Rosebery News Dear Parents and Carers It was a joy to attend the Shakespeare Festival at the Leatherhead Theatre on Friday evening where our talented cast of Year 8 and 9 students gave a funny, moving and professional performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We were so proud of the students, but most importantly they were so proud of themselves because they recognised that they had produced an engaging and polished performance as a result of their hard work and commitment. I am very much looking forward to meeting with the group to celebrate their achievements and I am very grateful to Mrs Dever, who masterminded this exceptional opportunity for the students.
Year 13 students have completed their mock examinations and parents will have received a report on these this week, followed by the Parents’ Evening which took place on Thursday. If you have a student in Years 7 to 10, you will shortly receive a report on your child’s progress over this term. As we explained in the Information Evenings in September, we are now going to report percentage assessment scores to you rather than levels or grades, so that you can have a clearer idea about how secure your child’s knowledge and understanding is of this particular unit and how this compares to the performance of other students in the year group. You can find the curriculum map on the website which will allow you to see exactly what has been studied in each subject area. We have also reported on the Effective Learning Qualities (ELQs) that we have introduced this year, to encourage our students to be more disciplined, inquisitive, reflective, determined and courageous through their work in and out of the classroom.
This week we say farewell to Mrs Hart-McKee, Head of PE, and Mrs Calvin, a member of our Science team, as they go on maternity leave. We wish them both all the very best and we welcome Miss Martin to teach PE and Mr Rowden, who will join the Science team.
Finally, as I write final preparations are being undertaken for the ‘Turn It Purple’ day in memory of Mr Celine, to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, and our Christmas Fair which the PSA have worked so hard to organise. I am very grateful to everyone who has supported these important events.

Parents/carers are asked to pay the £3.50 cost in advance via ParentPay. Payment deadline: Thursday 5/12/19. There will be no alternative main meal choice served at lunch on each date, therefore students who aren’t having Christmas Lunch should buy food from the Grab and Go area of the canteen at break on either day. Full details have been circulated by email today.

Rosebery students took to the stage at The Leatherhead Theatre to perform ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. They worked incredibly hard in rehearsals and came up with lots of their own ideas to bring the play to life, and make it entertaining. I am so proud of the attitude and creativity they showed throughout the process. Well done to the whole cast!

Rosebery Christmas Concert
Information
Monday 2 December 2019 • Year 7 students are to go straight to the Playhouse at 9.00am
• All other year groups will walk down from school 20 minutes before their first rehearsal starts – students will sign out with the Attendance Officer, Room S04, before they leave.
• Students will walk in pairs from school to the Playhouse.
• The afternoon performance starts at 2.00pm and will finish at about 4:30pm.
• The evening performance starts at 7.00pm and students must be at the Playhouse by 6:45pm. It will finish at about 9.30pm.
• Students in Years 7 - 11 wear school uniform apart from those in the Big Band.
• Sixth Formers will wear black trousers/knee length skirt and a white shirt/blouse.

EXAMS NOTICE
Year 11 Mock Examinations
Year 11 Mock Examinations begin on Tuesday 3 December and finish on Monday 16 December. Parents/carers can view exam timetables via INSIGHT. Students are reminded to check the Examinations Notice Board outside the Staffroom on a daily basis for the room and seat number of their exam.
All students are expected to bring the following equipment to their mock exams:
* Black Biro * Pencil Ruler * Protractor * Pair of compasses
* Highlighter * A scientific calculator (Casio FX-83GT series is recommended)
Pencil cases and water bottles must be see-through. Water only, no juice. Bags, coats, mobile phones and smartwatches are not allowed into an exam room and are to be left in lockers.

STUDENT CO-PLANNERS
- Using students to help inform our teaching and make our lessons even better!
On Wednesday 13 November a group of students from Years 7 to 13 worked with Mrs Ford, Miss Lowe and Mrs Cook on becoming co-planners. Excellent teaching and learning is something we are incredibly proud of here at Rosebery, and we are so lucky to have such dedicated teachers who devote such care to their planning. We also see the value of listening to our students and talking with them to really examine what works in our classrooms. The co-planning training involved several aspects so that these students can be used throughout the year to work with teachers to further develop their lessons and the students’ experiences.
The first part of the session was spent considering what makes a great lesson, both from a student and a teacher’s point of view. Our attention then turned to what makes great learners, and Miss Lowe worked with our students to get them to consider the Effective Learner Qualities and how teachers can help students work towards developing these. Next, students reflected on what teachers must consider when planning their lessons and how this may affect the decisions they make in terms of how lessons and activities are structured. Finally, as a group, we looked at students giving feedback to teachers about their lessons and how to do this in a way that was both positive and constructive. Students worked on re-framing negative scenarios and writing coaching style questions that could be used with teachers to tweak their lessons and make them even better for our learners.
The most exciting part of the co-planning project was when our students got to work with teachers to co-plan and review their lessons or activities. On Wednesday 20 November 40 teachers worked with the co-planners. Each teacher brought along a lesson plan or resource which they then discussed with the co-planners and considered ways to make these lessons/activities even better for the students. The remaining teachers will then do the same in January.
Both teachers and students got an awful lot out of working together, with students commenting that it made them appreciate how much time and thought goes in to planning lessons and the key elements that need to be considered. Students were also very perceptive in noticing that excellent lessons need both teachers and students working together, and that collaboration is key. Teachers also very much enjoyed the opportunity and valued hearing from the students the ways that they like to learn best, and how these strategies can be embedded in their lessons.
There will be many times across the year when departments or groups of teachers may call upon the co-planners to work with them and we cannot stress enough how fantastic this group has been! A huge thank you goes to all the teachers and particularly the students involved:

The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan’s adventures with mortals and the Greek Gods is fun and fast paced. In his new series, Apollo has been banned from Olympus by Zeus and stripped of his powers but the most humiliating aspect, he is a teenage boy! If Apollo is ever to regain his Powers and God status he must complete several quests. His first quest is to protect the last Oracle from the BEAST. Each quest is more dangerous and thrilling. There are currently four books in the series with the most recent The Tyrant’s Tomb recently published.

AMAZING APPRENTICESHIPS
A new media training course
for young people ages 8-18
An exciting and fun six-week media training course for
young people, which takes place at the professional
radio studios in Guildford.
Starting in January 2020, it trains young people in all
aspects of modern media in a professional work
environment.
Led by Eagle Radio presenter and tutor, Jack Johnson,
the programme consists of six 90 minute sessions
over the course of a school half term and covers
radio presenting and production, video production,
social media, YouTube, DJ and mixing skills,
advertising and journalism.
You can choose to do the Thursday evening course or
the Saturday afternoon course, and there are three age
groups (8-12, 12-15 and 15-18).
Cost of the 6 week Academy Programme
is £180 per person.
