VERMILLION,S.D.–TheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra’sDakotaWindQuintetvisitsVermilliononThursday,Nov.9,foraconcertfeaturingcompositionswrittenbystudentsfromRapidCityandPineRidgeandstudentsandadultsfromtheSissetonWahpetonSiouxTribeandtheSissetoncommunity.

Theconcertbeginsat7p.m.followinga6p.m.receptionattheCoyoteTwinTheatreREDSteakhouseAuditorium,10E.MainSt.Ticketsare$5atthedoorortheycanbepurchasedinadvanceatvermilliontheaters.com.

SomeofthecompositionstobeperformedwereborneoutoftheLakota/DakotaMusicProject,along-termcollaborativeprograminpartnershipbetweenSDSOandtheNativeAmericancommunitythatseekstobuildtangiblebridgesbyfindingpointsofcommoninterestandexperienceinmusic.

TheDakotaWindQuintetwillpresentUnforgivableRiverby18-year-oldGarrettLawrence,Decoctionby16-year-oldJoDean(Zip)FastWolf,DistantHeartby15-year-oldBaylieHerManyHorsesandNoShadowby15-year-oldMayaEagle.Tocreatetheircompositions,theparticipantsteamedupwithChickasawComposer-in-ResidenceJerodImpichcaachaaha'TateandprofessionalmusiciansfromtheSDSO’sDakotaWindQuintetandDakotaStringQuartet.TheMusicCompositionAcademiesengagestudentsincreativeexpressionthroughmusicwithdailycompositionlessonsandactivitiesemphasizingculturalunderstandingandfindinghumancommonalities.

TheacademiesaremadepossiblebytheBushPrizeandNewMusicUSA’s“MusicAlive”program,whichselectedSDSOasoneoffivecomposerandorchestrapairstoparticipateinthenationalthree-yearcomposer-residencyprogram.MusicAliveprioritizescollaborativeworkandimmersiveexperiencesforcomposers,orchestramusicians,artisticleadershipandcommunitymembers.TheSouthDakotaArtsCouncilandtheSouthDakotaCommunityFoundationalsofundtheproject.

Tate’sresidencyismadepossiblethroughMusicAlive,aresidencyprogramoftheLeagueofAmericanOrchestrasandNewMusicUSA.Thisnationalprogramisdesignedtoprovideorchestraswithresourcesandtoolstosupporttheirworkwithcomposersandnewmusic,capitalizingonthepowerofcomposersandtheircreativitytobuildnewpathsfororchestrastoheightentheirrelevancyanddeepentheirrelationshipswiththeircommunities.MajorfundingforMusicAlivecomesfromTheAndrewW.MellonFoundation,withadditionalsupportfromTheAaronCoplandFundofMusic,TheAmphionFoundation,TheASCAPFoundationBartHowardFund,theFrancisGoeletCharitableLeadTrusts,andtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.

TheBushPrizeforCommunityInnovation,whichisgivenbytheSt.Paul-MinnesotabasedBushFoundation,recognizesorganizationsfortheirinnovativeworkincommunityengagement.Inaddition,theSDSOwasselectedasoneoffiveorchestrasinthecountrytoparticipateinathree-yearcomposerresidencythroughNewMusicUSA,whichbringsTatetoSDSOthrough2019.SDSOistheregion’spremiereperformingartsorganizationwiththeWashingtonPavilionasitshome.Artistically,SDSOisledbyMaestroDeltaDavidGier,whohasguidedtheorchestratonewmusicalheights.ThecoreofSDSOiscomprisedofninefull-timeprofessionalmusiciansthatmakeuptheDakotaStringQuartetandtheDakotaWindQuintet.Musically,SDSOperformswellaboveits$2.3millionbudget.
