Introduction to MOSS 2007

Presented by Sanjeev T, PMP

Session Objectives

• Foreseeing various opportunities for Portal development

• Building a Practice at SAKSOFT for Portal development

• Down the line, we are looking at both Open-Source & Licensed products available in the Market

• Understand the out-of-the-box features available in MOSS 2007

• Ability to develop Enterprise level portal development for our clients

What is Portal?

• Definition - “A web-based layer which aggregates, integrates, personalizes and presents information, transactions and applications transparently for the user according to their role and preferences.”

Types of Portal• Vertical Portals - focus only on one specific industry, domain or

vertical. Examples: Pets.com, pfizer.com

• Horizontal Portals - general audience and try to present something for everybody. Examples: yahoo.com, msn.com

• Enterprise Portals - focus on providing employees with this information on a regularly updated manner along with document management system, availability of applications on demand, online training courses and web casts etc along with communication in the form of emails, messaging, web meetings etc.

• Corporate Portals - A company’s public Website itself is not automatically a corporate portal. It can become one if the Website provides personalization and navigation functionality, as many are beginning to do.

WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007?

• WSS 3.0 is a technology and MOSS 2007 (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007) is a product that is built on top of WSS 3.0

• WSS 3.0 is bundled as a free add-on with Windows Server 2003/2008, whereas MOSS 2007 is licensed.

MOSS 2007 Architecture

Other Products in the Market…

• IBM Websphere• BEA’s WebLogic• Oracle Portal Tool• Liferay – Best Open Source Portal in the

market• Drupel, Joomla (PHP based open-source)• Other open-source tools in .NET and Java

Medium FARM

Features of MOSS 2007

High level Architecture

Product Evaluation• Client Shop - .NET / Java / ORACLE / Open Source?

• License Cost (Open Source or Enterprise level Portal products)

• As an organization, do we have the Skill set and expertise?

• Operating System preference for client. For instance, ‘Interwoven TeamSuite’ goes with Linux, Solaris or Windows only.

• Which Browser to be targeted. Open source testing tools like ‘Selenium’ are available in the Open source community but it primarily targets Firefox browser only.

• How do we test the PORTAL? What testing tools can we use? Can QTP (Quick Test Pro from Mercury) be a choice?

Product Evaluation – Continued….• Methodology – Waterfall / SDLC may not work. How about AGILE (SCRUM, XP –

Extreme programming) that emphasizes communication and collaboration, functioning software, and the flexibility to adapt to emerging business realities

• Authentication – Who will be using the Portal? Open source products like DRUPAL does not support Kerberos Authentication, but provides free Add-on for LDAP Authentication.

• SSL Login/Pages (Secured Socket Layer) – JOOMLA provides this feature, but DRUPAL does not.

• Database – DRUPAL supports MYSQL and Postgres, JOOMLA supports MYSQL only. Interwoven TeamSuite (Proprietary product) has a built-in database.

• Do they provide Enterprise level SEARCH functionality?

Installation

Must know!• 12-hive - Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\

• SSP – (Shared Service Provider ) Portals no longer contain any application services such as search, my site etc – all these services now have to come from an SSP. This is a collection of application servers that provide shared services out to any portals or sites that need them. These services include:

• Search• Index• Audience compilation• User profiles database• My Sites• Business Data Catalogue• Excel Services

There are no rules that govern where these services reside within the SSP or how many servers you have servicing them (with the exception of the Index server - only one per SSP).

Demo• Central Administration Site• Creation of Web application for MySite and SSP• Creation of Web Application• Creation of Sub-Sites like HR, IT • Creation of Site Collection• MySite• Alternate Access Mapping (AAM) – DNS entry (saksoftmoss and extranetmoss created for

CHN050)• SSL site (can use the IIS Resource kit) for creating a Certificate• Web Parts• Personalization – Document library • Outlook 2007 Integration – INBOX and Calendar• Using STSADM (Installation and Deploy the WindowsLink.wsp template)• InfoPath 2007 – Creating Forms and integrating into MOSS 2007• Work Flow – Create in VS2008 and integrate into MOSS• Community Templates and how to deploy them into MOSS

Next Session…

• CMS functionality of MOSS • SSO• SharePoint Designer 2007 – On how to design

templates, Work Flow, Master Pages etc• Deployment• Excel Services (Business Intelligence)

Thank You
