Truckee River Water Quality Program and Online Data Access

• City of Reno– Mahmood Azad, Program Manager

• City of Sparks– Mike Brisbin, WQ Coordinator, TMWRF

• Ecological Research Associates– Dr. Charles Goldman– Ted Daum

• UC Davis– David Waetjen

Program Objectives

• Use available water quality data to determine the potential for water quality improvements through restoration and stream bank stabilization

• Determine the necessity of additional data collection (e.g. monitoring) to show benefits from restoration

• Determine the role of anthropomorphic and naturally occurring nitrogen, phosphorus and total dissolved solids (TDS) on the water quality and aquatic habitat of the Truckee River

Program Scope

• Water quality data on the Truckee River from the California border downstream to (but not including) Pyramid Lake, and the surrounding watershed which includes Steamboat Creek, Truckee Canal, and smaller creeks and drainages.

• Show map next slide (overview, close in with elevation and sample sites)

Truckee River Basin

Program Elements

• Data Collection and Compilation

• Creation of Data Repository with On-Line Access

• Analysis of Compiled Data

• Recommendations for Future Data Collection and Monitoring

Major Water Chemistry Monitoring and Analysis in Program Area

• Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility (TMWRF)

• Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA)• Desert Research Institute (DRI)• Nevada Division of Environmental Protection

(NDEP)• Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW)• USGS• Washoe County• Truckee Meadows Interlocal Stormwater

Committee

Program Initial Data Collection

• Existing Online Data– TMWRF River and Water Quality Monitoring Data– Downloadable Data,1966 to 2005, from Various

Sources• Library Searches

– MELVYL– UNR– UCD– Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA)– EPA– Inter-library Loans

• Contacts and Referrals

Semantic Online Data Access (SODA)

Features and Functionality– Data selection by monitoring station,

parameter, and date range– Data may be viewed online or downloaded

in .csv format– Data in tab delimited text (.txt) flat-file format

may be uploaded to the database

Initial Data Overview

• In situ River Monitoring Data• Water Chemistry Data• Station Data

– station ID, name, sampling date range, geographical location (latitude, longitude), sampling equipment, and site description

• Metadata – data field information – internal data validation

Sampling Locations – Initial Database Contents

Potential Data Analysis• Basic calculations

– Minimum, mean, median, and maximum values for each day, month, year, or other timeframe, calculated for each sample site

• Loading Calculations– Plant Influent and Effluent Flows– Non-Point Loading– TMDL and WLAs (TDS, N, P)

• Contaminant Status and Trends

• Data Gaps

Future Database Development

• Database Scalability– The Database will be scalable, i.e. as the

Program evolves and more data and information are collected, the database will evolve as well.

• Improved Integration with Data Collection Entities in Project Area

Overcoming Common Data Sharing Barriers

• Proprietary Treatment

• Concerns of Data Misrepresentation or Misuse

• Lack of Quality Assurance or Metadata Associated with Program

• Resource Constraints

Potential Database Maintenance Strategies

• Dedicated Funding

• “Quid Pro Quo” Agreements

• Automated Data Entry

• Usefulness of Database

Semantic Online Data Access (SODA)

• Architecture– Data Portal– SODA / Database Schema

• Website Demo– Current Features– Proposed Functionality– Open Source Tools and Standards

Semantic Web Integration

• Database Schemas & Metadata Ontology

• Semantic Search

• More Information (http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/)

Semantics relate to meaning... The Semantic Web is an encoding framework, designed for metadata to provide the meaning in a context by describing the relationships between entities.
