required, or Collaboration with peers, or some extra Observations and Questions about the topic would provide a way through. The metaphor of looking through our backpack and choosing a learner tool to suit the situation is exactly what the ‘Thinking-Monitor Habit’ is all about. Learning & Support @WRPS At West Ryde PS, we are very fortunate to have a very proactive, supportive Learning and Support Team that works with students, staff and parents to provide support to students in the academics, as well as the social, emotional and behavioural areas of their learning. The LST focuses support in the classroom and in withdrawal groups in the English and mathematics curriculum and many other areas. The LST consists of Mrs Hutton (Assistant Principal Learning & Support), Mrs Taylor (School Counsellor), Mrs Lieu (LaST), Ms A Lee as well as the classroom teacher and assistant principal for any student being reviewed. Parents play an important role in our Learning & Support process and are consulted prior to referral. If you have concerns about your child’s progress, the first port of call is always your child’s classroom teacher. We can then work together to find the most appropriate way to support your child. Sakuna Pho Library News

On September 5th, the Library Monitors Video Project Team had a very successful Skype English lesson with students in Afghanistan. It was lunchtime in Australia and early in the morning over there. The students attend school from 6.30-8.30am and are taught by volunteer tutors. These tutors are studying courses such as midwifery or communications during the daytime. Our Library Monitors asked the students in Afghanistan a lot of questions, so that the students there could practise their English. It was very enjoyable to meet up by Skype and is part of a project in which the Library Monitors have been demonstrating simple English circle games to support the tutors in their volunteer teaching.

Marsden science Day

On Thursday 5th September, 23 students from years 4-6 attended a science morning at Marsden High School. The students participated in ten different science experiments that showcased a range of chemical reactions and gave students a firsthand look at some of the learning they will undertake in high school.

The experiments were run by year 7-9 students from Marsden, many of whom are past students of West Ryde. It was not only fantastic to see the current West Ryde students engaged in science, but seeing the past students displaying excellent leadership and scientific knowledge as well.

It was a wonderful morning and was enjoyed by all. We look forward to attending again next year.

Mr Maggs

Senior Girls and Boys PSSA Softball So we finally got back to PSSA Softball to complete our summer series that we began in Term 1. Thankfully we started with a home game. We versed Putney Public School. The girls, while defeated 1-0, were complemented by the Putney coach stating that “WRPS really should have won this one” as we did dominate the play throughout the game but were just unlucky on the run count. Neha was back in fine form with some fantastic pitching along with taking an awesome catch. Antonia can be congratulated for being brave and taking on the challenge to be our catcher and what a mighty fine job she did! Anne’s dedication to learning how to play each position she is placed in is inspiring. There was some fantastic running between bases by Zoe and Abby, hopefully next game we will see that kind of effort and skill turn into runs on the board. I’m so very proud of you girls...keep up the great team spirit! As for the boys it was a battle against the clock...unfortunately, despite their grand comeback in the final innings...the clock won and the score reverted back to even innings where we were defeated 2-0. In the innings that didn’t count, we had some outstanding batting and some rocket runners. Throughout the game, Jamie demonstrated great perseverance as he was our solo pitcher for the day. Sean had a stellar game on First Base taking out a number of runners headed his way. Adbiel certainly deserves the bravery award for the boys as he did a great job learning the ropes as catcher. Heads up WRPS Senior Softballers...let’s make the next game our best one yet! Ms Spencer, Senior Boys and Senior Girls Softball Coach

P&C News

Father’s Day stall

I hope the dads, granddads and uncles had a fabulous Father’s Day. I would love to hear about what your children bought for you and what whether you are using it already! My kids brought home a travel mug, phone case, pen and of course one of Amy’s scrumptious creations...rocky road! What is your secret Amy?

I totally enjoyed helping at the stall on the day and I can’t stress enough what a great community we have here at our school. Smiling faces were constantly helping children choose the best gifts for their dads. Christine you rock! Thanks for handling the Mother’s Day and the Father’s Day stalls for 2 years! Thanks to our lovely volunteers who turned up on the day! We couldn’t have done it without you!

Thank you Kirsty, Fiona, Bec, Amy, Stephanie, Sunit, Ki, Vicky, Maria, Li, Carol, Pika, Tracy, Clare and Lakshmi.

I am sorry if you helped out but your picture isn’t here. Sometimes the stalls get too busy and the volunteers just forget to smile at the camera!

North Shore Primary schools Band Festival

On Friday, 6th September, the WRPS Band played in the North Shore Primary Schools Festival. It was one of the smallest groups to perform but the children did an exemplary job. Some of the participating schools had huge 40 piece bands, however, our 13 member band proudly played 3 pieces to the best of their abilities and thoroughly impressed the judges.

The judges comments included:

“You've clearly put in a lot of work into preparation for this piece. I'm really impressed by your performance. Thankyou!" "Courageous work Band. Well done." “This is an intimate sized group. That means we don’t have any passengers. When we have one or two per part, everybody is exposed. You can even hear everybody breathe!” Great job Aaryaman, Aanshi, Anay, Dhanuskha, Leighton, Zara, Eric J, Alex, Francis, Colin, Yvette, Sean, Eric C and Ivy.

Did you know that the WRPS band program is managed by the P&C?

The participation of our school band in this festival or any other event would not have been possible without the help of Nathan Chang. Like you and me, Nathan is a school parent, who goes the extra mile in making sure that the band program is run effectively in the school. Nathan coordinates with the school staff, the band instructors and the parents to make sure that we have all the information related to the band. On behalf of the wider school community, I would like to say a “Big Thank you” to Nathan for organising the whole band program. I can’t thank you

enough for all the time and effort that you put in this program Nathan. The band would be lost without you!

Spring Disco

Are you ready??

I hope you are all looking forward to the Disco party in your own school this Friday. Professional DJ, face painting, community dances, game stalls, food trucks, henna stalls and lots of fun! On behalf of the P&C, I invite you and your family to come and be a part of this fun event. Just wear your dancing shoes and turn up at 5PM. Entry from Mons Avenue gate only.

Please note that the next P&C Meeting has been moved to the 4th Wednesday, instead of the 3rd Wednesday of the month as requested by the school. Please mark your calendars now. I look forward to seeing you all in the last meeting of term 3!

Many Thanks
