Needs of the Organism are met at the Cell level

Identify the steps of how cells of the body use organs and tissues to get

food and air and get rid of wastes?

Billions of cells

• Your body• -needs air• -needs nutrients (food & water)• -needs to get rid of wastes

• Why does your stomach growl?

• Why do you get a drink of water?

• Why do you come up for air when you are swimming?

•As we discuss the pathways that air and

food must travel, count how many systems are

involved.

What system do you think of when you think of getting air?

What is the pathway for a cell to get oxygen (air)?

Respiratory System

• nose-• trachea-• lungs-• alveoli-• tissue-• capillaries-• arteries-• capillaries-• cell

How many systems were used?

What system do you think of when you think of getting food and water?

What is the pathway for a cell to get food and water?

Digestive System

• mouth-• esophagus-• stomach-• small intestine-• tissues-• capillaries-• artery-• capillaries-• cell

How many systems are used?

What happens to the food that doesn’t get absorbed?

Problems in the Large Intestine.

• Constipation• Colon cancer

• Eat Healthy• Be happy

What system do you think of when you think of waste? What is the pathway for a cell to get rid of waste?

Excretory System

•Where does waste start…?

…in every cell

cell-tissue-

capillary-vein-

kidney-ureter-bladder

How many systems are used to get rid of waste?

Why do doctors want a urine sample from you?

• It is possible to discover diseases of many different organs of the body with a urine test.

• The sample can be taken alone if, for instance, the purpose is to find out if you suffer from cystitis. In other cases it will be taken along with other tests (such as stool or blood tests) as part of the investigation process.

• A urine test is a cheap, simple test that can provide a lot of important information, for example:

-blood in the urine may be a sign of different diseases in the kidneys, the urinary system or the bladder.

-sugar in the urine may be a sign of diabetes.-protein in the urine may be a sign of a kidney disease and can be used to detect the early signs of kidney

damage from long-standing diabetes.

• Take turns and see if you can tell your partner the pathways for a cell to get:

• Oxygen• Food/Water

• Get rid of Waste
