The importance of good

accurate data rich modelling

and interoperability.

Director BuildingSMART

What is BIM?

What is BIM?

Sketch up is not BIM

PROCESS

Communication

Coordination

Collaboration

BIM is a process

Are you faking it?

BIG BIM / LITTLE BIM

Big BIM is the process

of collaboration, data

sharing and workflow

integrations

Little BIM are the tools,

REVIT, Bentley etc

Interoperability and standardisation

Can we deliver BIM without

interoperability

/standardisation?

Not Big BIM / Level 3!!!

The Government want standardised

information/data!!!

Therefore we cant rely on native

formats, must have standards to

achieve this

Level 2, BIM ready?

– BS1192/ PAS; Digital plan of works; Protocol, Demand Matrix; Uniclass 2; File Based

collaboration - COBie

Input Output

Output • One type of input in to

one resource

• Many outputs

depending on choice

• Modifying data is

simple, quick and

efficient

What is COBie?

What is IFC? Why is it so important

- IFC's - Industry Foundation Classes, is a

data exchange method that specifies

elements that are used in building

construction in an agreed manner that

define a common language for

construction.

– IFCs provide a foundation for the

exchange and sharing of information

directly between software applications of

a shared building project model.

Can we deliver BIG BIM/ Level 3 now?

– Almost! If we all used the same software we could

probably do level 2.5 but we don’t and wont!!!!

– Still difficult to get COBie outputs from proprietary

software.

COBie trial 2

The objectives of the 2013 trial are to:

– Test IFC as the primary schema for data exchange in a

federated modelling environment.

– Test supporting technologies and workflows to produce

COBie outputs.

– Ensure that trial activities incorporate current definitions

of COBie data requirement at various COBie drop

points and work stages.

– Identify what needs to be done to enable IFC to work

effectively (primarily to identify key usage, development

needs of associated technologies, standards and

workflow).

– Identify the problems & determine solutions for Native

format – IFC – COBie & Native – COBie

– Identify the issues of federating models in different

native formats

– Use its voice and commercial strength to accelerate the

required development.

HMG BIM Task Group COBie-UK-2012 tool Importance of standardised accurate complete, data

– Compliance

– All Components assigned to a System

– All Spaces assigned to a Zone

– Continuity

– System, Component Space and Zone can only be checked by

– by inspection

– or by checking against previous versions.

– Completeness

– Project Phase set to “CIC 3 : Design Development”

– Floors and Types must exist for all Spaces and Components respectively

– COBie demand matrix satisfied

Where is the industry now ?

– Little BIM, Mostly design based

proprietary software, limited use

in construction phase, little use

in maintenance

– Most haven't used level 2 tools

protocol/tools ie COBie etc

– Not aware of interoperability

issues

BuildingSMART & open BIM

– BuildingSMART: a community of people

and organisations who are working with

open-BIM & sharing their experiences

– Working with government & industry to

develop standards, tools and training to

ensure that open BIM is used effectively

– We created the Industry Foundation

Classes (IFC) standard and building data

dictionary & are leading the development

and roll out of COBie in the UK

Who is behind BuildingSMART?

– We are a part of the international

BuildingSMART programme, with

representation across Europe, North

America, the Middle East, Far East &

Australasia.

– BRE taken control from Jan 13, because

we have a background in driving positive

change through programmes such as

Activity

– Technical and User working groups (members only)

– Monthly technical working group meetings – Level 2/COBie,

Infrastructure, building in-use, Level 3(ibim)

– Training – COBie & Competent person scheme (25% off for

members)

– Development of level 3, standards/tools (direct input from members)

– Technical guidance papers, information hub

BuildingSMART UK - members

– Ongoing:

• GovernBIM

• RegBIM

• TrainBIM (+COBie)

• KnoholEM

– Due to start:

• Resilient

• DIM Cities (Mini-KnoholEM)

• Energy management of districts (Mini-Resilient)

• C4C (Clouds for Co-ordination)

BRE/BuildingSMART UK projects;

– Governance for projects

– Explores how different disciplines should

interact with one another

– Based off Digital plan of works/Demand

Matrix; defining the documents and the data

transfer

GovernBIM

– Emphasises heavily upon the

integration of data transfer and

management in the Cloud

– Will be created using existing cloud

technologies and tested in a real

business environment

– Deliverable is a system that manages

data stored on a cloud in an effective

manner and allows for a controlled

project environment for the end-user

Clouds-for-Coordination

– Building Regulations AD, Code for

Sustainable Homes and BREEAM to be

automatically checked

– Procedure to be carried out:

– Extracting data requirements and logical

relationship

– Translate the above in to a language

understandable off-shelf- rules engine

– Integrate rule engine to allow for

information retrieval from the BIM

– Validation against original requirements

– Deliverable is a rule engine (software) that

carried out the checks for the regulations

automatically

TSB RegBIM

RenewBIM

Developing a BIM-compatible renewable energy modelling tool

• Technologies considered: Solar PV, Solar Thermal Heat pumps,

Biomass

– Need to increase awareness requirements of BIM/openBIM

– Vendor specific courses

– One-day courses; different messages

– Am I BIM compliant now?

– One message, approved compliance.
