▪Way Forward

Agenda

• Mining is extraction of Minerals and Rocks from the earth’s crust.

• India produces as many as 89 minerals

• Fuel- 4• Metallic- 10• Non-Metallic- 46• Atomic- 3• Minor Minerals- 26

• India’s share of Mining sector in GDP is only 2.0% while it is 6% in Australia, China 3%.

• The mining sector has to grow @ 8% if the economy grows @ 9 % rate

Why Mining is important

What is an ACCIDENT?

It is unplanned, unwanted and uncontrolled event which causes or may cause harm to man, machine, environment or property

What is SAFETY?

It is the precautions to prevent accident

When can we take precautions?

When we can perceive the event before hand.

Another fact that makes the Leadership more importance is that our system consists of Man and Machinery which are failable

Importance of Leadership in Safety

Our Presence

6

Our Purpose

Demonstration by Leaders:

• Safety, Environment and Compliance performance reviewed by the MD every month for at least 3 hr.

• Line Management Leaders are visible at Mine sites

• All process are based on our five Values; Passion, Integrity, Speed, Commitment & Seamlessness

• Implementable Policy on Occupational Health & Safety, Environment and Compliance

• Provide appropriate resources including supervision to implement the same.

Management representative,Mainly staffs who will implement the recommendations

Worker representative,Worker from each activity, who are performing the job and have Safety attitude, pointing out the UC and UA.

11 nos Safety Officers are trained NEBOSH Safety Management and qualified

36 nos Workman Inspectors are trained by IMME for 12 days

20-30 nos Members are trained IMME at each site for 6 days

They are trained by St. John Ambulance, at each mine

11

Empowerment

4. Use of Enablon Software for capturing UA & UC, reporting incident/accident without any hassle.

1. Different coloured Helmet with ‘’Safety Commando’ written on both side of it

2. Reflecting jacket/T-shirt with ‘’Safety Commando’ written on back of it

3. These will be handed over to them by the Cluster Head on a special ceremony.

12

Safety Management Plan

All of our Mines (both Coal & Metal) have Safety Management Plan and submitted to DGMS

13

• Safety Management System (SMS) and structure based on

HMF

Safety Management Plan

Digital SMP – Reports & Dashboards

The Reports & Dashboards enables snapshot of status of SMP to Key Stakeholders like Mine Management & DGMS officials. It showcases at a glance status of various activities in the following categories.

1. Backlog2. In progress3. In Review4. Completed

These can be see against a timeline indicating whether there is movement on these activities.

The dashboards can also be configured to showcase a Summary of Status of SMP at various mines within a region or a mining company.

Safety Management Plan

15

We are transforming barren land into farming land after Mining. This is at an altitude of more than 1100 mts from sea level.

Safety Award

Objective:

To involve every employee in the Safety culture.

To make the Behavioral process in Safety system smoother.

To inculcate the right and fair Safety reporting system.

To encourage the new idea in Safety and its implementation in our mines.

Way Forward

Investment in People

Equipment

• Taking productive mining to the next level…where health & safety and Environment remain the highest priority

Safety, Health &

Environment

Success

21

Investment in People

• Capacity building / Skill enhancement of Safety professionals by Virtual Reality

(VR) training.

• Capability building of line function officials

✓ Corporate Audit mostly done by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) drawn from

line function

• E-Learning facility for all Management systems, including Safety.

• Focus on Occupational Health

✓ Exposure Assessment (Qualitative completed)

✓ Introduction of Standardized practices all across Hindalco

22

Investment in Equipment

More mechanization to reduce or eliminate manual work

More mechanization to increase recovery to reduce the specific Mining Area

More mechanization to reduce or eliminate hazardous work like drilling and blasting

Benefits

▪ 24 X 7 Monitoring

▪ Strata (Roof & Pillar)

▪ Mine Environment (CH4, Nox,

etc.)

▪ Mine Ventilation (Airflow, O2

etc)

▪ Dewatering Monitoring

▪ Belt Conveyor Monitoring

▪ Real-time tracking of Personnel &

Equipment

▪ Wireless Voice Communication.

▪ Proximity Detection

Challenges▪ Deploy strategically placed Wi-Fi

Access Points in underground roadways as readers for RFID Tags, that are carried by people or attached to vehicles & other equipment

▪ Equip Miners with RFID Tags enabling real-time tracking

▪ The wireless network installed for tracking can also be used for two-way voice communications by simply using VoIP Handsets.

Safety is important in all workplaces, but takes on even greater priority in hazardous environments like underground mines. Reducing safety incidents also positively impacts productivity.

• Improved Safety • Effective Communication • Real-time tracking –Tracks the

movement of personnel and equipment

• Enhanced Productivity • Collision Avoidance • Real-time production visibility• Short Interval Control
