headmaster

It has been a wonderfully positive start to the school year, with Term One being one of the busiest I can remember. Whilst this is now one of the new realities of school life, we will continue to review and, if possible, refine the structure of our school year. Furthermore, many boys continued to be involved in important community activities and organisations such as surf life saving or coaching and refereeing. In light of this, I would like to thank all our Marcellin parents and guardians for the work they do in balancing the needs and demands of family life with those of the College. Hopefully, Term Two is a little quieter, but please make sure you continue to check the calendar on the College website for upcoming events just the same.

There is currently a great deal of disruption to traffic in Randwick as a result of the Light Rail construction. As of this week, the direction of traffic in some streets has altered, bus routes have changed and some bus stops have been completely relocated. We have some very useful and up to date information regarding these changes on the College website - the link is provided below. If you think your son’s travel to and from school may be affected, then please have a look at the information posted.

Term Two commences on Wednesday, 26 April and boys are to return to school in full winter uniform.

Have a wonderful Easter break.

4 MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK NEWSLETTER

Nearing the completion of our Core Topic “Crime” for the HSC Legal Studies course, it was timely opportunity for Year 12 Legal Studies to see firsthand the working of both the Local and District Courts at the Downing Centre in the city...

It was quite a confronting experience to enter one of the district courts to be part of the public gallery. The idea of entering any court case and seeing someone’s future under scrutiny suddenly hit me. The case was for the charge of an aggravated robbery. During examination of witnesses (police officers from the State Protection group), we listened as they were cross examined by the defence’s barrister. This included asking what the range and strength of the flashlight on their rifles was, the lighting and light source of the house, the size and material of a fence, what they said word for word during the search warrant and if the socks they found in a bag were in a ball or loose.

The Police officer came under fire for saying “show me your hands” to the suspect when the suspect’s hands were already on a fence. Another police officer came inside the court and swore an oath, then was asked to give his name, rank, role and location during the search warrant. For both witnesses, the defence lawyers referred to their reports and were asking the witness to verify their account.

George Bakos Year 12

The Downing Centre is a major court complex located in the City housing Local and District courts. It was an overwhelming experience that finally put our endless book of notes into real life. It was eerily similar to the depictions seen in movies and TV, but unearthly slower. There were barristers, judges, magistrates and jurors all part of the court personnel. In the court room, prosecutors would shout out their words of attack and defenders would respond. When witnesses were examined, every detail was nit-picked to absolute perfection.

One thing that stood out to me was how many of the offenders seemed like normal hardworking people, but as a result of their bad decisions, their lives had been turned inside out. There were those accused of crimes such as sexual assault, armed robbery and drug offenses. Another part that staggered me were the waiting times in the court system. Crimes committed one or two years ago are now only being heard. In addition, the verdict may have been that they are guilty and yet they will have to wait months before the sentencing. I think this is a traumatic experience for both the offender and the victims. Overall, the most exciting part of the experience was seeing the reality hidden behind our notes and textbook; everything we talk about in class is real and is being played out in the courts daily.

Year 11 Biology Excursion

The Biology field excursion was conducted at Bonna Point on the southern side of Botany Bay. We were there to study the unique ecosystem of sand dunes and salt marshes that dominate this area of the coast. The first thing you realise when you arrive is the massive impact that humans have on the environment. The constant aeroplanes landing at the airport and the infrastructure of Port Botany are a reminder of how we have disturbed the local ecosystem in this area.

The main goal of the day was to measure different abiotic, or non-living, factors of the area. The guides split the classes up into three groups and we were placed into teams of five. Within these teams we were shown how to use various types of equipment for measuring humidity, salinity, pH, etc. We measured these factors at three different areas within the ecosystem and compared the results. We found this to be quite difficult due to the heat but we managed to get through it and get all the results needed.

The highlight of the day was when we carried out a catch and release of marching soldier crabs within the mangroves. The crabs were quite small and were difficult to get hold of. We used booklets from our guides to identify the species of crab by looking at its structural features. We then released the crabs unhurt back into the mangrove bushes. We also used large nets to catch different species of moth and other insects which we able to identify.

After a long day in the hot weather, we were all happy to be back on the bus and on our way back to school. Overall it we found it to be a very informative day and we got to see some cool things. We would like to thank the teachers and guides for a great excursion.

74 APRIL 2017

This is a prestigious event chosen for secondary school leaders from schools around New South Wales. We were given an insight into the workings of our state government, with addresses and meetings with The NSW Premier, Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Luke Foley, as well as local members of parliament from the Inner West. We were told about how these members entered into the political battlefield, how we as young adults can foster change and how we can help our local community.

In addition to Parliament House, we were also given a tour of Government House, the home of His Excellency General The Hon. David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales. We were priviledged to meet His Excellency. He explained his role and how he became Governor, and his talk gave us a sense of what it’s like to be a leader and how much pressure there is being in such an important role. Both His Excellency and his wife were very kind, leaving time for questions and even allowing Jaysen to play their piano (used by many famous musicians).

Overall, it was one of the greatest experiences of our schooling life so far, giving us many insights into leadership and what we can do to become better leaders. Meeting such high profile figures enabled us to understand the demands of public life, and encouraged us to rise to the challenges of contributing to the world in which we live.

From The Sports Coordinator

On Thursday March 30, our Cross Country team competed in the MCC Championships at Rozelle in wet and windy conditions. After training for 7 weeks, Marcellin were the winners of the aggregate trophy for the 13th consecutive year. Congratulations to all our competitors on their excellent results and we wish the boys who finished in the top 8, the best of luck in the CCC championships in June.

Last Friday 31st March, we presented our MCC Best and Fairest and Most Improved Players at our Summer Sports Assembly. Mr Anthony Maroon, an ex-student who graduated in 1983 was our special guest. Anthony is now part of the Triple M Call Team calling Rugby League each weekend. He delivered some wonderfully positive advice to the boys and we thank him for taking the time to be our guest. Congratulations to all the boys who received awards and a special thanks to all coaches who have assisted throughout the summer.

On Thursday we had 24 boys contest the Marcellin Surfing Championships at Maroubra Beach. After being cancelled the day before due to the rough surf, the boys had excellent conditions. Congratulations to Kyle O’Sullivan who won the Under 16’s event and to Zac Michael for winning the Under 19’s. A team will now be chosen to compete in May next term.

Our Rugby League and Soccer trials continued and our teams are developing nicely for their first official trial in Week 1 of Term 2 against Ryde. Teams will be selected after this game
