You have heard it said…But I say

We need to ask God for the courage to

accept what we are hearing straight from

the mouth of Jesus, even though it may

conflict with our own views based on

“what we have heard, or what we always

thought.”

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 1 - 2 6

"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and

whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.' But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother

without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 1 - 2 6

And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in

danger of hell fire.

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 1 - 2 6

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your

brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your

brother, and then come and offer your gift.

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 1 - 2 6

Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

Attitudes lead to actions!

❖ Selfish anger is always wrong

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 1 - 2 2

"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and

whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.' But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother

without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

E p h e s i a n s 4 : 2 6 - 2 7

"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give

place to the devil.

When is anger wrong?

• Selfish anger is always wrong

who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him

who judges righteously;

1 C o r i n t h i a n s 9 : 1 9

For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I

might win the more;

When is anger wrong?

• Selfish anger is always wrong

• Quick anger is wrong

J a m e s 1 : 1 9

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow

to wrath

P r o v e r b s 2 9 : 1 1

A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.

When we are quick-tempered we don’t allow

ourselves time to reflect on what the other

person is saying, why they are saying it, or

whether there may be any truth in what they

are saying. We must slow down to consider

what is really taking place.

When is anger wrong?

• Selfish anger is wrong

• Quick anger is wrong

• Lasting anger is wrong

E p h e s i a n s 4 : 2 6 - 2 7

"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give

place to the devil.

When we won’t let go of anger, little

things turn into big things.

H e b r e w s 1 2 : 1 5

looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of

bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

R o m a n s 1 2 : 1 7 - 2 1

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends

on you, live peaceably with all men.

R o m a n s 1 2 : 1 7 - 2 1

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will

repay," says the Lord.

R o m a n s 1 2 : 1 7 - 2 1

Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." Do not be overcome by evil,

but overcome evil with good.

When is anger wrong?• Selfish anger is wrong

• Quick anger is wrong

• Lasting anger is wrong

• You CAN control your anger

P s a l m 7 3 : 8

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret--it only causes harm.

Lasting anger is a choice

• Selfish anger is always

wrong

❖ It is never okay to insult someone

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 2

And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in

danger of hell fire.

Contempt Defined:

I am better than you. You have little worth.

P s a l m 1 4 : 1

The fool has said in his heart there is no God

You are accountable for words spoken

in anger.

• Selfish anger is always

wrong

• It is never okay to insult

someone

❖ Address unresolved issues

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 3 - 2 4

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your

gift.

God cares way more about your heart

than He does about your money!

H e b r e w s 1 2 : 1 4 - 1 5

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see

the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become

defiled;

“Pursue peace” should be the theme of

every marriage

Your relationship with others affects

your relationship with God

• Selfish anger is always

wrong

• It is never okay to insult

someone

• Address unresolved issues

❖ Small things can turn into big things

M a t t h e w 5 : 2 5 - 2 6

Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. Assuredly, I

say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

If Jesus was willing to take the blame

for something He did not do to restore

a relationship that was broken, then we

should be willing to do the same.

Relationships are more important than

rights

1 P e t e r 4 : 9

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of

sins.

Love God. Love People.
