Audre Lorde

February 18, 1934—November 17, 1992

A Caribbean-American writer, radical feminist, woman-

ist, lesbian, poet, and civil rights activist. One of her

most notable efforts was her activist work with Afro-

German women in the '80s. She spoke on issues sur-

rounding civil rights, feminism, and oppression. Her

work gained both wide acclaim and wide criticism, due

to the elements of social liberalism and sexuality pre-

sented in her work and her emphasis on revolution and

change. Her father from Barbados and her mother was

Grenadian from the island of Carriacou.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

January 16, 1980—

A Caribbean-American actor, singer, rapper, songwriter, direc-

tor, producer, and playwright. He is of Puerto Rican decent,

and during his childhood and teen years would frequently visit

his grandparents in Puerto Rico. He is best known for writing

the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”, which details the life and

death of our first Treasury Secretary, himself a Caribbean im-

migrant. Lin-Manuel also wrote the hit musical “In the

Heights”, which focused on Dominican immigrants living in

Washington Heights, New York City. He’s won an Emmy, a Pu-

litzer Prize, three Tony awards, and a multitude of others.

When accepting a Tony Award in 2016, he so famously de-

clared:
