Page 1: Analysing magazines

Front CoverThe title on this page is written in a bold font with stand out bright red colouring. This makes it the first piece of text that you spot on the page insuring the readers that its potentially the most important thing for them to know.

The next thing that they are likely to spot is the font stating “The GAME” and then the subtitle just below it. This informs readers of what the main focus of the magazine is about, and what subjects the article is likely to cover. This particular magazine tells us that the main focus is on artist The Game.

Also, the text “The Game” and the subtitle differ in font compared to the rest of the writing on the cover, almost suggesting that the artist has personalised it themselves or that it relates to the artist in some way.

The other texts surrounding the page are in a much smaller case, suggesting that they aren’t focused on as much but they are still important enough to mention on the front cover as they are likely to attract an audience.

The image on the front cover is of artist The Game holding a gun to his head, which relates to the subtitle “Suicide is not an option”. This portrays the mood of the article very well as it comes across as quite depressing which I believe was the intention of the designers behind this.

The background is simply a grey wall, nothing that could in any way be connected to glamour or stardom, instead appearing to be quite gritty and dirty. Again this is connected to the overall feel of the front cover.

Finally the various gang tattoos suggest not only what background the artist has come from, but overall what kind of artist he is now, and this allows the reader to judge whether or not they are going to be interested in buying a music magazine solely based on the genre that the artist clearly portrays.

Contents PageThe text on this page is spread out all over, with images placed around it. This separates the font into sections rather than having it directed down one side of the page. This suggests that it is important to differentiate the text to highlight the many parts of the magazine.

Also the text has 3 subheadings, revealing what it is that the reader can expect when looking through the magazine, and making it easier for them to find what they’re interested in.

Places where the writing is bold on the page such as the top, is used to highlight key info about the magazine that it is important for the reader to know. For example, the issue number, and the page that the reader is looking at.

Certain pieces of text are in a different colour and style of font, suggesting that they differ from the rest of the text in terms of how they link to the page and the information they show.

Finally the text revealing the content of the magazine is laid out so that it is easy to directly find that source of information in the magazine and is also split into various paragraphs, giving a brief description of what you’ll expect on this page(s).

The imagery shown on this page is laid out so that it fits nicely around the text, rather than stacking it in blocks on the page. This makes it look a lot more professional and so that the images almost belong to the magazine, rather than a movie and have been copied.

Double Page SpreadThe image on the spread goes across two pages, emphasising the proportions of the picture and making it look a lot more attractive to the reader. A second image is also placed just below it, this compacts the pages further and adds additional information to the article. The image is quite tightly squeezed at the bottom, however, it does make the overall look of the spread appear more complex and is a bonus for the audience, which is a lot more professional than leaving it out. One image also overlaps on top of the other one,

as well as several text boxes and the title. This suggests that a page doesn’t require every image or piece of text to have its own space, and that you shouldn’t worry about sizing and structuring too much, as you are capable of overlapping and still making it look professional.

The title on the page is in bold, blue font and is the only text on the page to be so. This highlights the importance and relevance of the title to the article. Also the text below it is in a much smaller case, suggesting that there is a lot to say about the movie and that its in more precise detail. The text on these pages is also split up into sections, possibly discussing different aspects of the film or photo’s displayed.
