INTERJECTIONErik Sterner

History -The word interjection means “thrown in

between” from the Latin words inter (between) and iacere (thrown).

What is an Interjection? An interjection is a part of speech used to

express emotion through the speaker. The interjections are clear to the reader. Filled pauses such as uhh, umm, er, and eh are considered interjections. Interjections and generally used at the beginning of a sentence.

The emotions expressed by interjections are often strong (surprise, disgust, joy, excitement, enthusiasm, etc.). Some languages can have interjections that don’t express emotion.

Interjections Interjections are easily recognized with

certain punctuation. The common punctuation for interjections

are exclamations and commas.“Well! That’s great!”, “Well, don’t worry”, ‘Excuse me!” , “Sorry!”.

Interjections are also words. “Oh!”, “Wow!”, “Hey!”, “Hurray!”.

Non-existent Interjections Several interjections are sounds that

don’t exist in the English language and yet are interjections.

“Ahem,” (attention) “Tsk tsk,” (shame on you)

“Shh!” (quiet) “Psst!” (over here/listen) “Ugh” (nasty/disgusting) “Whew/Phew”

(what a relief!) “Yeah..” (yes).

Conclusion Interjections are used all the time in

various forms of writing, and you probably see them every day in reading. You can’t have conversation without interjection. They are boring.
