Showing Possession
“Possessive Determiners”
These determiners refer to what a subject pronoun possesses, which in English would be my/ you/ his/ her/our/your/their.
Since French gives a gender of either masculine or feminine to all nouns, these determiners come in various forms to accommodate gender as well as number.
Forms: Masculine
nounFeminine noun Plural nouns-
M and FJe- my mon ma mesTu- your ton ta tesIl/Elle- his/her
son sa ses
Nous- our
notre notre nos
Vous- your
votre votre vos
Ils/Elles- their
leur leur leurs
A possessive determiner that refers to a singular noun nevernever ends in –s
• J’ai vu mon frère
• Ils ne trouvent pas leur voiture
A possessive determiner that refers to a plural noun always ends in –s
• Je ne trouve pas mes photoss
• Il joue avec ses enfantss
• Nous sortons avec nos copiness
Feminine nouns or adjectives that begin with the vowel or ‘silent h’ will use the masculine possessive determiner.
• Il embrasse son amie
• Elle a vu son ancienne voisine
TRÈS IMPORTANT:
French does not differentiate between “his mother” and “her mother”; the choice of the possessive determiner depends solely on the following noun, the ‘possession’.
The mother (which is la mère) is what belongs to someone in this example, so the gender of whose mother it is does not matter.
Exemple:• If we look at Meg or Stewie (or Chris), the
word for ‘her’ dad and ‘his’ dad would be the same.
• It is not the person who matters, but the object that belongs to the person
