FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DAKOTA WIND QUINTET CONCERT Nov. 2, 2017 THURSDAY, NOV. 9, 2017, COYOTE TWIN THEATRE, VERMILLION SDSO’s Dakota Wind Quintet performing Lakota/Dakota Music Project compositions in Vermillion VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s Dakota Wind Quintet visits Vermillion on Thursday, Nov. 9, for a concert featuring compositions written by students from Rapid City and Pine Ridge and students and adults from the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton community. The concert begins at 7 p.m. following a 6 p.m. reception at the Coyote Twin Theatre RED Steakhouse Auditorium, 10 E. Main St. Tickets are $5 at the door or they can be purchased in advance at vermilliontheaters.com. Some of the compositions to be performed were borne out of the Lakota/Dakota Music Project, a long-term collaborative program in partnership between SDSO and the Native American community that seeks to build tangible bridges by finding points of common interest and experience in music. The Dakota Wind Quintet will present Unforgivable River by 18-year-old Garrett Lawrence, Decoction by 16-year-old JoDean (Zip) Fast Wolf, Distant Heart by 15-year-old Baylie Her Many Horses and No Shadow by 15-year-old Maya Eagle. To create their compositions, the participants teamed up with Chickasaw Composer-in-Residence Jerod Impichcaachaaha' Tate and professional musicians from the SDSO’s Dakota Wind Quintet and Dakota String Quartet. The Music Composition Academies engage students in creative expression through music with daily composition lessons and activities emphasizing cultural understanding and finding human commonalities. The academies are made possible by the Bush Prize and New Music USA’s “Music Alive” program, which selected SDSO as one of five composer and orchestra pairs to participate in the national three-year composer-residency program. Music Alive prioritizes collaborative work and immersive experiences for composers, orchestra musicians, artistic leadership and community members. The South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Community Foundation also fund the project. Tate’s residency is made possible through Music Alive, a residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA. This national program is designed to provide orchestras with resources and tools to support their work with composers and new music, capitalizing on the power of composers and their creativity to build new paths for orchestras to heighten their relevancy and deepen their relationships with their communities. Major funding for Music Alive comes from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from The Aaron Copland Fund of Music, The Amphion Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation Bart Howard Fund, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. About the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) is based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a vibrant and growing community serving a 125-mile region that touches five states. Known for innovative programming and statewide outreach, the SDSO has a strong heritage upon which to build an even stronger future. SDSO was the 2016 winner of the Bush Prize for Community Innovation. The Bush Prize for Community Innovation, which is given by the St. Paul-Minnesota based Bush Foundation, recognizes organizations for their innovative work in community engagement. In addition, the SDSO was selected as one of five orchestras in the country to participate in a three-year composer residency through New Music USA, which brings Tate to SDSO through 2019. SDSO is the region’s premiere performing arts organization with the Washington Pavilion as its home. Artistically, SDSO is led by Maestro Delta David Gier, who has guided the orchestra to new musical heights. The core of SDSO is comprised of nine full-time professional musicians that make up the Dakota String Quartet and the Dakota Wind Quintet. Musically, SDSO performs well above its $2.3 million budget. ### For information, please contact: Dirk Lammers, Cetera Services PR and Marketing Manager South Dakota Symphony Orchestra [email protected] (605) 254-3472 PH: (605) 335-7933 301 S.
