Press Release for California Youth Connection Summer Leadership & Policy Conference 2013

TRANSCRIPT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EMPOWERED FOSTER YOUTH SPEARHEAD LEADERSHIP AND POLICY

CONFERENCE AT CHICO STATE UNIVIERSITY

California Youth Connection (CYC) is an advocacy organization of current and former foster

youth between the ages of 14-24. CYC started in 1988 and now consists of 32 chapters

(counties) throughout California. CYC gives foster youth a voice in the development of policies

that affect them.

The Leadership and Policy Conference is an annual conference where CYC youth facilitators

train CYC members in leadership skills, including conflict resolution, community organizing,

and facilitation skills. At the summer conference, hosted by the Glenn Chapter, with support

from the Butte Chapter, members identify the most pressing issues facing foster youth in

California. Members then spend the remainder of the conference brainstorming solutions and

developing policy recommendations to address the problems they have identified.

From July 26 to July 29 2013, current and former foster youth from throughout the state of

California will gather on the campus of California State University Chico to empower each

other, support each other, and discuss issues that affect the foster care system. This year’s

conference will focus on Group Home Reform, High School Support Services, Sibling

Visitation, and Transitional Housing/AB-12 Housing.

By following @CALYOUTHCONN and using #SLPC13 media outlets will be able to follow

the conference discussions, questions, and developments during its closed sessions on Facebook,

Twitter and Instagram. The conference is open to the public and to media on MONDAY JULY

29TH
