DROUGHT CRISIS IN CALIFORNIAJose Navarro

WHAT IS IT?

• A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, and a shortage of water resulting from this. • Affecting areas across the world•California's 4th year of a recordbreaking drought.

WATER USAGE

70% of our water is usedagriculture 22% in industrial use 8% in domestic

PLACES IMPACTED THE MOST BY THE DROUGHT

• The fertile Central Valley and Bakersfield are the two regions that are being most affected• Top ten cities that are suffering the most

are Hanford, Salinas, Gilroy-Morgan Hill, Santa

Maria, Merced, Santa Cruz, Madera, Visalia and Fresno.

WHAT OTHER PLACES ARE AFFECTED?• Other parts in the US other than California such

as parts of Oregon and Washington

• And areas across the globe: India, Africa, and Spain

How does the drought effect the Earth?

We need water to live, just like any other living thing on this planet. Lakes drying up atleast 2 feet a year

More water pumped from ground water. Groundwater levels are down by as much as 100 feet in some areas, because more is being pumped

Can El Niño erase a 4yr drought?

We are expecting a strong El Niño event this winter, but experts say it is unlikely to erase California’s four-year drought.

Precipitation would have to be 120% above average in order to make a small dent

We would need an abnormal increased amount of snowfall on the Sierra Nevadas to increase our water supply.

WATER CONSERVATION

• Easy Ideas to help save waterTake shorter showers, water your lawn only when it needs it.Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can save 8 gallons per dayUse mulch around trees and plants to help reduce evaporation and control

water-stealing weeds.
