Assessment

There will be a series of lessons over the next 2-3 weeks, where we will investigate global warming and the green house effect.

The assessment will be in the form an essay which will be no more than 4 A4 sides. This must be completed during lessons, however you are able to research at home and then bring it in.

This will count for 10% of your GCSE grade!

Assessment

1.What is the difference between inhanced warming and natural warming?

2.Who is in favour of trying to control this warming, and why?

Who is against trying to control this warming and why?

Assessment

• 3. What do I think? Justify with evidence.

• 4. What could be done as an individual?

Assessment

• You will then have 2 lessons to piece together this information in the form of an essay. It will be a maximum of 4 A4 sides and must be completed in class. Your essay may be typed up at home but a draft written copy must be shown to me first.

• You will be given a brief concerning what will be required.

What is global warming and how is it caused?

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans.

Increasing global temperatures will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation across the earth. Other likely effects include increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, changes in agricultural yields, modifications of trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinctions and increases in disease.

The Greenhouse effect

1. Solar radiation passes through the clear atmosphere.

2. Some solar radiation is reflected by the atmosphere and the earths surface.

3. Some of the infrared radiation passes through the atmosphere and is lost to space.

4. Some of the infrared radiation is absorbed and re-emmitted by the green house gas molecules. The direct effect is the warming of the earth’s surface and its troposphere.

5. Some energy is absorbed by the earth’s surface and warms it, converting it to heat causing the emmission of long wave radiation (infrared) back in to the atmosphere.

The Greenhouse summary• Greenhouse gases, which include water vapor,

carbon dioxide and methane, warm the atmosphere by efficiently absorbing thermal infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface.

• As a result of its warmth, the atmosphere also radiates thermal infrared in all directions, including downward to the Earth’s surface.

• Thus, greenhouse gases trap heat within the surface-troposphere system. As concentrations of greenhouse gasses increase, so does the earth’s average temperature.
