THIS WEEK’S NEWS

Weekly News Round

Rosebery News Dear Parents and Carers Several different groups of students have been focusing on identifying their next steps this week. On Saturday, a group of students from Years 10 to Year 13 engaged in a conference at Rosebery focused on developing their understanding of a career in medicine. Following this, Year 8 have begun to engage in the decisions they need to make for their GCSE options. For the first time we combined our Options Evening with our annual Careers Fair and students from a range of year groups were able to meet with our exhibitors, many of whom are Rosebery alumni, before the event for a more focused Q&A session. We were also delighted to welcome a number of Imperial College Computing undergraduates who worked with a group of Year 8 students to highlight the opportunities and exciting challenges associated with pursuing a career in this sector. Year 11 students have also met with members of the Sixth Form team to confirm their choices for A Levels for September 2019. Once again, we have all been impressed by their considered and thoughtful approach to this process and look forward to supporting their transition into Year 12 once their GCSE exams are finished.

It was my pleasure to attend a ceremony at the British Medical Association on Thursday where we were recognised for our fundraising on behalf of Pancreatic Cancer UK. The current figure stands at £23,053 with a further £3,098 raised through Gift Aid, a figure raised in just two months. This phenomenal amount is entirely due to the way in which Mr Celine made such a difference to the lives of so many young people over the last twenty years and I know that the generosity of so many people brought such comfort to him and his family in the final weeks of his illness.

This week I write again to invite you to contribute to our latest fundraising effort. As you are aware Emma Risby, who has taught languages for the last seven years

at Rosebery, suffered a significant and life changing stroke in February and she has months of very intense rehabilitation ahead of her, as she is supported to regain her speech and mobility. In the last three weeks, Miss Risby’s courage and resilience has shone through, and she has already made some small but significant steps forward. Miss Risby is Australian and her parents and sister have come to an unfamiliar country, where they have no friends or family, to be with her. Understandably, they want to return to Australia with their daughter as soon as they can, the logistics of which are neither quick or straightforward to organise. There will also be a significant associated cost to ensuring that Miss Risby has everything she needs to make that journey and the initial care for her back in Australia as comfortable as possible. As a school, we would like to support Miss Risby and her family to get her home, and if you feel that you could contribute to the Just Giving page that we have set up for Emma, then it would mean a great deal to her, to her family, and to our school community.

Finally, we have received good news with regard to the 479 bus service which will resume tomorrow, following the same timetable as previously, to be run by Arriva. We are grateful to SCC’s Transport Team whose hard work has resulted in the reinstatement of the bus services providing transport to our students which were impacted by the cessation of trading of Buses Excetera earlier this week.

Have a lovely weekend.

PE NEWS

The Year 7 Netball B team (pictured above), played exceptionally well and won the North Surrey Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) tournament on Monday afternoon. The students won convincingly, beating St Andrew’s, Esher, Ashcombe, and Epsom and Ewell schools.

The team had an outstanding afternoon and we are extremely proud of them all.

Mrs L Hart-McKee, Head of PE

The U16 Netball team Molly B, Lucy H, Izzy B, Jemma S, Emma S, Lucy J, Carys W, Niamh F, Erin C and Bethany H (pictured below) represented Rosebery in the County Finals on Sunday 10 March.

The team got through to the finals after coming in the top three at a tournament last November. Rosebery were the only state school in Surrey to get through to the final 12. This was an excellent achievement, despite the wind, rain, mud and hail - a special thanks to Miss Saul, standing in the middle of the picture, for coming to support the students all the way from Oxford!

We had a fun-filled day celebrating Pi Day. We started with some Pi related dingbats and activities during form time for Years 8-11 which the students really enjoyed, there was lots of fun and laughter! Year 7 Maths lessons were full of Pi related Maths tasks which involved a group competition where students had to solve some Pi puzzles, dingbats, number search, memorise Pi to as many digits as they could and create a Pi related poem or song. The lessons were absolutely buzzing! Along with the fun-filled Maths activities, the Year 7 students competed in a Pi Cake Competition. We had many lovely, tasty cakes brought in to school which made the judging very difficult. After much consideration and deliberation amongst the Maths team we decided on two winners (one cake was a joint effort):

Best taste — Imogen R (7EX) and Sophia H (7EX)

Best presentation — Eleesha W (7EX)

At lunchtime we had a bake sale and raised £45 for Pancreatic Cancer.

Thank you to everyone for participating.

PI DAY - THURSDAY 14 MARCH

Rosebery student Holly W in Year 9 is a keen netball player. Outside of school, Holly plays Goal Keeper for the U14 Ashtead All Stars Netball Team. The team took home gold medals after being undefeated all season in the Nonsuch Netball League A division, winning all their 9 matches.

Well done, a fantastic achievement.

PUZZLE OF THE WEEK— A NEW MATHS COMPETITION

Puzzle of the Week is a free international Maths puzzle competition for schools. Students (in any year group) submit answers to a puzzle which is published every Monday. See below for details.

How to enter:

Students visit the website http://www.puzzleoftheweek.com/ which will have the puzzle of the week displayed. Then once they are ready to submit an answer they scroll down the web page until they see the ‘Click here to submit’ icon. (pictured right)

Students will be asked to fill in their answer, first name, surname and school from a drop down menu and their school email address. Teachers and parents are also able to submit and answer (however their answers do not count towards school leader boards).

This competition is international, so you can see on the website which schools are at the top and how we compare to them.

Rewards

Along with the satisfaction of completing the puzzle, I will nominate a random weekly winner and they will receive 3 Achievement Points and House points for participation. The names will be displayed on the Maths notice board outside the Maths office. On this noticeboard, I will also display the Top 10 leader board results for all the students who have en-tered from Rosebery each week.

I am very excited to see our school’s progress and which one of our students will be my weekly winner.

SCIENCE AND MATHS ACHIEVEMENTS

Well done to the 10 students, listed right, who have completed the most Science questions on Educake in the past week.

Educake has questions from Biology, Chemistry and Physics for all year groups. It is a great way of revising for the recall questions in preparation for tests.

Students can be set homework on Educake and can also go online at any time to set themselves quizzes. These students have completed questions from class and independently.

Well done!

Two local youth Jazz Bands now open to new members!

The Epsom Youth Jazz Ensemble & Epsom Youth Big Band are now recruiting new members and are on the lookout for enthusiastic young musicians to join. Both bands run outside of school hours on a Tuesday afternoon/evening at Stamford Green School in Epsom and are run and directed by respected local musician & teacher, Ben Tompsett. Ben is primarily a Jazz Saxophonist & Pianist, with over 20 years of experience working as a musician, teacher (including Rosebery students) and composer. The Junior Jazz Ensemble has no age or grade restrictions and is open to most instruments. The Big Band is more suitable for those approaching Year 9 and above with a playing level of Grade 4-8. The bands are now entering their 10th year and continue to grow in strength and number, playing a variety of Jazz, Funk and Contemporary styles including vocal numbers and music from TV & Film. Please email Ben for more details. [email protected]
