presentations. The first spiritual thoughts, enquiry and findings evolved

in the plain of the holy Gag, where our ancestors found safe shelter,

their haven, greeted by the rivers perennial grace.

We have developed a certain culture andtradition, which has its roots in the Vedic

thoughts. We have enquired about and

discovered the ultimate Presence, from which the

whole creation has emanated. It is the source of

all experience and knowledge. Whatever

fondness and loyalty our people felt and expressed towards this one

Source, got naturally extended to Gag and Himalayas, to whom theyowed their existence, growth and civilization.

The water of this holy river has its rare purity and benedictory note,

descending from the sublime, sacred snow-capped Himalayas. The special

properties of this adored river are apparently derived from the ice-clad

peaks, and the multi-potent herbal plants and trees abounding in the

Himalayan slopes it crosses. The source of all medicines and curativedrugs is the earth with its assorted herbs, minerals and salts.

It is natural that our ancient people fostered untold fondness, gratitude

and adoration towards Gag. This is what any loving and loyal heart

should do any time, anywhere. Gratitude to parents, elders and others is

something very genial to human heart. What then should be our feelings

of gratitude towards the very source of our life? By any reckoning, they

should be far more than what anyone would feel towards the blood and

matrimonial relations! How to express these can alone be a subject of

discussion and evaluation.

We can sustain our life without food for days and weeks, but not without

water. That is why human settlements have always sought and thriven

on the banks of perennial rivers. Among all such graceful sources, Gag

has her unique notes of sublimity, divinity, and mission.

We have enquiredabout and discovered

the ultimatePresence, from which

the whole creationhas emanated.

Our allegiance to the ancestors

The instance of king Bhageeratha wanting to liberate the Sagaras, his

ancestors, by bringing Gag to the place where lay their remains, was

already a legend in the land. That Vasihadeva wanted to connect it tohis narration in the palace of Ayodhya has spcial significance.

How did Bhageeratha come to think of attempting

such a great mission? Of all the virtues that enrich

human mind, gratefulness to the parents and

ancestors is paramount. Any society becomes

esteemed only when it fosters sufficient regard for thesenior citizens as well as the predecessors. Each generation is born of

the previous one. In everything we do, we start from where our

predecessors had reached or stopped. Any civilization, at any time, is

the combined outcome of an indefinite past. Thus the allegiance to earlier

generations cannot be set aside by anyone.

Bhageeratha illustrates this strikingly in that he, with the merit of intense

austerities, accomplished the stupendous task of bringing down the holy

Gag, despite having attained his own spiritual fulfillment. The bond

that even a fulfilled one cherishes to the ancestors, is a great lesson for

one and all.

Pit-yaja is one of the 5 great yajas, called paca-mah-yajas,

ordained by our scriptures. Bhageerathas effort to get Gag down to

the earth and with the touch of her waters to give redemption to Sagaraschildren (his own ancestors), has thus a great deal of import. Gag

derived the name Bhgeerathi from Bhageeratha.

Enlightening lessons from our puric lore

The spiritual, philosophical and mythological compositions that came

into vogue in this land were obviously composed in different eras by

various sages. In all of them shines a strong bond of affinity, mutuality

and collectivity, which leads the readers and listeners from one Text to

another, evoking curiosity, admiration and wonder. Each narration has

its link with others, complementing and reinforcing one another

amazingly, often posing a challenge to the very intelligence andimagination of the narrator and reader alike.

Every narrator is loyal to the common purpose of enlightening, inspiring

and elevating the minds and intelligence of people. This is also a vital

distinction of our cultural deliberations. It has echoed well in Vasiha,

including the austere story of king Bhageeratha in his narration.

In any society, tradition is a great source of strength. It has the power toinstill hope, confidence, drive and perseverance in people. The process,

far from being mystic, is very pragmatic. Mind and intelligence are not

matter, not physical. To access and involve them, if mythological processes

are effective, they should be welcomed. Such methods are no doubt

practical and compulsive.

Vasiha felt that his listener, Sri Rama, also would need Bhageerathas

austere resolve and dedication to meet the challenges and persuasions

of the royal life awaiting him! Thus, after describing the greatness of

Bhageerathas rule and the overwhelming fondness his subjects showed

him, Vasiha also details how the King was given to the most startling

kind of asceticism. He irresistibly brings many a sublime note, ennobling

and elevating human mind. Seeing clearly how the fate and fortune of

the people of Ayodhya depended on the young prince, Vasiha wanted

his Rama to be a distinguished model in shaping the characteral and

behavioural elegance of the whole country.

Ever since Sage Vlmki wrote the life, exploits and excellences of Rama

at the behest of Brahm, Daarathas first son has remained a lasting

model in the country to mould our people. Vlmki Ramayana is the first

authentic account of Ramas kingly life, characteral elegance, behavioural

propriety and interactional excellence.

But is it right to think that Rama was, and is, the only paragon or model

of righteousness to follow? Right from the prehistoric Vedic age, our

people have been assiduously given to nurture and build inner qualities

and excellence, in preference to external sensory powers and adventure.Conquering the inner realms

Rama himself had made a note on this to Vasihadeva, while detailing

the cause of his post-pilgrimage disgust and dejection:

Yoga-vsiha 1.27.9

I think, those who cross the ocean-like battlefield consisting of

elephants and horses are not the real heroes. The wise and heroic

are verily those, who are able to cross over their own roaring

mind-waves raging in the ocean of body and senses.

By citing the instance of Bhageeratha, an earlier king, and his weddedness

to spiritual wisdom and austere life, Vasihadeva is not only inspiring

and guiding the Ayodhya prince, but also his readers and listeners. He

records the undeniable fact that in this holy land lived, right from

prehistoric times, rulers who excelled in moral, ethical and spiritual

dedication and excellence.

Regal power and splendour did not the least

deter or slacken inner aspiration and spiritual

adventure of our rulers. While Bhageeratha

excelled as a righteous ruler, winning the hearts

and minds of his subjects, he also revelled in

abandoning the throne and people, to seek the

solitude of forests and plunge in severe austerities in order to unravel theimperishable brilliance within.

Regal power andsplendour did not theleast deter or slackeninner aspiration and

spiritual adventure ofour rulers.

With ease did he gift the kingdom once to his unfriendly neighbouring

king, and at another time to the ministers! Kings had full option in

deciding who would be the right incumbent for the throne. After the

amazing austere life of a mendicant, Bhageeratha still had a meltingheart to assume the throne when his subjects insisted, finding the

kingdom languishing due to misrule.

This is the model, Vasihadeva held before Rama to shape and enrich

the princes life. The immortal glory spiritual wisdom fetches, the culture it

has given shape to, has always held its paramount place in the minds and

hearts of the ruled and ruler alike in this great land. Rama marks but one

distinct link of this ageless cultural chain. Bhageeratha is yet another.Vasiha is emphatic in showing how the ageless Vedic life and its

splendour remained unsullied over the countless millennia.

To be imbued with the spiritual qualities

Sage Vasiha said to Rama:

Adopting Bhageerathas lofty vision, cultivating spiritual

enlightenment along with dispassion, remaining Self-seated and

even-minded, perform well whatever needs to be done, with a

quiescent mind and disposition.

After recounting Bhageerathas royal and ascetic life, Vasiha asks Sri

Rama to be imbued with the spiritual qualities: Even-mindedness, truthful

introspection and contemplation. The mind has to be rid of greed,

possessiveness and competition. At the same time, whatever task comes

up from time to time has to be done lovingly and well, without the least

sense of excitement or apprehension. This is how Bhageeratha ruled his

kingdom and became immortal in our cultural history.

Words that do not discuss the Lord, and deal with only worldly

matters, are false and useless. But, the words that reveal the glories

and excellences of the Lord, are true; they alone are auspicious

and holy.

It is words that discuss the excellences of the Lord that remain evernew and delight the mind. They alone can keep the mind of man

always in a festive mood and dry up the ocean of misery.

Points for Introspection

Every human being, young or old, rich or poor, wants peace and

happiness in life. Nobody wants to undergo misery; nobody wants to be

fearful. But, life is such that even though there are moments of happinessand peace, those are transitory. Even the periods of much craved for

peace and happiness are filled with anxiety and fear of losing them. In

short, life in this world is full of tension, anxiety and fear.

The mind has various desires. There is the desire to gain what one likes

and desire to avoid what one dislikes. Because of such likes and dislikes,the mind remains constantly agitated, worried and dissatisfied.

The question is: Is there no way to transcend this misery and suffering?

Is there no way to experience peace and bliss to experience an unbroken

festivity in the mind?

Our scriptures again and again assure us:

Surely there is a way. To go beyond the

miseries of life one must realize the supreme

Lord in ones own heart. One must start

growing love for the Lord. Our love now is for

the worldly objects. When one grows love for

the supreme Lord, all worldly attractions that generate desire, greed,

disappointment, anger etc. become insignificant. The mind gradually

understands that joy and satisfaction of possessing the objects of desire,

is short-lived. Worldly thoughts and interactions bring misery alone at

the end.

Now, how to turn the mind, which is fascinated by the world, towards God?

How to love God more than anything in this world?

To grow love for the supreme Lord, to consider Him to be Supreme in

ones life, one must hear about Him, read about Him, contemplate on

Him, sing his glories and excellences in such a manner that the mind

gets filled with Him and Him alone.

Hearing and singing the sacred recitals of God has immense purifying

power. When a devotee hears and sings about the Lord, the Lord Himself

enters his heart and purifies him of all desires and doubts. In the purified

heart, the supreme Lord reveals Himself. The devotee, attaining refuge at

the holy auspicious feet of the Lord, transcends all sorrow, delusion and

fear.

However, rare are those who hear and sing about the Lord. Mostly people

are engaged in useless talks, discussing only about ones ownpossessions or criticizing others. They talk vainly about what more one

can acquire or possess. These talks only excite and agitate the mind

generating more desire, greed, and dissatisfaction. Even if discussions

about literature, music, art and science are elevating to the mind, such

discussions never take the mind beyond suffering and fear, bringing

eternal peace and happiness.

In this loka, the Lord is referred to as Adhokshajah, meaning the One

who is imperceptible to the senses, who is beyond sense perception. All

that is perceived by the senses is transitory. The Lord, who transcends

sense perception, alone is eternal.

The loka says that the words which do not speak about the

Adhokshajah are useless. Because, they do not tell us about the unreal

nature of the world, and the real Presence in our heart. They do not

discuss about how always our sense perceptions are taking us away

from our real eternal nature and making us undergo misery and fear. On

the other hand, when we hear about the supreme transcendental Lord,

we are able to discriminate between real and unreal. As a result, we are

able to hold on to the real and reject the unreal, to which our senses are

constantly dragging us.

Which words, speeches and compositions are real and true then? This

loka says that only the words that speak about the transcendental

Presence are true and auspicious. Those words are real words because

they lead us to the ultimate Truth the abode of eternal bliss, peace and

fearlessness.

It also says that the words describing the Lord are beautiful. Not only

beautiful, they are very tasty. A fruit may be beautiful to look at, but may

not be tasty. But words about the Lord are not only

beautiful but also sweet. Any eatable has its

particular taste. But, the words describing the Lord have

newer and newer taste pleasing the partaker everytime. That is, when we hear and sing with love for the Adhokshajah,

newer and newer horizons, deeper and deeper insights, are revealed day

after day.

And, what is the result of such growth and enrichment of devotion? The

mind of the devotee becomes full of delight. A kind of unending festivity

fills the mind. Generally, any festivity is transitory, depending on

transitory external situation. We look forward delightfully for the festivalto arrive. We feel joyous while the festival is on. But when the festival

passes off, we get back to our same old monotonous life swinging between

joy and sorrow, full of complaints and dissatisfaction.

But, the words about the eternal Presence fill our mind with eternal

festivity. Because, this festivity does not depend on the transient worldly

situations. Also, when we sing the glories of the Lord, with the mindenjoying the transcendental festivity, the ocean of misery gets completely

dried up. The devotee, who keeps the Lord in his heart, transcends all

grief.

The words of these lokas are very penetrating. Repeated chanting

immediately fills the mind with a transcendental bliss and festivity, not

known before.

Days in USA - II

24 September 2012 (Monday evening), Virginia

On 21 September, in the Marriott hotel in New York City, all of us had

good sleep, except Poojya Swamiji who did not get even a wink of sleep.

Namrata and Mala got ready by 5:00 am, and Pankaj took them to theother hotel room (which had a kitchen) to prepare Poojya Swamijis food.

Since Marriott hotel did not have any room or suite with kitchen (unlike

in New Jersey last year), Pankaj had booked this hotel room, which had

an attached kitchen. Mala later said that even at 5:00 am they found the

streets extremely busy.

They came back well in time after cooking the breakfast and also lunch

which was to be carried with us to be served to Poojya Swamiji in thetrain. While they were serving breakfast to Poojya Swamiji, my heart

was getting full thinking how in spite of all odds, they have been able to

serve Poojya Swamiji the breakfast that he is comfortable with. I wondered

how they managed it, that too so quickly! We did not bring too much of

luggage. Did they have the required vessels, I wondered! I was thinking

of Poojya Swamijis age; if he has to travel, his food has to be looked

after well. I was happy thinking that now in almost all the places, thereare a few who devotionally and dedicatedly look after Poojya Swamijis

food.

The GIBM (Global Indian Business Meet) talk was at 9:00 am in the

same hotel. Sri Anandakrishnan came to meet Poojya Swamiji. He said,

Participation seems to be very poor. The talk (key note address) could

start only by 9.45 am, as the organizers wanted to wait and see whethersome more participants would turn up.

Poojya Swamijis talk was wonderful. More people should have listened

to it. Most amazing is how Poojya Swamiji remains spirited even if the

attendance is very poor. There were about 40 in the audience. They had

expected around 700. Just imagine! I asked Poojya Swamiji whether itwas worth coming for this programme taking so much of trouble,

considering that he was still under jet lag. Poojya Swamiji said:

Something good will come out of it.

This is what is meant by reliance on the Supreme! This is what is

acceptance of all situations! May we imbibe these qualities from our

Master!

We had to take the 12:00 noon train for our return journey. Heath and

Dr. Kumar drove us to the station. Dr. Kumar had bought sandwiches

for us to be taken in the train. He also bought murukku (a South Indiansavoury) for us from some Indian shop, as he strongly felt that we must

have been missing Indian food!

While we were following the porter with trolley, suddenly I found Poojya

Swamiji standing in front of an American lady who stood with folded

hands, eyes fixed on Swamiji. She was repeating the word namaste. AsI reached her, she turned towards me and said namaste again. I askedher how she knew this word! She said she had a Gujarati nephew, from

whom she had learnt the word. She was looking at us very devotionally,

her eyes filled with blessedness.

At that moment, I felt that devotion has no boundary; it cannot be limitedby any country, race, or religion. Her face was tender and soft with

devotion and she looked similar to any of the Indian women in our

country wearing sareeand having a bindion the forehead. In a very softvoice she murmured: You are holy people. You are wearing orange. I

feel so blessed today that I have met you. Then she started narrating to

me how she had various experiences during her prayers.

We had to take leave, as it was time to board the train. Although the

porter here could not help us with a wheel chair, he guided us to the

front of the train to a compartment where we were the first to board.

We reached Washington DC Union station at 2.45 pm. After getting down

from the train, Pankaj requested the ticket checkers for a buggy-car. What

a surprise! The same man came with his buggy. When we understoodthat it was he who was coming, we were so delighted that we started

waving at him from a distance. He too was equally delighted and was

waving back with a big smile on his face.

His name, he said, was Kenny an African-American. How delightfully

helpful he was! Not only he took us in his buggy up to our car, but also

did not allow us to stand in queue for a taxi. He said he would get us acab once we spot our car. And that is what he did! I felt I would never

forget this friendly man and his behaviour.

Today we had no programme. So, the whole day I could write. Hope all

of you are doing well.

25 September 2012 (Tuesday), Virginia

The day we arrived here (19 September) from India, we heard that the

dryer of the washing machine in Pankajs house was not working. With

five of us arriving together and three already there, the laundry situation

became quite hopeless. Because, here people generally do not hang

clothes outside on clothes-line for drying. Poojya Swamiji suggested that

we seek the neighbours permission. When Pankaj approached theneighbour (Japanese) regarding this matter, they not only consented to

our putting up clothes-lines, but also offered to dry the clothes in their

own dryer. They said their maid assistant (from Philippines) would help

us. They felt it was an opportunity to do service to holy people. So, the

maid has been helping. When she saw us hanging clothes on the clothes-

line, she called Anu and told her that we need not take the trouble, but

should give the clothes to her for drying in their dryer.

Right after arrival, everybody became very busy with the Experiential

Vedanta Programme and the New York trip. Only yesterday morning (24

September) there was time. The mechanic also came to repair the dryer.

The whole of forenoon today, Namrata and Swati became laundry ladies washing, drying, folding, and ironing.

In the evening today, we went to the Durga Temple where the Vinu-

sahasranma Yaja will be conducted. The Temple people are very

helpful. In 1999, Poojya Swamiji had spoken from this temple hall. The

temple is very clean, and does not have the usual temple look. We found

some very interesting notices there for the information of the devotees. It

was quite clear that the notices were put up because of some commonlyfaced problems. They are quite similar to what we face regularly in our

Ashram and the Centres. Quite amusing to see that in any public place,

behaviour of people is the same and hence rules and observances also

necessarily become the same.

Although the NYC trip was quite hectic, I liked the whole event. In all

my three earlier visits to the US, we have mostly interacted with Indians,not having much opportunity to be in the midst of locals. This time,

having to spend time in the railway station, I could leisurely watch the

people of this land how they move, how they talk, etc. I could watch

families sitting together waiting for the train. Some seemed to be friends

or colleagues travelling together, some seemed to be students, and so on.

The little but friendly interaction with the porter, people passing by and

saying hello, the friendly gesture of the man who very willingly vacateda good seat for us in the train all these gave me a feeling that there is

a basic common goodness in all human beings, whichever country they

may belong to. I always have a wish to know about people from different

places what are their customs and habits, their thought processes,

their family structure and their ways of life.

It is quite late in the night. Tomorrow, 26th September, we leave for

California Poojya Swamiji, myself, Namrata and Mala. Flight is at 6.10

pm. A six hour flight. It seems, Yogesh and his parents had already

arrived at Santhis house (Irvine, California) on Saturday.

Nutan Swamiji will be here. His lectures on Bhagavadgeeta will start

from 27th in Shouse Village Community Hall, and will continue up to

Sunday. Swati also is staying back to assist the other volunteers.

28 September 2012 (Friday), California

The whole of 26th morning we were busy packing for our trip to

California. Apart from personal belongings, we had to pack books and

CDs, some cooking vessels as well as gerua (ochre) clothes for coveringchairs, etc. We were to start from the residence at 3.30 pm. Had to carry

our dinner also with us. Mala, Santhi and Anu were busy in the kitchen

preparing and packing food, and also packing kitchen material. Namrata

and Swati were trying to take stock of books and CDs and then pack

them in suitable suitcases. Being a working day, men-folk were not

available for assistance in packing. But, Chandrashekhar, Rita and their

two sons, Krishna and Shankar, who had arrived the previous day fromNew Jersey for Poojya Swamijis darshan, had come in the morning to

help.

While we were in the midst of packing, Yogesh called from California

and gave the news that the flight was late by an hour. Subsequently we

started getting news every now and then that the flight was further

delayed. We even started doubting whether the flight would take off at

all. Doubt, because the American Airlines pilots were on strike. Anyway,

when we were told that the fight will surely take off at 8.20 pm, we got

ready to start from home at 5.30 pm.

30 September 2012 (Sunday), California

Days became very hectic with one programme after another. Although

my mind was quite eager to proceed with writing, I could not find timeso far. With Poojya Swamijis talk today, all outside programmes in

California are over. Tomorrow at 7:00 pm will be the last Satsang here at

the residence. Tomorrow morning being free, a ride along the seashore

(Pacific Ocean) has been planned. Day after tomorrow we leave for

Virginia.

When we arrived from Virginia on 26th, Natarajan, Murthy, Ravi andNarayanan (Kannur) were there to receive Poojya Swamiji and party at

Los Angeles airport. By the time we reached home and settled down, it

was 2.30 am. If we were in Virginia it would have been 5.30 am then.

Again jet lag!! But somehow, the programmes were so back to back that

there was no time even to fall a prey to Jet lag!

It is quite late, at night. Will try to continue tomorrow.

1 October 2012 (Monday), California

We just returned from the long drive that was planned for this morning.

It is 12.30 pm now. We had started at 9.30 am in two cars. Namrata

stayed back alone in the house, as she had some work to complete. We

kept on driving along the highway running by the side of the Pacific

Ocean. On one side there were hillocks dotted with cute houses. At places,the hills were quite barren too. On the other side was the ocean, vast

and limitless. As far as the eyes could see, near the horizon, the sky bent

down to embrace the sea. When the road ran very close to the sea, we

could see the colour of the water very clearly. It was bright emerald

green fading into dark blue, light blue, and then white as it went away

from the beach. We stopped at two places, got down from the car for a

while.

The sun was very bright and hot, but there was a cool breeze blowing.

We saw many walking, jogging and sun-bathing. How they were

tolerating such heat, I wondered! At one spot, many were water-surfing.

Very interesting! We were mostly driving, as the heat outside the car was

too much. I was quite happy being able to see the ocean for such a long

time. The very expanse makes the mind dispassionate. The eyes want to

look on at that expanse unbrokenly. Slowly the very existence melts down

into insignificance. And then slowly, almost unawares, the whole being

spreads out merging into the Infinite.

5 October 2012 (Friday), Virginia

Till yesterday I remembered that today is Nutan Swamijis birthday. But,

did not remember in the morning. Nutan Swamiji himself announced

that it is his birthday today. On this occasion, it was very nice to see all

of you on Skype. Even though we are far apart, I never feel the distance

as I keep on sharing my thoughts with all of you. Last night, suddenly

I started feeling the distance. That was because I could not write to you

keeping all of you in my front, for quite a few days.

On 27th September, the day next to our arrival in California, the morning

was free for us. Natarajan, Murthy, and Ravi had decided to take us to

Disneyland which is about 20 minutes drive from the residence. We heard

that Disneyland is so huge that it would take more than 2 days to see

everything. We neither had time nor were interested to go around.Anyway, it was decided that we would take a ride to Disneyland just to

have an idea about the place.

Natarajan was driving Poojya Swamiji, myself and Mala. The 2nd car

was driven by Murthy, with Narayanan, Sumam and Ravi as passengers.

On the way, Natarajan was giving a commentary on various landmarks,

road-signs, exits to freeways and parkways. The parking lot in

Disneyland is huge 7 storied it seems. 7000 cars can be parked at a

time, we were told. A little away from the parking lot run the trams that

carry the visitors very near to the entry point. All of us boarded the tram.

We went past well-kept gardens all along the route. At places were statues

of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and also of Donald Duck.

The spot where we got down from the tram was a little away from the

entry gate. Natarajan said that we could at least see the entry point

which itself is beautiful. It was impossible to see more that day, because

it was already very late. Instead of going up to the entry gate and then

turning back, we decided to return by the very next tram.

The whole place was filled with visitors, especially children and theirparents. I enjoyed looking at the children so sweet and cute, all of

them! They looked almost like cute dolls! In some cases, only the mother

was accompanying. But mostly the whole family was together. Small

children were being pushed in prams. There were double-seater prams

too, where even the older child was being pushed. Bigger families with

four children were quite common. The joy in everybodys face was

something which I enjoyed. A small child of about 3 years or so wasseen trolleying her own small little pink-coloured backpack with wheels.

What she was carrying in that, I wondered! It is enlightening to note

how the children of this land are taught to be independent from such a

young age!

A couple of days later, while we were returning from the lecture hall, at

one point Natarajan parked the car on the side of the road. It seemseveryday there are fireworks from Disneyland at that time. We had a

very good view of the fire works. Our Trichur Pooram fireworks are

equally good, if not better, we felt.

By the way, the 2-day discourses of Poojya Swamiji in California were

held in Gayatri Chetana Centre, which is a branch of Gayatri Parivar of

Haridwar. Poojya Swamiji mentioned to them about us being hosted in

Shanti Kunj (Haridwar) during Kumbha Mela in 2009; and also about

the Gayatri Rath having come to our Ashram.

I shall stop now. We will go to the Viu-sahasranma Yaja venue

shortly. It is nearly 5:00 pm here.

Trekking the Spiritual Path11 August 1996

Poojya Swamiji:

My prostrations to you. I also prostrate to M and Nutan Swamiji with

reverence and love. I thank you for your love and concern.

Swamiji, I am going through difficult times. My sister alone understoodme and the Lord protected me. Every time there was a marriage proposal,

I cried out your name for help and was protected. But last month I

reached my limits. Yet, I understand my parents concern. I wept before

my family to leave me alone.

Swamiji, I am not ready for marriage and do not want to discuss this

any more. I have always felt my life has been designed by Krishna andevery experience takes me closer to Him. Please understand my need

and be kind to me do not label me as arrogant and impolite. You are

my only refuge it is difficult to express myself. My Lord knows it all

and is a witness to my sentiments and emotions.

I am aware that my parents have taken a lot of care and you have been

even more concerned about me. But I am tired of this issue now. Is my

Lord testing me? I am extremely sorry for the trouble caused because of

me.

I have not progressed much in spirituality and this worries me more.

Please free me from this tension and burden.

Dear and blessed R:

Hari Om Tat Sat. With love and fondness, I read your letter of 11thAug. Do you not know: my heart delights when it sees someone filled

with devotion or seeking. In devotion there is no stealth. In seeking there

cannot be any delusion. Never has it been found that love to God can be

bartered. Seeking is an urge that cannot be replaced by anything else.

Yearning for moksha has only one fulfillment attaining it.

Devotional love for God, will not accept any substitute.

But where are the hearts unsullied and untainted to afford such piety

and zeal? They are rarer than the Creator! Creator is one and is

everywhere. So plentiful any time! But seekers are always rare.

Why should the matter of marriage cause you so much of botheration?

Your parents will and do think the way they are doing now. They were

married, and as a result they gave birth to you. Is it not natural to them

to think of marrying off their child also, as they had married themselves?

In spite of everything, they will strive their way. I compliment them for

doing so.

Sri Rama was dissuaded by every one in Ayodhya, including Sage

Vasihadev and Daaratha, to sit on the throne by force, disregarding

his fathers words. But he did not. He chose to trek to the woods, and he

lived there for fourteen years.

You must and have to face such persuasions, dissuasions, insistences

and the like. By these, ensure that your devotional inclination gets further

fortified. Search your own heart. Look for even the slightest trace of passion

and urge for possession, companionship and the like. If nothing is there,

then you are declared to be fit only for being Gods. Be that then. Who can

prevent you from trekking the devotional path?

Your own mind and heart are your obstacles. They alone are your friends

and supporters too. At the same time, be kind, loving and considerate to

all. Honour them and their concerns. By such a move alone your heart

will be empowered.I know of a boy who came to the Ashram for a visit years ago. Then he

went back home. There, he lay on the lap of his mother, crying and

weeping, confessing his flair for spiritual life. The mother at last nodded

her consent. Any well-wisher will like your well-being. But, in the

beginning, they will move in their own way.

So do not have any remorse. Do not doubt or fear; do not swing orswerve. Let depth and stability dawn. And decide to move forward. Seek

your parents consent and support. They will surely extend it.

Or, in the process, if an opposite resolution takes place, honour that

also. Your own heart is the architect of your life. May that be sustained.

is one of fondness. Commands and injunctions like duty andresponsibility are prescribed for those who lack natural fondness

with regard to whatever they are required to do. I like God,

Rukmini Rao (Pune)

Hari Om Tat Sat. Rukmini, wife of Dr.

Balabheem Rao, left her body on October

5 in Pune, having been unwell for some

days. She was a gentle, amiable soul,

who took to spiritual pursuit as well as

societal service with equal fondness.

It was in 1960s that Rukmini and her

husband came in contact with me.

Balabheem was given to intense yogsana

practice. Whatever spiritual affinity it had

brought to his mind took a new spiritual

dimension, when he, with Rukmini, sought Brahmavidy deeksha from

me in Jamshedpur. Rukmini endeared herself to the Satsang group as well

as children, in whom she instilled spiritual culture in her own natural

manner.

Though a chronic asthma patient, she did not feel deterred in her active

spirituo-social interest and pursuit. With a mind spiritually attuned, the

impact of diseases certainly dwindles.

After retirement of her husband from Tisco, they shifted to Pune, where

the family made contact with our devotees. Thus Brahmavidy seekers

and devotees there became Rukminis cherished company. She was a

focal point for many women to get together for learning and reciting

Bhagavadgeet. Many a drop makes an ocean. It is such trickles from

many that grow into a great culture, as it has been from times

immemorial.

Her friendly, caring, helpful nature endeared her to many, young and

old. Praveen Rao, her son, writes that these qualities are something the

children would cherish to intensify in themselves. What more can be

expected from filial fondness and dedication! Fortunate is the motherand even more fortunate are the children.

Rukmini will continue to live in my heart. May the whole family reflect

as often as they can about her spiritual fondness and affinity, making

sure that they lovingly pursue her devotional dedication and zeal. This

will enrich them abundantly, and also result in an esteemed heredity.

Essential Concepts in Bhagavadgt (Volume 6), was released by

Poojya Swamiji on Nov 17, during the inauguration of the 38thDelhi Jna Yaja. The first copy was given to Supreme Court

Justice AK Patnaik. This volume, dealing with the concepts

presented in Chapter 18 of Bhagavadgeeta, completes the series

Essential Concepts in Bhagavadgt, authored by Poojya

Swamiji. The integration that started in chapter 2 by establishing

karma-yoga on a firm foundation of jna, is brought to its

pinnacle in 18th chapter, where karma-yoga, jna-yoga, andbhakti-yoga merge beautifully to take the sdhaka to his ultimate

goal being one with the Supreme.

Chennai Jna Yaja 2012 was scheduled between 25 & 31 October

just 12 days after Poojya Swamiji, Nutan Swamiji and M returned

from the hectic 24-day long USA Jnna Yaja. Poojya Swamiji travelled

to Chennai with a severe throat trouble. He reached Chennai on Oct

24, accompanied by Sri CS Sridhar. M was restricted from travelling,

by the doctor, as she was still under treatment for the newly developedlumbar problem. Ms absence made everybody sad, but also more

alert while setting up the new apartment in Perungadi as Ashram-

residence to host Poojya Swamiji, Ashramites and volunteers during

the Jna Yaja.

Keeping Poojya Swamijis health in mind, the announced pda-pooj was

replaced by a simple function of Pupa-samarpaam on October 25.

But to everybodys surprise, Poojya Swamiji delivered his message in

a powerful voice. He emphasized the eternality of mind-based pursuit

and mind-based sdhan, exhorting devotees to rise above rituals and

material-based pooj.

Fortunately, Poojya Swamijis health improved by 26th, and the 3-day

discourse on Self-realization in the Words of Krishna, akara, and

Vasiha commenced with a comfortable note at Sivagami Pethachi

Auditorium, Mylapore. Sri P.S. Sridhar, Additional Secretary to Tamil

Nadu Government (Department of Higher Education) was the Chief

Guest. Over the three sessions, Swamiji beautifully integrated thefundamental messages from Krishnas Bhagavadgeet, akarchryas

Vivekacmai and Vasihas Yoga-vsiha Rmyaa.

On Sunday, October 28, there was also an interactive Satsang in the

forenoon at the same venue (Petachi Auditorium). Poojya Swamijis

replies to more than 15 interesting questions on various aspects of

spirituality, enriched and elevated all. The concluding discourse on Yoga-

vsiha Rmyaa was a pilgrimage through the mind. During this

last day of the lecture, Poojya Swamiji spoke very touchingly as to

how in spite of ill health he felt committed to the seekers of Chennai

and decided to come to the city.

The 2-day Malayalam Talk on Bhagavnde Mumbil Bhaktan (Devotee

in front of the Lord) was on 29th & 30th evening, at Sri Ayyappa

Temple, Anna Nagar. On 31st forenoon, there was an informal Satsangwith Chennai devotees during which Poojya Swamiji reviewed the

format being followed for Chennai weekly Satsang and gave further

suggestions and guidance. Swamiji emphasized that conducting the

Satsang at a fixed public venue every week, instead of on rotation at

devotees homes, would give a public nature to the event, encouraging

many seekers to participate freely.

38th Delhi Annual Jna Yaja: Poojya Swamiji accompanied by Nutan

Swamiji and M reached CIRD-Vasundhara on Nov 14. Brni. Namrata

Swaroop travelled with them. Guru-archan was performed on Nov

16 by Smt. Raji and Sri Gopinathan on behalf of all the devotees.

Poojya Swamiji will return to the Ashram on Dec 04 night.

Nov 05: Poojya Swamiji ceremonially erected the first post of the

Satra-l pandal for reemad Bhgavata Tattva Sameeksh Satram to

commence in Naimisharanyam, Paralikad, from 23rd December.

Swamiji addressed the devotees and volunteers assembled for theoccasion, emphasizing that to have completed a decade in conducting

the yearly holy event is especially significant, bringing to all concerned

a renewed energy, an additional resolve and commitment, to take the

event forward for many more decades.

11th reemad Bhgavata Tattva Sameeksh Satram will be held from

December 23, 2012, to January 1, 2013 in Paralikad Naimishrayam,

in the sacred precincts of Tacchanatthukavu Devi Temple. Organized

jointly by Narayanashrama Tapovanam and Hind Navotthana Pratishtan,

this great jna-mahotsava (wisdom-festivity) intends to ensure the

prosperity and well-being (kshema-magala) of one and all, by instilling

spirituo-social values reemad Bhgavatam presents and discusses.

About 30 exponents are expected to speak (in Malayalam) highlighting

the values presented throughout the Text. On Dec 28 & 30 there willbe talks by Nutan Swamiji and M in English. Bhat Srvajanika Mah

Mtyunjaya Homam will be held on Dec 23, and Viu-sahasra-nma

Srvajanika Mah-yaja on Jan 01, 2013, the concluding day of the

Satram.

Mtji Sulabha Devis 23rd Mahsamdhi day will be commemorated

on Dec 17 at the Ashram.

18th Annual Geeta Tattva Sameeksh in Thrissur will be held from

20th to 27th January 2013 at the Vadakkunathan Temple

Sreemoolasthnam. Poojya Swamiji will speak (in Malayalam) on the

18th chapter of Bhagavadgeet.

It is the values and qualities embraced and pursued diligently by the

human mind that make life auspicious and fulfilling. Failure to

provide the right value-nourishment would bring in depravity and

degradation. This holds true not just for the individual, but also for

the family, society, or even an entire nation. It is by repeated

introspection that a value gets instilled into the inner personality.

When rightly imbibed, a value moulds the life of an individual,

bestowing on him immense inner strength, and enabling him to

excel in his path. And it is these same values that take the sincere

seeker to the ultimate goal of spiritual felicity and fulfillment.

Wholesome Reliance on the Supreme

Generally, ones sdhan is piecemeal it is time-bound and place-

bound. Thereby it becomes limited. To enable the seeker to get over

this constriction, Krishna brings the principle of all-foldness, to

generate a new note of wholesomeness and continuity. He says:

Eh{ n Eh n{:*i|nn{xi i {n** (18.56)

By undertaking all activities with wholesome reliance on the Supreme,

thereby acquiring the grace of the Supreme, one attains the eternal,

imperishable abode.

All that one has to ensure is that his mind completely rests and

relies on the Supreme. Such a reliance has the inherent power andpotential to look after all his needs. It will also safeguard, may be

mysteriously, against any possible slips and errors he may incur

any time.

Dissuading the mind and intelligence from the plural world and

infusing the sublimity of the transcendental Supreme is the best

safeguard to ensure that only good actions are propelled and the

right evaluations arrived at. The mind and intelligence will imbibe

the best of sublimation and enrichment by their wholesome

attunement to the Supreme.
