“The Poisonous Mushroom”

Hitler Makes War on the Jews

•Nazis used Jews as scapegoats for all of Germany’s problems since WWI

•Hitler didn’t necessarily use anti-Semitism as a political tool – he really believed what he was saying

•1933 – laws passed depriving Jews of most rights, violence increased

•November 9, 1938 – Kristallnacht – Nazi mobs attacked Jews in their homes, on the streets, and destroyed Jewish-owned buildings. Marked beginning of elimination of Jews from German life.

Review: You already have this in

your notes

Actions Against Jews• Nuremberg Laws

(1935)-Revoked citizenship in German for Jews

• Many Jews fled Germany and headed to France, Britain, and the US-these countries eventually closed their doors due to such large numbers of refugees

• Hitler isolated the Jews into ghettos-terrible living conditions, filled with diseases

• The Final Solution-program of genocide to exterminate the Jewish, Poles, Russians, homosexuals, the insane, the disabled and the incurably ill.

•More than 6 million European Jews died in death camps and Nazi massacres; less than 4 million survived
